On the first anniversary of 9/11 President Bush made a speech saying, `Freedom is the Almighty's gift to every man and woman in this world... as the greatest power on earth we have an obligation to help the spread of freedom.' Spreading freedom is the primary function of neoliberalization but as George Lakoff stated in `Whose Freedom?' freedom can be a very subjective term. The freedom of neoliberalism is the glory of unfettered, free market economics and the rights of corporations and financial institutions over individuals and governments. It's the freedom to fully exploit resources and workers. From its founding, America's wealthy have feared democracy recognizing that the majority, being poor and middle class, could vote to redistribute wealth and reduce the control held by the elites. After World War II, the middle class in the United States grew dramatically, somewhat flattening the countries power base. As a reaction to this dispersal of power the early 1970's saw the formation of groups like The Business Roundtable, an organization of CEO's who were `committed to an aggressive pursuit of political power for the corporation'. As the author writes, `neoliberalization was from the very beginning a project to achieve the restoration of class power'. The neoliberal plan was to dissolve all forms of social solidarity in favor of individualism, private property, personal responsibility and family values. It fell on well funded think tanks like The Heritage Foundation to sell neoliberalism to the general public using political-philosophical arguments. At the same time a group of economists were working on economic theories that developed into the `Washington Consensus'. These followers of Hayek and Friedman just happened to create economic blueprints for growth that matched up exactly with the goals of the wealthy business elites. The plans were based on the superiority of the marketplace in making wise decisions but also assumed perfect information and a level playing field for competition. As the author writes, `...eminent economic theorists [...] argue that all would be well with the world if only everyone behaved according to the precepts of their textbooks' The neoliberal economists have become so focused on growth that they seem to take a decidedly amoral approach to human suffering. Above all countries needed to focus on privatization and low taxes and definitely avoid deficit spending. What has happened is a widening of the gap between the wealthy and poor. The author suggests that rather than an unfortunate byproduct of neoliberalism or a temporary situation this is the intended result. The great irony is that the U.S., the world's number one proponent of neoliberalism, generally finds itself breaking the rules. With high deficit spending and massive subsidizing particularly in consumerism and defense spending the United States has generally taken a `do as I say, not as I do' stance. With the amount of political appointee/lobbyists shuttling back and forth between business and government Adam Smith's `Invisible Hand' looks more and more like a crushing fist. This was not the book I expected. This is a devastating critique of neoliberalism. I didn't agree with everything the author wrote and there are most definitely many positives that have come from globalization but the corporatization of the world has the potential to by an enormous threat. Global Warming has to be the poster child for neoliberal extremism with short term economic growth trumping the welfare of the entire world. David Harvey has a decidedly liberal stance but he backs up his views with sobering facts. Despite being a book on economics I found it extremely readable and recommend it wholeheartedly.

David Harvey, distinguished professor of Anthropology and Geography at City University New York, presents an incisive and highly readable critique of the doctrine of political economy known as Neoliberalism. Whether or not you agree with his arguments, the book is a high quality piece of scholarship that is immensely well researched. Harvey provides in depth citations to check his sources and evaluate the implications he presents of the supporting material. As the book deals with a subject fundamental to our material well being in analyzing the impact of political-economy, its importance cannot be overstated – at the least this work should provide a starting point for those uninitiated to join the debate and for those critical of social conditions and the reasons given for these conditions by elites, to further their theoretical understanding and potential for action. In considering the practical implications of the book, the hope is that a critical engagement and reading of the media and political policies as elements of neoliberal discourse should assist citizens to form broad oppositional movements geared to improving social conditions.Harvey presents not only an outline of neoliberalism as an economic theory, but as having a clearly identifiable moral argument. It is this moral argument and premise underpinning the validity of neoliberalism that needs to be disputed. The moral premise that individual effort and merit determines economic outcomes is highly attractive, but largely false as structural factors are more relevant to improving social mobility. This position is crucial in supporting neoliberal policy decisions as elites can point to the sanctity of an individual’s freedom in engaging deregulation and privatization. Under this ideology, free enterprise and entrepreneurialism form the cornerstone of democratic freedom.A result of this is to justify increased inequality as a natural conclusion to fair economic competition, which is in fact quite unfair as elites are free to insulate themselves from competition. This is made apparent through the persistent bailouts of institutions suffering losses due to financial speculation and the process of capital accumulation that continues with the socialization of losses, while profits are privatized. As Harvey argues convincingly, neoliberalism in practice diverges significantly from theory and betrays its own moral justification, while also failing to deliver economic security for citizens.Neoliberalism has become a singular program of capital accumulation for the elites with little concern to grow the economy, reduce social risk or improve conditions for the general population. Evidence supporting this view illustrates a pattern of fiscal risks, low growth and more troubling, authoritarian and military responses to social unrest, which can be examined both domestically in the U.S. (through incarceration) and abroad in terms of foreign policy influencing NGO’s such as the IMF and World Bank to support interventions favorable to American investment banks and corporations eager to increase foreign direct investment.Harvey also presents a global, comparative analysis of the state of neoliberal political economy that illustrates how the application of these policies has varied accordingly to unique domestic factors, such as the degree of embedded liberalism and the strength of labor. He includes North America, Europe and China, with a focus on Sweden and China as particularly interesting due to a modified implementation of neoliberal policy. In China this was owed to integrating market-based reform with the Communist command economy and in the case of Sweden, existing and strong support for labor-oriented policy dampened the ability for neoliberal reforms to achieve their aims.Evaluating neoliberalism requires considering whether as a system of political economy, it has achieved its aims. Arguably, economic policies of deregulation and privatization have lead to economic growth, yet comparatively, economies avoiding neoliberalism have produced better growth rates over the long term. So as an engine of growth, the theory fails to deliver. Moreover, the growth engendered by neoliberalism has been characterized by economic instability and financial volatility, which is likely due to a reduced role for government regulation and a lack of countercyclical demand side interventions.Where government intervention does occur, it often comes in the form of bailouts that socialize the losses of speculation and reckless corporate practices, while leaving the offending elites free to abscond with the profits. In practice, neoliberal theory and the regulatory capture defining its political control, supports arguably criminal financial practices and negligent economic management at the level of the firm and state.Trickle down supply side arguments have failed to improve economic conditions and social safety nets have been cut in order to protect the increasingly unstable fiscal position of countries pursuing neoliberal policies. Countries following a social market based approach have faired much better in terms of social indicators and this is the major take away from Harvey’s argument – if we wish to improve conditions, neoliberal policies must be resisted. This argument extends to both social conditions and economic, and fiscal stability. The socialization of private losses through bailouts and corporate subsidies present a defining element of the desperation of policy makers to preserve an illusion of normalcy while inequality and debt due to poor economic management increase. A more dangerous factor emerges through the neoconservative answer to social unrest due to poor economic management, which is to criminalize the conditions of poverty. The U.S. has risen to the forefront of the incarceration enterprise with a world leading number of inmates per capita (2013). Elites can be regarded as increasingly dangerous due to their failure to change course and double down on disastrous policies with authoritarian responses.Make no mistake, the situation is dire and Harvey concludes on a very cautiously optimistic tone by quoting President Roosevelt, who implicated excessive market freedoms in causing the Great Depression. Such a contention in the Bush or Obama era political environment would be seen as exceedingly socialist, and save for left egalitarians like Senator Bernie Sanders, this position is infrequently articulated or met with derision. Although it is gaining traction in popular support and the 2016 Democratic primary is telling both in terms of population level support for working class politics, but also the desperation of neoliberal establishment figures such as Hilary Clinton and her supporters to maintain the status quo and reject a labor oriented politics. This book overwhelmingly achieves its objectives in laying bare the dangerous turn neoliberal politics has taken due to its failures, as it lurches from one financial crisis to the next, its key actors seem more willing to court authoritarian policy responses to shore up the weakening legitimacy of their claim to provide the best, evidence based economic policy. Intellectual and financial elites including Paul Krugman and George Soros have changed their position on neoliberalism, moving from cheerleaders to sounding the alarm on the worsening social, economic and fiscal conditions resulting from the neoliberal experiment. In a time defined by divisive identity politics citizens seem disconnected from the most meaningful and uniting basis for a common politics of the working class. Harvey presents a call to action to improve economic conditions for all citizens that is compellingly well researched. I suggest you read this book and see where you stand; you may find yourself convinced of the need for a broad based oppositional movement to oppose the elite’s profligacy and economic mismanagement that is neoliberalism.

On one hand this only adds fuel to my already well-it bonfire of paranoia but it's a very well-written book. Had to read it for a class and was not too keen but once I started, I could not stop. I plan on reading the whole book beyond the assigned page range. Articulate and concise, without the usual, largely incomprehensible academic jargon, very clearly lays out what's been going on. Scary.

Unbelievable: 7 Myths About the History and Future of Science and Religion, by Michael Newton Keas

Review

“Unbelievable should be on the shelf of every science popularizer and college astronomy professor. Perhaps then we can begin to purge our culture of the ‘science is the enemy of religion’ myths Michael Keas slays in his refreshingly contrarian book.” —Guillermo Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of Astronomy, Ball State University; coauthor of The Privileged Planet “Not content to knock down the myths about the alleged conflict between science and religion, Mike Keas shows where they came from and how science popularizers like Carl Sagan have used them to further their own agendas. Using a wide range of sources, including textbooks and television shows, Keas explains how these myths got into the bloodstream of our culture. An invaluable resource.” —James Hannam, author of God’s Philosophers and The Genesis of Science“Michael Keas decisively debunks an array of myths that have long impeded our understanding of the histories of science and of religion. Unbelievable may earn Keas plenty of enemies, but nobody concerned with real evidence can dismiss his argument out of hand. This is a brilliant, engaging, and important contribution to a debate about truly universal matters.” —Dennis Danielson, Professor Emeritus, University of British Columbia; editor of The Book of the Cosmos“Michael Keas does a splendid job dispelling viral myths and common errors about the relationship between science and Christianity. This book is well documented and written in a pleasing style accessible to the general reader as well as scholars.” —Jeffrey Burton Russell, Professor of History Emeritus, University of California, Santa Barbara; author of Inventing the Flat Earth“The notion of inevitable, perpetual conflict between science and religion is one of the most prevalent grand narratives in the modern West. It takes many specific forms, and Michael Keas deftly disposes of myths like these with lively, thoroughly researched stories that will leave readers much better informed.” —Edward B. Davis, coeditor of The Works of Robert Boyle “The supposed warfare between science and Christianity has long been a staple of science textbooks and popular science. Michael Keas skewers the most popular myths used to illustrate that warfare, displaying his deep knowledge of the history of science. If you want to understand the true, and positive, relationship between science and Christianity, you should read Unbelievable.” —Jay W. Richards, bestselling author of Infiltrated and Indivisible

The focus of this book is to document the fact, widely accepted among science historians today, that the claim religion, specifically Christianity, has been historically the enemy of science is false. Rather, in fact, science, actually scientism, has been opposed to Christianity for decades. Keas has selected the seven most common claims anti-Christian scientists and others use to denigrate Christianity, using history, science and logic to show they are false. He traces the myths back to the founders of the myths, then shows they were based more on wishful thinking wrong information, or distortion of history than fact. One false myth Keas covers is the idea that it was believed for eons that the universe was so very small that the heavenly bodies were at no great a “distance from the earth,” a belief shown the be wrong by the progress of science (p. 19). Thus science again has proved Christianity wrong, and this wrong belief even opposed science because it discouraged researching the vast distance of our universe. In fact, as Keas documented, many Christian thinkers recognized the enormity of the universe way back in Christian history and Copernicus made our big universe even bigger. The reason this is a concern is the anti-Christians believed that a big universe made humans smaller to the point of making us almost insignificant. Conversely, an enormous God, Christian scientists believed, made God even more important. I know Keas has been working on this book for several years and the research he put into the book shows. I have researched and written about most of the myths he covered, and for his reason can appreciate the enormous amount of research Keas completed in writing the book. In several chapters Keas dug deeper than my research, supporting my basic conclusions. This book will serve to help bury these old myths.

If you like history, science, tech, philosophy, theology, or culture, READ IT! People NEED to read this to avoid the dominant cultural myth that is moving millions toward falsehood and error. The past is the key to the present. Okay, I know that I'm using that out of context, but really, isn't an understanding of the past NECESSARY to forming accurate assessments for navigating the future? If major TV programs endorse MAJOR FACTUAL ERRORS significantly deluding the public, who's going to set them right? We need more of Key's astute, factual, and well-reasoned thinking. Not only is well-grounded history presented, but the origins and spread of the myths are precisely traced. Keas' reading well over a hundred historic textbooks on the subject is evident in his clarity and conclusions. But the book is not sloughed down in details. The author does not claim an omniscient perspective like some textbooks, but clearly states his research and its limits. Unlike the myth-makers he critiques, the author shares many of his findings openly regardless of whether they support his view or not. (I don't think Kepler, cited in the book, would want it any other way.) It should be noted that the author's conclusion and content does come up against those purporting the War hypothesis and so-called Copernican principle. But his conclusion moves on from there in a way that really shook me in its relevance. In the same way that overly excitable YouTubers might be screaming that god is about to be created in AI or else descend in the form of ET--so this book is a much needed dose of reality for the seeming majority of TV broadcasters and the American public. From medieval times and the Renaissance to contemporary times and projections about the future, Keas takes his readers further in and further up while reining in the extravagant and hurtful claims of the myth-makers past and present.

My rating may seem a bit harsh coming as it does from a Christian point of view. Bear with me. I believe the history of science is very important. This history clearly shows two distinct things about the whole concept of knowledge and truth. True science has always had a potential to advance human knowledge, but it also has the great potential to mislead the unsuspecting, both the scientist and the layman. This book attempts to show that science and religion (Christianity in particular) have not always been at war and in fact do not need to be at war. The implication is that modern science and Christianity might come to the meeting of minds in the future. It is true that the founding fathers of modern science were almost all creationists, and many were devout Christians. It is also true that since the Copernican revolution, the “knowledge” said to have been gained, has gradually undermined and sot to exclude the place of Biblical revelation as having any relation to knowledge and truth. In his book, the author sets out some valuable and interesting historical corrections to the popular views of events relating to science and religion, however, he ends up supporting the initial Copernican system with Bruno’s addition of habitable worlds beyond the earth. Thus, giving a nod of approval to those who are attempting to extinguish all reference to the Bible as a source of knowledge and truth about the universe and Man’s place in it.Consider the following. The Bible says that the heavens and the earth were created by God, modern science says there was no creator and designer God. The bible says that the earth was formed before the sun, moon and stars, science says that the earth was formed after the sun and stars. The Bible says the plants and animals were created after their distinct kinds, science says plants and animals all came from yet lower live forms by way of genetic mutation and natural selection. The Bible indicates that the earth and the universe are relatively young, science says they are very old. The bible indicates that the earth is the center of the created universe, science, presently says there is no center. One could go on and on. The point is that modern science presents a very strong, one might add, rebellious, contradiction of Biblical revelation. As to history and science, the author barely touches on the fact that Tycho Brahe, who was one of the greatest observational astronomers of his time, did not accept Copernican system and developed what might be called the Tychonian system with the earth remaining at the center of all motion. A modified Tychonian systems remains viable to this day and seems to align more accurately with all the experiments with light from Argo, Airy, Michelson and Morley, Michelson and Gale, the Sagnac effect. Who knows where science might be today if it had not turned aside to the Copernican system? But we, most likely, will never know.In conclusion, the author starts with some interesting historical observations about the history of science, revealing a number of historical myths, but ends by setting out a false hope that science and religion (Christianity) will find common ground. In the face of this authors fantasy is the fact that the Bible predicts a falling away from the faith once delivered to the saints and a final rebellion against God and His Son, Jesus Christ. The final apostasy is well underway and is being supported by materialism, atheism and “science” falsely so called.

Her series of book’s “The Solo Girl’s Travel Guides” takes you on a journey through Southeast Asia on an adventure of a lifetime. Alexa West has lived in these countries so her first hand knowledge on what to do and how to do it is invaluable. She takes you off the beaten paths and shows you a side of Vietnam like no other author. Her writing style is engaging and you will find yourself with her book in one hand and your computer in the other looking things up simultaneously. Her travel guides are so empowering like you are there with her and she is guiding you along the way giving you confidence that you can do it as a solo woman traveler . After reading her series of books The Solo Girl’s Travel Guides for Bangkok, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam I’m so empowered to take this journey solo. I can’t wait to go to the places she recommends and how to get there and where to stay. There are many options for every budget or comport level. She gives step by step instructions on exactly how to take a trip like this to Vietnam and Southeast Asia. I highly recommend all her books. Thank you for giving all of us solo girl’s the knowledge, support and encouragement to travel solo !!

And that’s all she wrote. This is the least informative guide book I have ever bought. It consists of skimpy chapters from which you learn little more than that the author was there. There is no publisher to be found on this book so I will assume that it is self published. I wish Amazon would flag these type of books for the consumer. I ended up purchasing Fodor’s Essential Vietnam and am now actually able to plan my trip in February with confidence. Don’t waste your money.

This Vietnam travel guide is wonderful - well written and researched, clearly and practically guiding you through an overview of the country and possible journeys and adventures that await. It has detailed information on every city, including those not on the beaten path, and of course, pertinent information specificially for women travelers around our safety and health. Hightly recommended!

I wanna take a trip to Vietnam so I bought this book. I’ve read a little of it. Seems like it has some updated good advice.

Great book, excellent service.

This has helped me plan my 14 day trip to Vietnam!

From the Back Cover

Every year, Major League Baseball spends more than $1.5 billion on pitchers five times the salary of all NFL quarterbacks combined. Pitchers are the lifeblood of the sport, the ones who win championships, but today they face an epidemic unlike any baseball has ever seen. One tiny ligament in the elbow keeps snapping and sending teenagers and major leaguers alike to undergo surgery, an issue the baseball establishment ignored for decades. For three years, Jeff Passan, the lead baseball columnist for Yahoo Sports, has traveled the world to better understand the mechanics of the arm and its place in the sport s past, present, and future. He got the inside story of how the Chicago Cubs decided to spend $155 million on one pitcher. He sat down for a rare interview with Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax, whose career ended at 30 because of an arm injury. He went to Japan to understand how another baseball-obsessed nation deals with this crisis. And he followed two major league pitchers as they returned from Tommy John surgery, the revolutionary procedure named for the former All-Star who first underwent it more than 40 years ago.Passan discovered a culture that struggles to prevent arm injuries and lacks the support for the changes necessary to do so. He explains that without a drastic shift in how baseball thinks about its talent, another generation of pitchers will fall prey to the same problem that vexes the current one.Equal parts medical thriller and cautionary tale, The Arm is a searing exploration of baseball s most valuable commodity and the redemption that can be found in one fragile and mysterious limb. This is the most important baseball book in years, not just for major league pitchers like me who had Tommy John surgery but for every parent who wants a child with a healthy arm. Those who follow the game of baseball have notices that lately the workloads of pitchers have decreased, but the number and severity of injuries suffered by pitchers has increased. Through it all, the amount of money spent on pitchers has increased to more than a billion dollars. This excellent book by Jeff Passan explores the business of pitching through several different lenses. doesn't just seem so, but research by Bill James and others backs that up.Starting with the question of why there are so many pitching injuries, Passan looks into some reasons. From his research and interviews, the primary reason seems to be velocity. Pitchers these days throw harder than ever before, and velocity does correlate with injury rates. Passan doesn’t just stop with this conclusion – he backs it up with stories about young players getting raves for hitting speeds over 95 miles an hour on the radar gun. This “need for speed” is illustrated by his writing about youth baseball tourneys, traveling teams, and the Japanese baseball culture of big workloads for pitchers, no matter the age.The popular surgical procedure of repairing the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), also known as “Tommy John surgery”, is explained in detail. The book starts off like a medical record as it describes this operation on Todd Coffey. This is the second time Coffey, a major league relief pitcher, has undergone the surgery. His rehab and struggles to get back into the major leagues is the main thrust of the book, along with a similar following of another pitcher trying to make it back after the surgery, Daniel Hudson. Their stories, not just in rehab or on the field but also the toll it takes on their families, makes for fascinating reading. .Despite all of these setbacks and questions, major league teams still spend a lot of money on top free agent pitchers. The wooing of free agent pitcher Jon Lester in the off-season of 2014-15 is chronicled, mainly from Lester’s point of view. The maneuverings of the teams in order to convince Lester to sign a contract with the team is also completing reading and one will shake his or her head to realize the lengths go to acquire top pitching talent. The book is highly recommended for all baseball fans as it will address many different issues affecting the most important position in the game and how it turned into a billion-dollar industry. Between the outstanding writing and the thorough research, this is one to add to every baseball bookshelf.

Always interesting to get behind the scenes in the rehab process. Passan takes us into the rehabs of both a near-star like Daniel Hudson but also into the process of journeyman player (Todd Coffey). All tendons are equal (and liable to failure) under the lord, regardless of star power. The weakness of the book is in how much it jumps around from interest group to interest group. Passan looks at Japan, at youth travel ball, at elite training centers, at individual players, and at MLB. It's interesting to get looks at these various centers of the game, but it prevents Passan from fully developing any single viewpoint. Does Japan -- for all its crazy emphasis on working pitchers arms -- have a better or worse arm injury rate than the United States? Passan never makes the determination. Are Perfect Game pitcher/participants any medically worse off than non-participants? Passan never makes the determination. So, the book is an interesting survey of the problem, but it doesn't make the effort to draw much in the way of useful conclusions.

Very detailed and informative book. I do not give it 5 stars for two reasons. One, the book is a collection of multiple narratives that alternate chapter by chapter. This at times creates confusion and loss of continuity when a narrative ends at the end of a chapter and, after several intervening chapters covering other narratives, the narrative continues in a new chapter, but you don't always remember where it left off several chapters earlier. Two, the author does not arrive at a conclusion as to the possible cause, or causes, of the epidemic of UCL injuries in baseball. He does cite what I consider to be the most important statistic in this field. And that statistic is this: Up until the late 1990s, of all Tommy John surgeries performed in America, precisely 0% were performed on teenagers. Today, of all Tommy John surgeries performed in America, 57% are performed on teenagers. From 0% to 57% in only 20 years. That is an alarming increase. What has changed in youth baseball in the past 20 years that can account for this astronomical increase in Tommy John surgeries among teenagers? The answer to me is obvious: the advent of year-round baseball fueled by travel tournaments and showcases.

Let's start with the positives, this book is well-reported, factual, objective and quite well-written. Passan is a fine story-teller who manages to inject his personality into the narrative but without making himself part of the story. And he tackled a question that is troubling baseball at every level, the increasing number of pitchers' arm injuries, so it was worth attempting. But I thought this book had two issues: First, it spent a great many pages outlining the depth of the issue, and its impact, in great detail, then answered it with a shrug, saying no one knows why it's happening or how to fix it. I was expecting some sort of insight and felt extremely let down. Second, given this lack of resolution, it seemed to me Passan took what could have been an excellent long-form-journalism piece - perfect for The Atlantic or The New Yorker, for example - and forced it to become a book.
