About the Author

Nicholas Giordano obtained his B.S. at Purdue University and his Ph.D. at Yale University. He has been on the faculty at Purdue since 1979, served as an Assistant Dean of Science from 2000-2003, and is currently the Hubert James Distinguished Professor of Physics. His research interests include electrical conduction, superconductivity, and magnetism in ultra-small metallic structures, along with musical acoustics and the physics of the piano. Ideas for this book grew out of the course on computational physics that he developed and taught in the early 1990s. Professor Giordano earned a Computational Science Education Award from the Department of Energy in 1997, and in 2004 was named Indiana Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Hisao Nakanishi earned his B.S. from Brown University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His Ph.D. research concerned scaling and universality in a geometric phase transition called percolation and he has been interested in scale-invariance ever since. During his first postdoctoral work at Cornell he was introduced to the problem of surface critical phenomena such as wetting phase transitions, and later at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he started working on the statistics of diffusion and polymers in earnest. .In 1992 Professor Nakanishi was a part of the team that won a Gordon Bell Prize for the application of parallel computing to a problem in polymer statistics. More recently he has also put on another hat as a developer of a computer-based interactive exercise system which is used by a few thousand students at Purdue each year.

Ok this book is good, it conveys lessons that novice programmers can understand. My only problem with it was that it was my textbook for college where we were instructed to use Matlab on homework problems where this text uses Fortran to show examples. If you know Fortran then go for it, if not, then it would be best to look somewhere else. There are plenty of Computational Physics texts that use different programming languages that one could be familiar with.

A good guide in learning how to apply computational physics to various problems.

It is a great introduction, but some explanations to the topic are unclear or murky

Let me begin by saying that I have read through many books on computational physics and this is by far the one that I prefer. It seems suitable for use in a classroom or for self study. The writing style is clear, almost conversational and new concepts are developed carefully and can be easily understood.The unfortunate part of the book is of course the use of Basic for the examples. I agree with the author that this language, and especially the version used, is suitable and even easy to use for the subject at hand, however it is not an industry standard language.I would much rather see C, C++ or even Python used for the examples. It is not hard to translate from the Basic versions, but many readers of this book will be scientists, but not generally computer scientists. And they may be learning to program as they are using this book. If the examples were written using basic C syntax, the reader would be well on his way to learning not only computational physics, but a widely used language as well.With this light criticism, I really like the book and have not found anything that I would prefer regardless of the programming language used.

This book is straightforward and enjoyable. Takes 'theory' for messy real world problems and makes it practical with rather simple methods.

The book came in better time and better repair than I had expected. Cover and pages near-new, arrived on the first day of the predicted time (like 4 days or something). I would recommend to anyone who's found a good deal through them.

I'm glad I bought this book. I was hesitant at first, while perusing it in the bookstore, because it seemed to be aimed at an audience that is, well, too undergraduate. However the book gets directly to the essence of the algorithms used to carry out simulations: nothing extraneous. Within an hour after sitting down to read a chapter, one can often have the first working code finished. It is through trying simulations, playing with parameters, and seeing what happens that one starts to get a feel for the models which are otherwise just differential equations on paper. The style of exposition is informal and lively. The range of subjects covered is diverse. It presumes the reader is familiar with physics of the models discussed, yet each chapter begins with a short review. The book is organized in a way that permits skipping around, which I like, and I found that the exercises are packed with suggestions and new things to try. All in all it is a very good book for someone who may know next to nothing about a particular physics model and wants to learn it though computer simulation.Since the publisher doesn't include the "search inside" feature, here is a list of chapter headings:First numerical problems. Realistic Projectile Motion. Oscillatory Motion and Chaos. The Solar System. Potentials and Fields. Waves. Random Systems. Statistical Mechanics, Phase Transitions, and the Ising Model. I have found this book to be an outstanding resource for teaching computational physics. As others have noted, the emphasis on this book is generally on the physics with less emphasis on the methods, but enough to usefully reproduce what they have done. I am not sure how it would work as a textbook for the students and, indeed, I have not tried to use it in this way. Certainly, at least in an undergraduate course, it would need to be supplemented by more discussion of numerical methods.

My 10yo hockey obsessed daughter has read most of the books in this series. Her favorites were Rebel Glory & Winter Hawk Star. She'd give those 5, with Winter Hawk Star being her absolute favorite.The reading level is slightly below a 10yo, but she loves hockey so much that she devours these books anyhow.

Another great book from this author! I really like his "Lightning on Ice" Series.This book is about a hockey goalie named Joseph Larken. Trouble is stirred up when a girl goalie joins the team. There are steroids, fights, and other things going on. Has great suspense and keeps a person reading.

To be honest, I have only read a little in this book so far. However, I have looked at other books on inventing, some of them just have too much information and I do not have the time to read so much. This book is a little more concise. Also, I like that it covers many topics. It is not just about how to develop your invention, but should you pay a professional for instance to help write a patent application (if you intend to do that). It also speaks about the marketing aspect. After all, we want to make money with our invention. I like to skip back and forth to different parts as I think about the process and this book makes that easy. The size is great. I can hold it in my hands without getting tired. I'm not an e-book reader person and this is great as a good paper reference.

It is well written but it does not have things in the best order. For example you should start with chapter 9,10, 11 and 12 before going to chapter. I am an experience inventor with products on the market. This was better than most of the books but not that great.

Easy to read, straight forward advice for anyone interested in the business side of inventing.

This book explodes with information. But it doesn't walk you through step by step. You can kinda start anywhere in the book. So it's got me like... Ok ... Where do I start. I had to do some other research to figure that out. But I'm glad I purchased it.

Very good. 5 out of 5 stars.

Unfortunately we order the UK version by mistake. So be careful when you order.

I seldom review anything, but thought it my duty to ding this one. The author is barely literate in English and writes like it's a second language. The "booklet" - because it's VERY short - is littered with typos and could have done with an editor. While I was hoping to get some layman's language information about Hep C itself, the only information here is about the 4-5 main treatment medications, with an emphasis on the generic Harvoni available from India. It reads like a shill from that pharma company. Don't waste your time or money - you can get better information about the meds.

The writer speaks from her heart. She outlines every aspect of the disease and the process she went through to get her medication. She's definitely not a native English speaker but she gets her point across. My husband and I went through the same channel as the author suggested and we received our meds and are now cured. Our SVR is good and its already been a year since we finished treatment. The non profit Soul of Healing Trust and Sunnypharma.org sites are down but I called the number 858-952-1077 and got through. I guess their new website is sunnypharma.infoWe are just happy we are over this disease, finally. Exactly as the title says, zero help from insurance.

The reading content about handling IBS and diet in this book is invaluable. However as a vegan, I can only create a small amount of recipes as Heather uses a lot of egg whites in her cooking. I can replace with a flax egg for some recipes, but in some of her breads she uses SIX egg whites and I am not sure how a flax egg will work in that. I will try and experiment using aquafaba on some recipes. But the recipes where meat is the main protein I cannot eat. I would love for Heather to come out with a vegan cookbook, especially since Heather admits the more she figures out the IBS the higher the probability she will become vegan. Cutting out eggs has been essential to my IBS, and I just generally feel better cutting out meat products not necessarily correlated with my IBS on that front though.

I have learned so much and can now understand why I was sick a lot in my teens and then into my 30's but that al needed with radical surgery to remove my entire colon in 1976. I was 36. This book is amazing but IBS is not what I had. I truly had ulcerative colitis for 5 years. I am now 78 years old and have lived with my little rosebud only side for 42 years. BUT...both my daughters are living with IBS and they LOVE this book.

Oh my goodness... I do not have words to describe how thankful I am for this book! I have suffered for years with IBS and I have been told that I had to just "deal" with it, or take tons of drugs with scary sounding side-effects. When I started reading this book I was taking 4 medicines from my GI and I was STILL having episodes of IBS.To start off with, just reading that there are other people going through what I am going through and that I am not crazy/it's not all in my head... because a lot of Dr's try to say IBS is a mental problem. It was wonderful just to know I was not alone and that I wasn't a freak for having an internal GPS of all the bathrooms in the area!Now that I have implemented what I read, I am on NO medicine, and I rarely ever have an episode. If I do, it's because I didn't follow the rules and I always can pinpoint the exact culprit, which makes it easier to avoid that food next time. I honestly didn't do the recipes in the book, I just used the informational part of the book, and it was just what I needed. But I am glad I read through the recipes because I use some of the substitutions suggested and they work perfect - no IBS, same great taste.I wish I could give this book to every GI doctor on the planet, and put it in the waiting rooms; everyone seriously NEEDS to read it. If you are suffering from IBS, it will change your life!

I've personally been ill-stricken with the unforgiveable disease known to many as IBS. And like most sufferes, I too have fallen victim to the midnight hospital vitists, numerous testing (ultra-sounds, CT scans, & blood work), and impassive doctors that draw no possible conclusions except for to eat more fiber & drink more water. For 4 years, my quality of life has been jeaopardized and is something, no looking back in regaret, I can't take back.One word to describe this illness? Miserable. One word to describe this book? Godsend. The description of the illness is well-written with easy literature that even a teenager could understand. First 20% is vital information needed to understand how IBS affects the average sufferer - a crash course in biology. The last 80% includes recipes to help kick-start your diet change. Unfortuntate for me, I live in Hawaii where many of the ingredients are either hard to locate or are very expensive. But, nothing a whole foods store can't fix! In addition, my only complaint at this point is that I have to modify a lot of my meals for both myself and my family. They prefer my "old style" of cooking, but since giving up red meats, this task has been a lil more overwhelming than I anticipated. Either way, if you're considering this book for purchase, you won't regret it!

When I developed IBS some years ago, there wasn't too much available to explain what was going on. I was seeing a doctor who gave me a short list of things to avoid, but his time was so limited that I needed some other help. I found this book which was so helpful, and is still my Go To for information. It's more than a cookbook. The author really describes what's happening to you, and gives good information about what you can and can't eat. Heather Van Vorous is THE guru for IBS. My local health food store carries several of her products which I use daily. A friend was recently diagnosed with IBS and I loaned her this book. She loved it so much she ordered her own copy. A Must for anyone with IBS.

I like this cookbook as I am learning how to cook for my son who has a severe case of IBS. This book has a nice introduction section, helping me understand what he can/cannot eat and why. This book is well organized and has a lot of recipes. Some menus are included as well. I am so glad I bought this book.

The author is a patient of IBS and is not an authoritive doctor on the matter. Her descriptions of symptoms and treatments are right on with my life and that of those people who followed her blog.
