I have always admired Ms Vargas .She is great on camera, and beautiful in a "girl next door" way .I gave the book 3 stars after a lot of thought. I would describe it as tantalizingly short on details. She glosses over most of it, just giving us a few snippets here and there, almost requiring us to read between the lines. As several reviewers noted, a glass or two of wine now and then, and suddenly she is almost dead from alcohol poisoning? In truth it had to be a long progression. For example, she notes that, before she was even married, on the morning of September 11, 2001, she woke up badly hungover. Having spent the previous evening socializing and drinking with her fiancé and parents in a way that seemed normal to her at the time. In those early days she could shrug it off, drink Gatorade and go to the gym. The first few years after she was married, when her husband asked her to drink less, she did. Then they grew apart through various circumstances and things went downhill pretty quickly. She started going to bars alone, pretending to talk to someone on the phone who was "on their way", ie she wasn't really "drinking alone". She evidently started doing more and more desperate things, but there isn't much detail here. Again, without a lot of detail, it sounds like family members forced her into treatment several times until it finally stuck..We come to understand that anyone can become alcoholic. Elizabeth writes that she actually told her employers she was struggling with addictions to alcohol and Ambien, as though the prescription drug made the whole thing more lady-like. Alcoholism can happen to people who fail in life and drown their sorrows, and it can happen to folks who have gotten everything they have ever wanted, and still have trouble dealing with it all.The message of the book is that addiction is unpredictable, and not related to one's intelligence or love of family. Certainly, having an anxiety disorder can make one more vulnerable.With regards to her husband, I maintain he is a stand -up guy. Several reviewers have bashed him and I disagree. It isn't easy, both being in the public eye, but one person is much more successful. Also, when you are married, it isn't "my money" and "your money", it's "our money", something that many people are apparently surprised to realize all of a sudden when divorce is contemplated. His career was mostly on the wane when they got together, and she knew he had to pay his ex-wife child support, so the financial constraint was there from the beginning. No doubt, he put up with quite a bit over the years, very little of which she actually wrote about, and the addiction naturally had a devastating effect on their relationship. By the time he actually left , she had already tried rehab several times and there was no guarantee it would ever take. I just hope they are civil for the sake of the kidsI applaud her writing this book, although the fact of her addiction was leaked against her will a couple of years ago, so it hasn't been a secret. Perhaps there can be a follow up book in 5 years with more details on her career and her on-going recovery.

Elizabeth Vargas has been a favorite journalist of mine for years. I've always thought she was so elegant, classy, and well spoken with just a hint of vulnerability. I've followed a lot of the stories she's reported on and always look forward to seeing her when I tune into 20/20.I was quite shocked to learn in 2014 that she was struggling with alcohol addiction and was in rehab. I was tuning into a 20/20 episode when her colleague announced it on air as he gave her words of encouragement and support from him and others from ABC. I was really taken aback. Elizabeth always seemed so poised and "together". I just really could not reconcile this addiction with the elegant women I tune into every Friday night.I have eagerly awaited this book since her interview with Diane Sawyer on Friday, Sept. 9th. I pre-ordered it on amazon. Only had to wait three days and started reading it at about 9:15 pm on Monday night.I found her story to be fascinating. She is open and honest about her lifetime struggle with anxiety. She used alcohol to ease that anxiety in her later years. It worked at first, but later, just made the problem worse, as it always does.She is honest and very candid. I was rooting for her the whole time I was reading and still am! What a lovely woman. I wish her all the best!Highly recommend this book!

Inspiring story. Elizabeth has told my story too, and that of so many alcoholic mothers. The shame, guilt, remorse are what leads to our next drink. I suffer from anxiety and depression and have for most of my life. I want to embrace Elizabeth and tell her "to keep coming back..." Thank you for a wonderful share.

As a person struggling with extreme anxiety I felt Elizabeth gave an honest and heartbreaking description of how anxiety can effect life. Her story of addiction was heartfelt. I truly wish her the best.

I really enjoyed Between Breaths. I thought Elizabeth Vargas did an excellent job explaining the root cause of her alcohol problem and taking the reader back to her childhood days where these problems first manifested themselves. I was very impressed that Ms. Vargas did not take this opportunity to write a 'tell all' that revealed other peoples problems. She does not name names, even though she knows we can all go Google this information. I pray that each day Ms. Vargas finds the strength and courage she needs to battle her disease. I pray that in the years to come her sons will be blessed with love and wisdom and that they share their forgiveness with their Mom and I hope that she will be able to accept it when it is given. The book is an excellent read. It is enlightening and entertaining. It's honest and real.

This was a book I had difficulty putting down. I winced when she was about to do the wrong thing again and again,flinched every time she passed up getting the help she needed, and groaned all the times she was given good advice she didn't take. This had to have been a very personal and difficult story to tell, and I'm honored she told it to us. Thank you.

I've always admired Elizabeth's work on ABC and would have never guessed she had anxiety hiding in the background. She was always poised, professional and a delight to follow. I absolutely loved this book and the raw honestly she offered in sharing her story. It truly is a disease and those not affected would never understand the power of the drink. Thank you Elizabeth for sharing your personal story and how hard it was to overcome this disease. You will certainly help many others gain the courage to get the help they need and deserve to be well again.

I really enjoyed this book. She was so honest in this book and put her heart out there to show the public how hard addiction is to stop. And how she ended losing so much before she could stop. I suffer from anxiety and understand some of what she feels.

The lettering on the cover is the only calligraphy in the book. The rest is no more than practice areas for drawing circles and shapes and cursive-type writing. This would be great for someone wanting to improve their cursive penmanship, but by beginner, I think this book means someone who isn't comfortable with cursive writing. I returned it immediately upon receipt.

The product description would be much more accurate if the word calligraphy was removed from the title. If you are expecting a beginners guide to calligraphy this is not the book for you. All the work done within the book is basic script. There is none of the beautiful (even if simple) calligraphy I was expecting. If you would like to improve your penmanship this is an okay book but it is very simple and won't do much to make your handwriting more beautiful.

Excellent for anyone, very specific, clear, easy to use, good detail & great practices

This is not calligraphy, it contains no instruction, does not address tools, and doesn't even use proper calligraphy guidelines on the practice pages.

Michael Scott Moore’s book, “The Desert and the Sea” will make you wake-up from your western world slumber.I just finished reading “The Desert and the Sea”. The cliche phrase, “I couldn’t put this book down” is true! The story moves along brilliantly; the author weaves the account of his captivity with cultural history, personal past mis-giving’s and captors’ odd personalists. To be perfectly honest, I did put the book down once or twice because I found myself absorbing the author’s pain and anxiety. Moore’s book was written so well, it touched my psyche deeply. His unjust imprisonment was wrong on so many levels and stomach turning. But I stepped away from the book to mostly reflect on the lethal combination of how poverty, lack of education, political chaos, and religious zeal can turn humans toward ugliness, entropy and insanity. The book shows us that Ideas are indeed powerful; both positive and destructive.The intensity of Moore's story lies in its realness – “This isn’t fiction,” I had to keep reminding myself as I read. As an American citizen, I noted and often appreciated the author’s non-American (European) view on various political and social issues – not completely void of bias. The historical content he provided throughout the book about Somalia, pirating and the Muslim religion was greatly appreciated. And how he noted and quoted other authors who wrote about these subjects so the reader could go beyond the book and learn more. Mr. Moore should be honored as a true survivor. But most importantly, I thank him for sharing his story with those who live in simple ignorance to the favors of a civilized society. Mr. Moore's accounts of the dark and sinister Somalia pirate trade only shines a bright light on the importance of education, a free economy, democracy, and religious freedom.

Clearly the author had no business going into Somalia just to get a story of some sort. I felt little pity for him when he gets kidnapped. HIs account of the experience is not very satisfying, and I am not sure why. I felt for starters the book is too long, many of the individual aspects of his captivity, dreadful though they were were also redundant. I found my self skimming a lot. I did learn some things like today the kidnappers in Somalia can rather easily via cellphone talk to the victim's family anywhere in the world. Who would have thought. I think my main complaint about the book is its shallowness. It reads more like a newspaper accounting of the facts rather than a non fiction book. One thing though , the reader will probably not want to go to Somalia any time soon.

What a fascinating read. Even if this book were a novel instead of a true story, it would still be a riveting page-turner.I could not put this book down. It is an adventure from the first page. It describes Michael's predicament, the result of one fatal mistake any of us could make, in excruciating detail. From disgusting pirates to false hope to "man's inhumanity to man" to finding beauty in the cruelest of conditions, it carries the reader from despair to hope, and back to despair againPhilosophy, religion, colonialism, slavery, economics, politics, love, hate and the entire human condition show up.Thank you Michael for having the courage to both stay alive (I probably would have taken a few of them out and killed myself), and share this with the world. You are a true survivor and a gifted writer.

The author is frustrating. He embarks on a journalistic fact-finding trip to a very dangerous area of Somalia with what seems to me very little planning. Maybe he did the best he could considering the rampant violence in the area of Somalia that he went to visit, but I think he was naive to put himself into such unpredictable circumstances. By page 41, of the approximately 450 pages, he became a captive of the pirates! Obviously things became ugly very early on his trip.I lost empathy for the author, not because he was stupid, as he is obviously a very intelligent man, but due to his ignorance of venturing into an area that he had no “on the ground experience” in such a lawless area. I guess he wouldn’t have had much to write about if he was not held captive. Maybe doing something exceptionally daring is what it takes for a journalist to “earn his chops” as opposed to writing a previous book on surfing.

I am 88% of the way through according to my Kindle and I would say this was truly a great book. I had to look hard for a place to stop reading for the day, so that's my definition of a good book. His time in captivity and his willingness to pursue every avenue towards gaining his freedom is inspirational and the way that he wove it in with his personal life experiences made the book feel very real and very personal. I felt like I knew Michael better than the pirates did, and, of course with the language barrier, that is certainly true, but it lent a certain feeling of empathy or "relatable-ness" towards the author and the despicable situation he was in and the guilt around the hardships that he put upon his family. This book would make a GREAT movie, if it hasn't been thought of already?

This is one of the best books I've ever read, no question. Not only because of the narrative, but because of the author's profound insights into his own mind as he struggles to survive both physically and emotionally. And also because of the vivid portrayal of other people in the book and the ways they found to communicate across diverse languages.

Hahn is a gifted writer and this book exemplifies what he himself writes about in Chapter 17 "Spiritual Reading". In that chapter he makes the point that spiritual reading (such as reading this book) is a discipline that requires deliberate effort - for example setting aside 10 minutes a day for spiritual reading. Equally importantly, it requires deliberation and one shouldn't just 'power through' a stack of spiritual reading because it will greatly diminish any possibility to reflect on what one has read! It's also why one might be skeptical of people who make a habit of 'reading the whole bible every year'...one has to wonder how much of that was considered on anything more than the superficial level...Not coincidentally, this book is divided into 40 brief chapters designed to be read and then reflected on - this reflection is where I find real spiritual growth occurs. In this way, it is much like Rev. Scalia's even more excelled "That Nothing Be Lost" book published recently.

A friend asked me about and for a book of the history of traditions/rituals of the Catholic Church. Instead of just doing a practice or ritual just to be doing it, why should one do it? I told him I would look to see if I could find such a book. I found and read a sample of this book and decided to buy two copies; one for him and me. On receiving them and reading the introduction along with the first chapter on Holy Water, I believe that I have found the exact book he is looking for and that we can read and share together. Being that Scott Hahn is a convert to the Catholic faith, there is no lack of citation to Scripture along with integrating the customs and practices with one's Christian Catholic belief/faith. Should I find that it deviates from my experience I have had so far, I will re-review the book. For now, this review stands for what the book intends to deliver and we were looking to experience.

Mr.Hahn writes good apologies for all our activities in and out of church..it's useful "ammunition" when people criticize our Roman Catholic faith. I've learned some history, too. It's a very useful well written book.

This book was the underlying text for my business school negotiation class and I have recently re-read cover to cover in preparation for an important professional conversation. Stresses the importance of preparation, seeking multiple dimensions to negotiate across, and finishes with adverse conditions and tips on how to deal with them. Not as naive as other texts that simply coach you to look for "win-win" opportunities. If you are looking for formal training in negotiations this book is the right place to begin.

Wonderful book. It taught me how to be a better negotiator while being an interesting read. I went from being very shy and timid in the world of negotiation to being much more confident in myself.

This is a great book, and very informative. Yet I thought the substance started to fall away after the first half. This was mainly a result of rehashing principles of communication styles and influencing which you will get more from another book. With the principles of BATNA, and ZOPA and so on I thought it covered it perfectly (first-half). The writing style also was easy to read and it was truly enjoyable.

I love this book. I bought it for a few friends too. Every chapter wasn't relevant for me. It's more of a textbook for different types of negotiation situations. I was looking to negotiate a job offer. But the principles apply. I was able to take the information I learned and apply it to the job-offer situation and many others after. It takes the mystery and some stress out of negotiation. It teaches you to be patient and that there's a lot of research you can do. It's not just salesmanship and charisma. Plus, the book was a good read, entertaining in parts, for a business book.

It is really a good tool-book to improve negotiation skills at every level and to help create or at least look for additional value. As a non-native English speaker I would also recommend the audio book to help advance easier throigh the book.

Although this book is written from a very academic point of view it is surprisingly very practical. There are specific actions outlined that you can learn to set you up for success in any situation. Well worth reading.

Not that great of a negotiation book honestly, everything in here is pretty well known already

Purchased to learn skills to discuss political issues, especially in red vs. blue discussions. Very helpful.
