Great book by a great Doc! A must read by those suffering from allergies and asthma!

I got this book about two weeks after my 9-year-old son suffered his first asthma attack. After reading it, I feel much better prepared to cope with his condition. The author's tone is reassuring without being condescending. And there is an enormous amount of information, everything from how to choose a specialist to charts describing the effects and usual dosages of the most common medications. Since I have been suffering from allergies and sinus problems myself this spring, it was especially useful. I think this might be the best investment in our family's health I ever made!

Finally, a book that quickly synthesizes complex information into usable pieces! Allergies and asthma are de-mystified with practical examples. Dr. Berger's approach is uplifting, reassuring, and warm. No preaching or insistance that you do things his way or no way as in the case of so many other authors of asthma and allergy books. Blending U.S. environmental and social justice activists together in the late 1970s, the E.J. movement has grown to become a significant multinational political force. The numerous authors who have contributed to this volume explore the movement's rich history and chronicle many of the noteworthy struggles that have improved the lives of many people and can provide inspiration and hope to us all.The introductory chapters include a Foreword by Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who played an important role in a campaign that successfully relocated the largely African-American community of Norco, LA away from a highly polluting oil refinery; a Preface by Peggy Morrow Shepard, who believes that the E.J. movement is key to reinvigorating the mainstream environmental organizations; and an Introduction by Mr. Bullard, who recounts how some of the core principles of the E.J. movement were institutionalized at the EPA during the Clinton adminsitration.The book is divided into four sections.The first section, "A Legacy of Injustice" discusses the history of the E.J. movement. The Quest for Environmental Justice is an interesting collection of essays that highlight several case studies of activism with a predominant USA angle to them. Edited under the supervision of Dr. Bullard the book falls short of offering a strong underpinning to the environmental justice thinking and challenges, to instead concentrate on examples of abuses, and community actions.Additional debate and analysis around the challenges facing environmental justice, and social equity, and the different currents of policy affecting it would have made a more interesting collection. The book feels like an addendum to other volumes by Bullard that are far more focused. Here after a generic if solvent highlight of where environmental justice is at as a movement, he jumps to stress the importance of it for color communities, which while an essential part of the issue, feels somewhat unestructure as if one were working on the assumption that the preceding work of Bullard is know by the reader, and leaving a hint of excluding flavor when one takes a global perspective.It is true that the work around environmental justice and African American communities in the USA is probably the most important contributions of Bullard, but here it feels like a drag for a volume that would have seem to aspire embracing other communities and a broader outlook. Fortunately some of the contributions explore case studies affecting other communities and a couple venture to narrate struggles outside the USA. A few of those essays do offer a very insightful analysis of environmental justice challenges and there resides the strenght of the volume. However, for a broader, more comprehensive an incisive work on environmental justice, instead of a collection of case studies one would need to go elsewhere.

Very informative. The book teaches the material in a manner that can be understood effectively. I learned a lot of important factors about environmental injustices.

I originally just bought this book since I needed it for this one class i was taking. I ended up liking this book. Really opened my eyes to many injustices that happen in the city. This is true especially to minorities. To all those active in the civil rights movement, this should be part of the collection.

100% perfect!!

Bullard, et al. have good intentions in that they want to correct environmental injustice and racism. However, sometimes they are too quick to call racism or get bogged down in statistics. My favorite chapter was the one on the Vieques people of Puerto Rico. If anything, I learned a lot about world politics.

The book is neat and also in good shape. It served its purpose.

I have had this book before and used it with the children in my classroom to celebrate Chinese New Year. I could not find it in my local library as I had before, so I checked on Amazon and, as always, they had the book. We read the book and then used the recipe in the back of the book to make a very tasty soup with the children ( great science, math, and prediction activites ). The results were just as I hoped they would be - a great hands-on learning experience. The children loved preparing the vegetables, predicting if these truly unusual-looking vegetables would taste good, and eating the soup. I recommend this book as a great teaching tool and a wonderful experience for children.

Each Grace Lin book I get, I am just so impressed by her talent! Every child loves to get their hands into dirt and growing flowers or vegetables is always fun and gives the child great pride to show everyone their hard work and or beautiful flowers!Every child wants to be just the same as their friends, especially those in the neighborhood. Mom and daughter start in the spring to plant their garden and while everyone else in the neighborhood each have their own way of tending their gardens totally different from how her and her mom garden. When their plants appear they look like grass, where other neighbors' appear they look like normal plants. The little girl constantly asks questions as all children do, why mommy, why mommy and her mommy patiently answers each of her daughters questions. When others in the neighborhood have beautiful flowersthat smell so good, the little girls garden has what she sees as ugly plants with no beautiful scents. Once the vegetables are ready to be harvested the little girl and mother gather their wheelbarrow with their vegetables. Later that afternoon the daughter is out playing in the yard and smells a wonderful smell and it's coming from her house! Her mom has made soup using their harvest and her mom gives her a bowl..... it tastes so good! Then there comes knocking at their door and it's the little girls neighbors wanting to trade their beautiful flowers for a bowl of soup. The Mom tells the neighbors about each vegetables and the next spring the little girl notices her neighbors growing " Ugly Vegetables" too!I love that Lin includes a receipe to make using these so called "ugly vegetables" and that she included their names and even sounded them out. Keep up the good work Mrs. Lin and I'll keep on buying your books and singing praises to anyone who'll read my reviews!

This book brings back memories for me as a Chinese girl growing up in Texas. Feeling different. Then appreciating my mother's vision and skills. The brightly colored illustrations are fun, and the story has been a wonderful jumping off point for conversations between my mother, my kids, and myself about culture and community. It's a family favorite.

This was a great addition to my unit using Grace Lin's, The Year of the Dog, as she actually wrote the story as a child.

This was a beautifully illustrated book and a wonderful lesson in gardening! My seven and four year old grandchildren enjoyed it very much. Both love to garden and even help with the weeding! (a PLUS)

Bought this for my 3 year old granddaughter along with some gardening tools, gloves & hat for her birthday because last summer she had a fantastic time with her other grandmother as she tended her garden in the Czech Republic - it reminded me of the photos I received of her during that time. Even though it is about Chinese vegetables, it seemed the ideal book. She loves looking at the colorful illustrations and "reading" it to herself - over & over! My 11 year old granddaughter is a fan of Grace Lin books, too. (Me, too!)

As much as I want her to understand her birth culture I am also learning at the same time. We have several Grace Lin books in our library at home and have loved everyone of them. What I love about this book is that it illustrates how we all have something to teach one another and that through our sharing and teaching we actually become comfortable with ourselves. This isn't just a book about some unusual vegetables, it's a story about people and what we each have to offer the world.

With a collection of information that is, to my knowledge, found nowhere else in English (both on points linguistic and regarding the history of scholarship), this work is neglected to the detriment of every student and interpreter.The essays which comprise the book are of the highest critical caliber (not less than the best essays to appear in NTS, JBL, or JSNT) and together they document in brief compass facts somehow missed in the thousands of pages of ink spilled elsewhere in recent Pauline debate--facts which might otherwise have prevented trips through several cul-de-sacs of the past 30 years. The essays by Westerholm and Reinhardt alone, in fact, are worth the entire price of the volume. If you are looking seriously into subject of "Paul & the Law" (still more, if you are writing on it), you really ought to begin (or at least end) with this collection of studies, as they will enlighten and save you from a thousand mistakes. IMO, this book is among the best 5 books written on Paul in English in the post-Sanders era--and, in my reckoning, at the top of that list.

It ended up subverting a lot of my expectations.There was a chapter that started off talking about the flying broomsticks - maybe it's rockets, maybe it's anti-gravity? Nope! Here's a bunch of stuff about psychotropic mushrooms that create the sensation of flying.Still worth the read even if it wasn't what I expected.

My best friend had a bone martow transplant and this book was extremely helpful. I read this and others before hand and all though it is a little old it was still very relevant. It gave me a better understanding of what was coming. Although she didn't read any of them I was able to answer her questions about what was normal and what wasn't. It is helpful for caregivers and patients. It is simply written which is hard to find when it comes to medical procedures. I would recommend to anyone who needs a little guidance in this area.

The book was new.....just like I purchased off the shelf!. Price was one penny plus shipping. I purchased this guide for my sister and me. She will soon receive a stem cell transplant, and I am a complete sibling match for the transplant. . The stories of survivors was very helpful and encouraging. I was thrilled to find this guide available for purchase.

I read this book and then mailed it to my brother who was about to have a BMT. I was his donor. It helped us prepare for a most difficult decision and time. I would urge any BMT patient to read this book and others like it.

This is nice looking hard-cover third grade text book for social studies. I did not personally like the book too much. i did not think it gave enough detail for a textbook. Luckily for us we only use the book as a reference and use online sources and materials to expand on the topic. For that the book is great. It really is not a stand alone type book for a child's education.It has nice graphics, easy to read and is laid out in a easy to understand format. There is also a website that goes along with the book to help with additional activities for the lessons covered. I

Using this for homeschool. So far so good. The book came in perfect condition. I was very pleased about that.

Common sense book I guess it is okay as a guide, but really my daughter didn't need a book to explain these concepts. She already knew them.

Useless information in a really boring format. It skips from subject to subject without any depth (even for a 3rd grade book). I was so disapointed by this book. I stuck it in the recycling bin. I didn't even donate it to the library (like we usually do).

I absolutely found this book to be helpful in homeschooling my son last year.

But the wisdom that had befriended them all these years refused to blind itself to reality, and nominations were called for; one of them was Emiliano Zapata. He was not rich, because no one there was, but his family owned property, livestock, and in carrying this on, Zapata showed a business head, but also a responsibility to his people and his involvement if community affairs began early. He was also a master horseman; and all of this taken together was enough to inspire confidence in those who desperately needed a young, intelligent emerging leader against the travail that had daily threatened the very existence of the village. And early on, he noticed the disparity of the classes, the inequitable, the amassing of personal fortunes by those in "control of politics" built on the backs of others; and in the 1909 "devaluing" of the large, already wealthy landowners so that their taxes were essentially circumvented, reshuffled the tax burden to the small, already overburdened farmers was a blatant slap in the face..talk about "taxation without representation". These are the seeds of Revolution, sown on fertile soil, and Zapata returned from stint in the army ready to put what he had learned to use in an entirely different direction.I became interested in the Mexican Revolution not only because of my interest in our own of 1776, but because I happened to see a movie entitled "Viva Zapata" which featured Marlon Brando and Anthony Quinn. It was only a movie, but it was intriguing, I could tell it followed Mexican history and because I had not read much about Mexico itself since a historical textbok briefing (very brief) in high school, I found this book. It's a scholar's accounting, complete with footnotes, but the thread of story is not lost even so; such a history can never be dull, because the events themselves prevent that. It's another clear example of what happens when oppressed people are pushed to the edge of their endurance.If history repeats itself, it's dangerously close again today. Mexico is a land of immense potential, and if that potential were tapped and realized through equal opportunities and the resulting labors of all of their people that would surely happen were those opportunities there, there would be little reason for them to be wading across rivers and digging under fences today.Heroes may still be out there somewhere, but they are far and few between - and small wonder, since both they and we know what will be required of - and extracted from - them. This fine book is recommended as a source for anyone wishing to read of Mexico and it's past.

John Womack has written the quentessential detailed work aboutthe geography, culture, surroundings, people, what impacted Zapata's decisions, what made himboth a strong and weak leader..and mostimportantly his overall impact on the Mexican Revolution. The book pulls no punches in being both critical and complimentary, to both Zapata and other key figures.For me, therefore, it rang true with a high degree of integrity. Having said that,I need to read more to be sure of what the author claims as truth. Yet hisattention to detail and incredibly referencing, lend great credence tothe high quality of the effort.Though I enjoyed the detail, at times it gets a bit overwhelming.I sure would fail at completing a crossword puzzle regarding who and whereand when and why for each campesino mentioned.And yet, as a book that gives you the whys, and wherefores, the ins and outs,Zapata's strengths and weaknesses, why he appealed to his compadres andwhy, in the end, he was killed... this book does it...in spades.If you want to know all the details, then this book is a must for you.If I were to write this book, which I could not, the detail is crushing andthe bibliographical references incredibly thorough, I wouldwrite fewer characters and a bit more about the heart and passion.Womack includes passion, but because of all the detail, some of theheart gets lost...for me. And it is hard to keep all the characters straight.But overwhelmingly interesting and like a dictionary of Zapata's involvementalong with each and every character who impacted him and therevolution.In the end, it leaves one saddened for what might have been, and yet enlightened and uplifted to know that Zapata, though he died way too early, didn't die without achieving significant results. Could he haveachieved much more had he lived, had he been a different personality, had he, blah, blah, blah...maybe. That one is for the professional historians to chew over. I loved him before comingto read the book and I respected his love for his people and sense of justice equally at the end.Current revolutionaries, such as Hugo Chavez, would do (have done) their country a favor were they to haveexhibited and stayed true to Zapata's committment to ethics, fairness and justice.

Is a very complete history, but somewhat difficult to read.Would be better with shorter sentences, and less flowery words.Would also be nice if it told a little more about Mexican culture.Never the less, I greatly enjoyed reading it.

Let me say this is a book laden with names and places that are all but impossible to recall yet the flow and the ensuing narrative allows for an overall familiarity and eventual appreciation of the myth and the man and the truth of the times. Model's struggles are those of half a country or more. a microcosm of the world of the early 20th century when empires were starting to ebb from the hemisphere, autonomy seemed feasible, but outside influence reared its head whenever instability seemed possible and especially when resources were at risk. I believe this could be a fair view of the struggle as men are portrayed with strengths and weaknesses on full display. One beautiful moment in particular involves watching a modest agri-socialist community emerge out of design, necessity, and desire. A model not for everyone and not for every period in history but a small and simple Utopia that brought peace and relative prosperity to a region starved for both even to this day.

Really enjoyed this book. Gave me a better understanding of what the Mexican revolution was all about and why it took place. And what they all endured just for survival.
