I was so looking forward to this book. But at 12% on the Kindle where Mr. Knowlton “mansplained” some information to Lizzie, I’m done. This pejorative word really caught in my chest and tells me this book probably isn’t for me (male). I am so disappointed.

Before you buy this book, ask yourself what you are really interested in. Are you interested in the tale of Lizzie Borden? Are you interested in the legend? Lizzie, herself? Are you interested in the life and theories of inconsequential newsmen and women? Maybe a scholar or two who has something to say about new ways of discovering data...but has nothing really to do with Lizzie Borden. So many of us see "Lizzie Borden" in a title and immediately click on it, wrongfully assuming that it will be another excellent read. And that's where you will be woefully disappointed. I'm not blaming anyone for me buying this kindle read. But it was not what I thought it would be. I'm not interested in far fetched ideas that are thrown in for no other reason than to throw them in. What does it have to do with the case of Lizzie Borden. Nothing. I don't need to know about the lawyers and their upbringing and law school. These are people who would be nothing in history, if not for Lizzie Borden. I want to hear about HER. Just a really awful book.

Most people are familiar with the murder that Lizzie Borden was accused of as there have been numerous books and movies based on it. In August of 1892, Lizzie’s father and stepmother were brutally murdered in their home. Lizzie was accused of the murder and the trial became a sensationalized spectacle. People then and now all have different opinions of what happened that day in Fall River, Massachusetts. Was Lizzie a guilty murderess or was she wrongly accused?I have read many accounts of this murder and even saw a play based on it. Ms. Robertson’s book is one of the most extensively researched and unbiased accounts I’ve read. This most definitely does not read like a historical novel as well it shouldn’t, though never ceased to hold my interest. This is a fact-based accounting based on Ms. Robertson’s twenty years of research. The book itself ended at 65%, the rest being a list of notes detailing the source of almost every sentence in the book. What I found the most impressive about the book was that the author includes much information about society at the time of the murder and the way people perceived women. The men on Lizzie’s jury just couldn’t imagine a lady such as Lizzie committing such an atrocious act. For a women to do what was done to these two victims, she would have had to have been a monster and that would have shown in her countenance. The book also touches on what was thought to be the cause of “hysteria” in women. The book not only covers the trial in detail but also the discussions that were taking place outside of the courtroom and newspaper accountings, as well as rumors. Another plus is that the book is chock full of photos that help the details to life.A must read for true life crime readers. Highly recommended.

Cara Robertson has written a fine book that wonderfully weaves the context of the Trial proceedings into a “you are there” narrative flush with new insights and deft storytelling, exposing the female-suppressed culture of the Gilded Age. Drawing heavily from the Trial transcript and newspapers of the day, she tells this oft-told tale in a new way that forces the reader to reflect on the cultural influences of the era and the why and how of its sensationalism, final outcome, and enduring appeal.Well read Lizzie Borden scholars will hear in the narrative echos of previously published books on the case which have been “go to” resources for decades, but probably my favorite sentence in the whole book is this: “Combining the enduring emotional force of myth and more prosaic intellectual challenge of a detective story, it is a ‘locked door’ mystery written by Sophocles.” (Kudos, Cara)The book credits almost all the photographs therein to the Fall River Historical Society where, sadly, the wrong image of a purported Uncle John Vinnicum Morse is actually that of his (and sister Sarah’s) brother, William Bradford Morse. I know this to be a fact because William’s photograph is included in one of several family albums to be found at the Swansea Historical Society, housed at the Swansea Public Library – a place where I have visited for research several times. William’s name is handwritten in pencil above his image. The image on the left is the actual John V. Morse and has appeared in countless books and documentaries. William, who was in Excelsior, Minnesota during the murders (as he had been most of his life) did, however, resemble his brother, John. (It should be noted that when I brought this error to the attention of the FRHS, I was informed they had documentation from a relative of the Morse family asserting the photograph of William was John. This fails to explain the decades of the other photograph being cited as John with credit to the FRHS).A more blatant error appears on page 278 where the author writes of post Trial notoriety and states “Papers printed improbable reports of engagements, including a betrothal to one of her former jurors.” There is no source citation in the end notes to this statement, however, it has been widely reported of the December 10, 1896 Fall River Herald News report citing a “Swansea school teacher” as the subject of this rumor. That person was, in fact, Orrin Gardner.Ms. Robertson’s deft handling of Knowlton’s lengthy summation strips his elegant oratory to the persuasive essentials: the prosecution’s case was based on Lizzie’s exclusive opportunity and that the victims did not die at the same time -and that these were the controlling facts of the case.As to why Lizzie remained in Fall River the entire second half of her life, the author speculates with an allegorical reference to Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter: “It may seem marvelous, that, with the world before her….this woman should still call that place her home, where and where only, she must needs be the type of shame. But there is a fatality, a feeling so irresistible and inevitable that it had the force of doom, which almost invariably compels human beings to linger around and haunt ghost-like, the spot where some great and marked recent event has given color to their lifetime, and still the more irresistibly, the darker the tinge that saddens it.” (And here one can pause to ponder Donald Woods’ appropriate marketing of Maplecroft). While I was impressed with Cara Robertson’s fresh narrative point of view, my overall expectations of the book fell short considering the author’s background. There were far too many errors. There was no new information, and indeed it seemed peppered with the redundancy of other known works. I had been anticipating more given her years of research on the case and her impeccable credentials. That said, I still highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this case and specifically to those interested in the Gilded Age and its cultural impact on women.-Faye MusselmanCypress, CA

Review

“It's silly, it's funny, it's irreverent.”—Comic Book Resources "Every bit as chaotic and unabashedly fun as one would expect.”—IGN   “Harley Quinn is a pure joy as a self-referential comedic anti-villain, and an antidote to the far too serious superhero operas that it shares its universe with.”—Newsarama

Unlike the rest of D.C.'s rebirth series this black value harley does not go back to square one, so if your not a fan of the 52's this is not for you, it picks up right after the52's Harley's volume 6. But in my opinion that is a great thing you still get to keep all of her sideshow and gang of Harley friends who run into trouble of a walker sort, and you get a feel for how the books will go.without giving to many spoilers you get Harley, joker, poison ivy, gang of Harley's,the side show crew, aliens, red tool and the penguin.

Palmiotti & Connor continue their fun series with Harley Quinn. If you have liked and enjoyed their take on the character, you're going to love this continuation in DC Rebirth. Fun story, funny dialogue, and good art. Recommend it for HQ fans and those who are looking for a funny, pure entertainer of a DC book.

This is a collection of three different stories of the new great Harley Quinn. She fights zombies, evil telemarketers, and criminal punk rockers.

love the wit the grace of the charactor

I started reading this comic book some time ago, and I like it very much!

Ahhhhh yeah

The comics by Amanda Connor is awesome. I thoroughly enjoy them as they are brilliantly illustrated and extremely well written.I have nothing to comment besides how great threefold are.

These cards need revision and improvement. Information contained in the "please" card was illustrated properly but the verbal written description did not match the card!!! This is MAJOR in my book of importance! Additionally most of the cards were illustrated examples and some were an actual picture of a child making the sign, my personal preference is maintaining consistency amongst the cards instead of looking like the deck contains mixed editions. Returning

This is such an amazing book!! I researched multiple different books - I was looking for something that had good descriptions as well as good pictures so we could all understand how to do the sign correctly. I was very pleased to find it has the perfect amount of pictures and descriptions. I also found the tips to to teach signs to be very helpful and I didn't even think of them! Overall, great book!

I love this deck of cards. Very sturdy fun box to keep them on too. It is a very basic collection of sign language perfect for the parent that wants to dabble with it ( teaching only common words used in a baby's vocabulary) but if you want to continue beyond " mother" " father" "eat" etc you'll need something more detailed eventually.

Great book for learning basic signs with your baby. Came in very handy with my late speaker.

This book is amazing! I am Japanese and my husband is American, our daughter will be a bilingual. I don't speak English well but this book seems easy and I understand well. Cant wait to learn signs and communicate with my daughter

Like the book, but the illustrations for the signs and the descriptions aren’t the greatest. I found the website that corresponds with the book was more helpful because you can actually see a video of the person signing (which was different than the book illustrated and described).

Love this book. Taught all my kids a few signs beginning at 3 months old. Really does help to bridge the communication gap!

I haven't spent much time reading this book but got a copy for myself first, and was impressed so got a copy for my daughter as well. She has a one-year-old and has been wanting to teach/learn sign language.(I got used books). I would definitely recommend this book. It not only shows the signs but also give suggestions about how to teach baby.

I wanted to like the story but it was just to over the top. Some parts were just unrealistic. I wanted more from the main characters and Adam story could have just been deleted. Nicki was just playing with him. If you are bored and want something to read then yes it. Other than that skip it. My first book by this author and I am up in the air about reading another by her.

....whatever will be will be. The futures' not ours to see. Que sera sera" That described Nicolette Angel Collins and Robert Aaron Chandler's life. OMG...this story had me all in my feelings crying. I felt Robert and Nickie's pain. She sacrificed the love of her life so he could achieve his dream of replacing his father as Senator of Georgia when he retired or was this truly his dream? He'd been groomed at an early age that his place was in politics because of his family's legacy. Senator Charles Chandler had his son's life planned to a T. Nickie was the love of his life and he would give it all up for her, to keep her. He fell in love with her the minute she began school at Roswell High in eleventh grade. He would do anything for her, including kill anyone who tried to hurt her. She would sacrifice her life so he could achieve his dream. They thought they could keep their relationship on the D.L. in public, but in private, WOW, the explosion between the two was an inferno. Nickie knew that he could not get elected in a Republican state with a black girlfriend on his arm. When his poll numbers started to slip during his campaign, she made the heartbreaking decision, as pushed by Robert's father to break up with Robert completely. In doing so she broke his heart and hers as well. She tried to move on and tried to force him to move on as well. When she met Adam Johnston in Miami, she loved the freedom they had with each other, the freedom they had to walk in public holding hands and show PDA without any repercussions. But she still could not give Adam her heart completely and he wanted more. It was not until Nickie almost died for a second time that he could see why. Nickie and Robert had a bond that he could not break. He realized that she sacrificed their love and life together so Robert could become a senator. He only wished that he could find a woman who loved him enough to sacrifice her all for him. Even though he was devastated to lose Nickie, he knew she was in good hands.Posey put her foot in this story. The was a bumpy rollercoaster ride that had me sweating. I cried during all of the hospital scenes. I felt Nickie and Robert's angst in losing Tiffany. I felt both Robert and Adams' love for Nickie when they did not know if she would survive. I really loved how Posey incorporated Sam and Jacob into the story as back-stories to fill in from her previous books. I think it enhanced the relationship explaining not only Sam and Nickie's relationship but also Sam and Jacob's. I was cheering with Nickie when she finally decided to grab the bull by the horns and take her HEA with Robert, regardless of what anyone thought, including his parents. That's another subject, Robert's parents got on my nerves royally, but Robert was determined to keep Nickie despite hat they wanted him or Nickie to do. He was ready to cut them out of his life and live life on his own terms with the love of his life, his Angel. They'd waited too long for their time.I only have two problems with this book. One, I wish all authors would do is when they name songs titles along with the authors that they would create a Spotify playlist and have the link to that list placed in the front of the book. I think this would enhance the readers' enjoyability. Two, this book needs to be re-edited and place quotation marks where they should be. The missing marks make it somewhat difficult to determine whether the character was thinking or actually saying something. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

I must say it's a book that one can't put down and it's one that had me crying looking a hot ass mess, and my husband making fun of me. I have to give it to Robert and Nikki on how strong there love is. How Nikki gave up her love and happiness for his political career, and to satisfy his parents. My soul hurt so much when they lost there baby because she was worried about him and keeping him on track. Also the pressure his father was putting on her to do the right thing according to him. When Adam came into the picture he was the distraction she needed but she knew her heart still belonged with Robert but she was trying to see where a new relationship can lead her. It's funny how one can watch her best friend Samantha going through a lot for the love of her life just like she was fighting. I'm just glad everything worked out in the end. I can't wait to read Adam's story. He really needed to find a new love to give his heart too. Pick this book up everyone it's a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read

I enjoyed this book from the first page until the last page. I felt Nicki and Robert's pain and happiness. I would love to read about them again. It was also great reading about a young Samantha. Great job Posey!

This is a Great book allowing us to know the back story and understand characters that we have previously met in other books. Thank you Posey for this story of love, sacrifice and determination. A well earned HEA

Enjoyed this book for beginning to end. Love Robert & Nikki young love to adult hood. Could have skip Adam chapters!! All in all a good read.

I like this book very much, not my first read from miss Parker and it will not be my last. Nicki and Robert when through a lot.

Ok ,spoiler alert !! I loved how Robert loved Nicki so completely from the very beginning to the bittersweet end .It broke my heart to read the post of there daughter tiffany and the devastating effects it took on them both.I just couldn't understand nicki's reason for pushing Robert away .Robert showed her in everyway that he could that his love for her was more important than his political career ever would ,I mean he killed a man for her. I get it now that I finished the book but I was so pissed at how she just gave herself totally to Adam .I thought that in some ways she fell to hard to quick for him and gave her heart to him when she had known Robert since high school and wasn't as freeing to love him so completely.I have to be honest I stopped reading the book when she took up with Adam and was doing all the things with him that her and Robert didn't do and thing the did,I was mad as hell !Once again Posey your brilliance showed through in the end .I now realized after finishing the book that Nicki and Robert had to go full circle to get to their happily ever after. I truly hope that there will be a book 2 .I would very highly recommended this book as well as any other book you have written you truly are one of my favorite authors and I can't wait to see how emotional you will have me with your next book
