Once again Maniscalco slays with a fabulously haunting read. Set against a backdrop of superstition and myth, Hunting Prince Dracula makes even vampires seem real as Dracula rises from the grave to terrorize the people of Romania. I don't think I can say anything bad about this book. Last year, I gave Stalking Jack the Ripper a go despite it falling outside my usual genres of choice, and I'm glad I did. Not only was it a fabulous debut, but this author has shown her talent with an even better sequel. I loved the combination of the mysterious legends surrounding Dracula and the science of studying cadavers that merge to give this book such a spooky vibe. This is, in part, due to the setting, a remote castle in Romania well away from the bustling streets of London we walked in the last book. What's creepier than Castle Bran in winter? The world set the mood but the characters brought this story to life. Audrey Rose is just fabulous. She's fighting against the norm by being a woman in the sciences (YES GO GIRL) without sacrificing who she is. I like that she's comfortable in both a dress and pants, that she is afraid of spiders but can cut open a body without a second thought, that she has strong emotions but also doesn't let them rule her every decision. In short, she's highly intelligent and absolutely delightful. As is her Mr. Cresswell. And let me just say, Maniscalo knows how to build a slow burning romance, almost slow enough that I wanted to tear the pages out until something happened.Almost. Don't worry, no books were harmed in the reading of this story. We met Cresswell last time around and he's just as swoon-worthy in Hunting Prince Dracula, if not more so. Yet we also get insight into his personal life, meeting a member of his family and watching as his walls fold back to reveal the man beneath. This is Audrey Rose's story but Cresswell is just as big a part of that and I loved every bit of him. I'm not all that familiar with mystery novels, mind you, but I felt this book was very well paced. Just as my mind caught up and made certain connections, something new would be introduced, constantly keeping me on edge. There was always a level of mystery present up until the ending, which was both satisfying but also created a desperate need in me for book 3. Hunting Prince Dracula is a beautifully crafted, spooky mystery perfect for anyone seeking a thrill amidst legends. And if you haven't read Stalking Jack the Ripper, now is the perfect time to get both of these books on your TBR! Another outstanding novel from Kerri Maniscalco!

I heard so much hype about Stalking Jack The Ripper, and was excited to read it. But I ended up having mixed feelings about the story. Well, I am thrilled to report that Hunting Prince Dracula was a complete winner for me. I think one of the main differences between the two, and reasons this book worked much better for me, is that it didn't follow a well known case. Instead, Hunting Prince Dracula is a unique story created from the legends and history of Vlad the Impaler, aka the original Dracula. And boy is this story creepy - and bloody. The setting of Bran Castle in Romania (the inspiration for Dracula) was the perfect backdrop to this new case, adding a frightening layer of history to this tale. I had no idea who the murderer was until they were revealed, and was on the edge of my seat in anticipation following Audrey Rose through the castle as she sought to figure it out before anything more terrible could happen (*shudders*). Not only is Audrey Rose racing against a murderer, she's fighting deep prejudice against the role of women at this time, even more so because of her passion for examining dead bodies. I appreciated her strong will and determination to go after what she wants, no matter what others think. The romance between Audrey Rose and Thomas also heats up, and I enjoyed watching them work out their feelings as they worked together through the book. I love when I can understand the connection between two people and I completely see it between these two. They really are each other's match. Nothing like a active murderer and an increasingly disturbing case to bring two people together! We also begin to learn more about Thomas in this story, and even meet his sister, whom I liked a great deal.Once again, this case wraps itself up well while the ending also teases where the characters will go in the future. I'm so glad I stuck with this series!

Hunting Prince Dracula was everything I'd hoped for and more. It was absolutely a five star read! Here are the top five reasons you should put this on your TBR (or even better yet, read the first one and then this one!)1) Audrey Rose because he pursues her dream with an unrelenting persistence. Also, I loved that she struggled with coming to terms of the events of the last book in this one. The character development in general in this book were excellent but hers was superb.2) The beautifully dark and creepy atmosphere. The local superstitions are interwoven perfectly with the science.3) The mystery is amazing and very well done.4) The female friendships!5) Mr. Thomas Cresswell (aka my new favorite book boyfriend).6) I lied, I can't pick five. There's another fabulous romance that I ship almost as much as Wadsworth and Cresswell!Hunting Prince Dracula has an absolutely perfect mix of horror, suspense, friendship, and romance. There was one scene that could be nightmare inducing for some but was absolutely brilliant in the story. As much as I loved Stalking Jack the Ripper, I enjoyed this one even more. I've actually already reread it and loved it just as much the second time. I'm counting down the days until book three is released and keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be seeing more of these characters for many years to come.*Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Okay, read all the other reviews, because they are awesome. One thing I will add to them:The author has a section about who should and should not move to Mexico. It's very realistic. I mean, we're talking heat, bugs, water that can make you wish you were dead, things that will drive the impatient up a bloody wall. Mexico isn't America! Don (I felt like we were on a first-name basis) keeps saying "If...you should NOT move to Mexico!"The picture indelibly etched in my mind came from (paraphrasing now) Don's admonishment: If you can't handle animals in the street, both dead and alive, don't move to Mexico! When I finished this book, I wanted to move to Mexico SO BAD!!! I started sort of dreaming in Spanish, what's in there still from when I studied it thirty years ago in college. That's never happened to me before....Lots of flavor in this book. Lots of realism. Lots of very good information, things you're going to need to know that I never would have thought of. Lots of sensitivity and love for the Mexican people, too.I imagine Don as kind of the Crocodile Dundee of Mexico. I hope DH and I get to meet him in person one day....

I'll admit that when I started reading this book I didn't think I was going to like it. After a while though I really got into it and couldn't wait to get a chance to read it. It's funny and packed full of information on all things Mexican an expat should be concerned with. All of this information is woven in deeply into the chapters, paragraphs, and words that you'll end up dog-earing and highlighting all over the place. I wish some of this information was in a supplemental appendix and in a different format so that it would be easier to find. With the way the book is written you'll have to read it thoroughly and make notes and mark pages to be able to later find the information you're looking for.Overall this is a great book and I highly recommend it.

this book offers so much insight into life in Mexico from the perspective of an American transplant. Just a TON of tips and additional resources! Many personal stories from people who have successfully made the transition into a different culture. Plus very practical information on what to expect and insights into why anyone would want to move to Mexico (or not.) If you are seriously considering a move, this book will help you tremendously. Very easy to read - well written with a lot of humor.

If you only read this book for the author's style it would be worth it. If you are looking for real and valuable information about living in Mexico you have found the place. I read this book while in Ajijic, MX taking a Focus on Mexico seminar about living there. The book was a great companion to the program and we are returning soon to look for a place to live. I hope I get to meet the author when living Lakeside as I can only imagine who interesting he must be in person. Perhaps I will look for him in next year's Posada. Thanks for an informative book that is wildly funny.

Hola, I loved this book and have learned so much about living in Mexico that I feel like I have already been living there for a year!! Don Adams' writing is like you are right there talking with him and he doesn't mince words about anything and everything. An honest in your face book that covers every single thing you could ever want to know and a whole a lot more that you didn't know you needed to know. Some things will shock you and I am so glad I know about them. Written in a style that is so easy to read and keeps you laughing, too. Fabulous - you don't want to put it down. You will love this book and will want to keep it forever. This is the best book on living in Mexico that I have ever read - you don't need to buy any more books about this subject - just this one! And I will be moving either to Ajijic in the Lake Chapala area or San Miguel de Allende very soon. Tough choice as both towns in the mountains are marvellous! Thanks Don Adams! Adios

While there may be a few facts of interest or use in this book, for the most part anyone who has travelled in Mexico or done any research on moving there will probably already know most of the contents of this book. What bothered me most about it was the fact that the author is sexist, always addressing the reader as if he were male and not possibly a female ('you and the missus', 'sweet cheeks' referring to one's female mate, etc...). Also, much of the information is out-of-date (e.g. the author states that paying $600/month rent is far too much). If you buy this book, be prepared to wade through most of it in search of information relevant to you.

Totally outdated

Funny review of the pitfalls that can befall you when moving to another country. Thought provoking and entertaining.I plan on moving to Mexico soon and I hope avoid most of the pitfalls he has pointed out.
