This is a short book with a pretty quick overview of Revolutionary War Boston. The writing is not stellar - it feels sort of like reading a high school history report, but at least that means it is accessible to everyone. Read a sample and if you like it, then it's probably worth the purchase. The sections at the end of each chapter that tell you about current landmarks and how they relate to historical events will be useful when visiting - but again, it is written to what seems to be a middle school audience.

The author has brought lively and fresh storytelling to an historical narrative that many of us may find familiar. Walk the streets of Boston with its famous and not-so-famous rebels through these pages and see the history of city during the 1760s and 1770s in a new light. Recommended for both the well-read and the novice who want to understand Boston and the years prior to the American Revolution anew.

Love the book. Was hoping for some information about the Tea Party participants and the members of theboston Masonic Lodge. I know that information is difficult/impossible to come by so I'll keep reading.

This is one of my favorite Boston books. I thought it was the easiest to read and the most interesting out of all the Revolutionary Boston books I read for my upcoming trip. I really like the "then and now" section at the end of every chapter.

Reading this book a second time now - bought it prior to my first trip to Boston and was of great value as it made the history tours all the more interesting. I really thought the author did a great job capturing the era. Download a sample and if you like it the rest of the book is just as good.

I enjoyed this book immensely. A fun informative book

Excellent and entertaining read that keeps your attention with a great depiction of the events in Boston that led up to the American Revolution. This book will help you understand the characters and events that you know you should know in history and their importance. The author has a unique ability to make these characters jump off the page and make you feel like a bystander standing on the streets watching one of the Bostonians crazy riots. A recommended read to anyone.

Educational and informative this book does its darndest to engage the audience by taking a reader-friendly approach on how our tax system works by asking logical questions and answering them in straight-mannered fashion. Professors Burman and Slemrod with background in economics and specifically tax policy do an effective job of sharing their wisdom with the public. This informative 301-page book is broken out into the following three Parts: 1. How are we Taxed?, 2. The Costs and Benefits of Taxation, and 3. A Tour of the Sausage Factory.Positives:1. A well-written and accessible book on tax policy.2. Great command of the topic.3. Excellent format. Smart decision to ask layperson-styled questions and provide direct responses. Cartoon inserts help break up the monotony and add much needed humor to a dry topic.4. Does a good job of defining terms. "A tax is a compulsory transfer of resources from the private sector to government that generally does not entitle the taxed person or entity to a quid pro quo in return (that's why it has to be compulsory)."5. Some interesting tidbits of note, "In early 2011, antitax crusader Grover Norquist accused conservative Republican Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) of breaking his no-tax-increase pledge by proposing an amendment to end a tax credit for ethanol. Norquist objected to the elimination of the credit because he views it as a tax increase, while Senator Coburn considered it to be a spending cut."6. The use of taxes as a form of regulation. "A cap-and-trade system can have similar effects to a carbon tax. Under this system the government sets a limit on total emissions, and then allocates or auctions a number of permits equal to that amount. The permits can then be bought and sold, which establishes a market price."7. Straightforward explanation of how taxes vary across the federal, state, and local governments. "The federal government's revenue comes predominantly from individual income taxes (43.5 percent in 2009) and social insurance and retirement receipts (42.3 percent), while only 6.6 percent comes from corporate income taxes and about 3 percent from excise taxes."8. Standout facts. "The cost of government is measured much more accurately by what it spends than by what it collects in taxes."9. Payroll taxes in perspective. "Although it's conceivable that consumers or capital owners could bear part or all of the tax burden, statistical studies have almost uniformly concluded that workers bear the entire burden of both the employer and employee portions of the payroll tax."10. The arguments for and against lower capital gains tax rates.11. Interesting discussion on why we tax corporations and how some get away with paying no income tax. For example, the New York Times reported that General Electric, one of the largest companies in the world, paid no income tax in 2010 despite worldwide profits of over $14.2 billion and U.S. profits of $5.1 billion.12. Did you know? "Oregon and Delaware are sales tax havens--they levy no sales tax at all."13. It goes over what seems to be a countless variety of taxes: use, luxury, excise, sin, Pigouvian, flat, estate, property...to name a few.14. The most progressive estate tax is..." For sure, the estate tax is the most progressive tax in the federal tax system. The Tax Policy Center estimates that, in 2011, 97 percent of the tax will be collected from the estates of households in the top 5 percent of the income distribution, and 78 percent from the richest 1 percent. By comparison, only 58 percent of personal income tax revenues are collected from the top 5 percent and 34 percent from the top 1 percent."15. Strong conviction on what is not true. "It is not true that cutting taxes by itself will guarantee a spurt of growth. We know this by observing that some countries with substantially higher tax takes are doing quite well, thank you. We know that higher tax rates on the rich do not guarantee economic disaster, because in the 1950s and 1960s, when the U.S. top individual tax rates exceeded 90 percent, the U.S. economy performed very well indeed. Better than in decades since, on the whole, in the rate of growth of GDP and productivity. We know that lowering tax rates will not boost the economy so much that revenues will go up rather than down. We know this by observing that recent tax cuts in the United States and in other countries were inevitably followed by bigger deficits."16. Worthwhile quotes. "President Lyndon Johnson once said: "The most damaging thing you can do to any businessman in America is to keep him in doubt, and to keep him guessing, on what our tax policy is."17. Tax subsidies. "Tax subsidies add up to more than $1 trillion per year. That's not chump change, but, until recently, it's been off limits in any bipartisan budget negotiations in Congress because Republicans have been unwilling to consider anything that might be labeled a tax increase."18. One of the more interesting chapters, "Tax Administration and Enforcement". Good stuff! "Overall, in fiscal year 2010, 1.1 percent of individual income tax returns, 1.4 percent of corporation income tax returns, and 10.1 percent of estate tax returns were audited."19. Reality. "While tax revenues are at the lowest level as a share of GDP in more than fifty years, they are expected to increase as the economy rebounds and the stimulus measures expire. However, population aging and rising health care costs will put unprecedented pressures on the federal budget. Unless Congress figures out a radical cure for health cost inflation, services would have to be cut drastically from current levels to balance the budget with the tax system of current law."20. Political reality. "The era of surpluses died because the younger Mr. Bush was not about to repeat his dad's mistake. His vice president, Dick Cheney, growled that "deficits don't matter." Mr. Bush cut taxes by trillions of dollars while creating a huge prescription drug entitlement program, waging two wars, and increasing non-defense discretionary spending even faster than Mr. Clinton. Mr. Bush left office with a burgeoning deficit and record-low approval ratings, but both sides continued to embrace the two Santa theory. Candidate Barack Obama criticized Mr. Bush's fiscal profligacy, but proposed new spending programs and tax cuts that would have increased the deficit almost as much as Mr. Bush's policies. Candidate John McCain was more restrained on spending, but his huge promised income tax cuts would have led to even larger deficits."21. Links to notes and a helpful glossary of terms.Negatives:1. As an example: tax policies by president, timeline of tax reforms and implications, to name a few.4. Failed to take advantage of the more controversial aspects of tax policy. A chapter on the major scandals involving tax evasion would have added some spice to this book.5. Some hot-topic buttons were purposely ignored or barely mentioned: income inequality, religious tax breaks, Affordable Care Act (does mention the 3.8% tax on investment income for individuals with income over $200,000, and couples with income greater than $250,000).In summary, this is a very solid book on tax policy but no matter how you slice it, it remains a very dry topic. The authors do well in explaining the basics of how the tax policy works and how it might be made better. The book is well written, accessible and provides a helpful glossary of terms. The book lacks spice but it is a welcomed reference for us laypersons in tax policy. Gravelle, "Plutocrats: The Rise of the New Global Super-Rich and the Fall of Everyone Else" by Chrystia Freeland, and "Deficits, Debt, and the New Politics of Tax Policy" by Dennis S. Ippolito.

I bought this book after I finished my 2012 taxes, looking for a no-nonsense hopefully non-partisan primer on the US tax system. The authors' approach was perfect for introducing tax policy in all its complexity. The question-and-answer format helped immensely, lending a sense of casual conversation. You would expect a book on taxes to get complicated really quick, but this stayed just basic enough for a non-expert taxpayer like me to understand the tax code. There were very few passages that I got lost in and skipped over.This first edition was published just before the January 2013 changes in tax policy by Congress, so it's best to get informed of those changes while reading some of the most up-to-date passages in the book. If you're curious about the different types of taxes on all levels (federal, state, local, etc.), and you want to know how the money you pay in taxes each year contributes to the US economy at large, then you'll love reading this book.

Tax policy and tax reform ideas seem to be a never-ending story in the news these days -- while the public seems more and more confused and lack an understanding about the fundamental principles needed to effectively evaluate tax policies. Burman and Slemrod do an excellent public service by offering this book in an easy to understand manner. The writing is crisp, clear and even at times funny (and not just funny to a tax economist). As the other reviewers on this page have noted, the authors do an excellent job presenting tax concepts in a non-politically biased manner. This book is useful for people on both sides of the political aisle and especially for citizens looking for a book to help explain the economic and public policy tradeoffs associated with tax policy. This book will also make an excellent primer for a public policy class on tax policy...and I will likely use it myself in future classes.Taxes are not only the price we pay for a civilized society, taxes are also the price we pay as a society that uses the tax code to try and achieve social policy objectives, such as equality, income redistribution, home ownership, savings incentives, work incentives, healthcare coverage, economic stimulus, etc...the list goes on and on. These social policy goals have both economic and societal costs and benefits -- Burman and Slemrod do a good job explaining these tradeoffs.If everyone in this country read this book and came away with a proper understanding of the incidence/burden of various forms of taxation (Chapter 2) or how some tax breaks can rightly be classified as spending (Chapter 7 - Burman's letter to Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show" on tax expenditures is a definite must read), then we might actually be able to pass legislation and institute a tax system that we truly deserve...not the one we currently have.

Explains how our tax system works. Describes the taxes and the effects of taxes. Written by two experts in taxes. Easy to understand. Relies heavily on evidence to support their conclusions. I like that they tell what is known and what is unknown. Highly recommended as a quick intro to taxes and tax policy.

I read this book last weekend and I thought it was excellent. The authors did a great job presenting complicated facts about the tax code, specific taxes, the incidence of taxes and more in a simple and neutral way. I say this even more comfortably that I am of a rather different school of thoughts than the authors. If you are interested in tax issues but don't know enough or you know a lot and simply want learn about how to talk about taxes in a way that won't put people to sleep, this book is a must read.

I was clearly born to be an engineer and as a teenager told my mother we would one day control the Earth. It would happen gradually, the way my great grandmother had a pace-maker to assist her ailing heart. We'll do the same to nature, gradually replacing its function with our own design. Think genetic engineering, then in its infancy when he wrote this book, now widely practiced in our food production, despite many objections. Bill's not optimistic about our ability to avoid this fate. Neither am I. But if you agree that it's worth trying, even in the face of failure, to preserve the mystery and power of nature, this book may give you some inspiration to keep trying.

Mr. McKibben's book demonstrates clearly how humans have rushed headlong into "improving" our mode of living and created massive injury to our homeplace: Earth. Hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis larger, more numerous and more destructive than we have ever seen before are showing us - if we are not too blind to see - that we are creating crises with ever-increasing speed. Earthquakes in places we have never seen before, huge oil and sludge spills that are killing our wildlife, destroying .our vegetation, making neighborhoods unlivable in the foreseeable future: all are eloquent signals that we have no choice but to change our thinking and our behavior.This destruction did not begin in our century. It has merely picked up increasingly more speed as we go. Nature has been reliable in spite of our unreliability toward nature. We've never seen a living passenger pigeon, because it was made extinct by hunters more than a hundred years ago. Our salmon, trying to swim upriver to spawn, are running into dams that stop them. Some of us remember DDT. It was banned in this country decades ago, but we are still living with the consequences, with some birds' eggs with such thin shells that they are crushed before they can be hatched. Soon after WWII pregnant women were giving birth to deformed babies. Many of those babies died.The time has come to recognize our failing condition and change now.Mr. McKibben has spoken,eloquently .

So, I am finally reading The End of Nature; one of my sisters who doesn't even read that much raved and told me to read it. I remember being so impressed by Bill McKibben when he published it (in the New Yorker I think), as he is the same age as me, and I admired such eloquence, scholarship and great writing from someone in their late twenties. And now, finally reading this book, I am thinking, well, I am even more impressed, because I am so struck by how beautiful the writing is in this book, on nature itself, and on man's view or idea of nature. The ideas of separateness, boundaries, limits, and humility, and that these are good things, run through my mind as I read this book. The problems existing in 1989 from global warming make me think that the book was written only recently. Anyway, I recently read Eaarth, Deep Economy, and Enough (another REAL eye-opener for me), and I surely appreciate this man (and his concern, and care, and action, to get us cracking on this big, big problem).

Very interesting to read and learn about the beginning of our understanding of climate change. Brings the scientific evidence to the forefront whether one chooses to believe or not. Obviously this was written some 25 years ago or so , so our science today is better informed. Still worth the time to read this to understand what all the controversy is about.

Quite a bit "out of date" at this time and a bit depressing though somewhat "optimistic" given present reality as perspective on its original release date. Still, the End of Nature is useful in its comprehensive treatment of the subject and remains what I believe to be an important read.

The book is a bit old, and I didn't always agree with all of McKibbin's philosophies; but 90% of the book's contents, I did agree with (can't argue with unmanipulated facts and statistics), as well as with his ideas and suggestions. The book was quite disconcerting, but TRUTH must be faced, ugly or not. I want to look up some of the 'predictions', which by now must be being fulfilled, or disproved, but I haven't the time, and I actually dread the confirmation, too. I am using this book for reference. It is/will be a big, "I told you so," to those who adhere to the old method of "ignore it and maybe it will go away," when presented with mounting evidence of our very serious environmental circumstance. But, that is little comfort to those of us who are the voices "crying in the wilderness,"--figuratively, and in the not-far-enough-future, likely a physical impossibility as our wildernesses are disappear at such an alarming rate.

Good book and informative for students going to college

This brief book is an OK overview of the college experience. I got it for a friend who is a first generation college student but think it is probably also appropriate for families who have no experience with the American college system overall.My only issue with the book is that there are quite a few mentions of alcohol (including info on how to play drinking games) but the authors could have easily also mentioned how to experience college without alcohol. In fact, to be a more up-to-date overview, that should have been presented as a section in itself.

Very generic tips that you would find on something like a Facebook article. The book looks very cute and feels sturdy and expensive.

This one was awesome and I can't wait to share it with my daughter this year. I started college the end of last year and even though I thought I knew what I needed to do this book gave me some great tips that I didn't even think of. I really think that this is going to help out my daughter even before she finishes High School when she starts next year. It gives great information for what to avoid and what do to as well as tips and tricks to dealing with choosing a major and more. If you are a freshman in high school to getting ready to graduate this is a book you NEED to read!

As a college search advisor, I love seeing materials with so much critical information in one place. This resource is highly visual and succinct in covering many of the things that a student headed to university with find advantageous to know. My children are way too young, but I am buying multiple copies of this as gifts for our students who are at this life stage~
