I enjoyed this book and would probably recommend it. The reason for the lower rating is because Ms. Burton apparently doesn't know when or how to use 'was and/or were '. As an author she should know basic English. The other reason is that I see no reason for the graphic pornography. I gave her credit, though, for not having it throughout the book. Aside from those two glaring problems, there were also several grammatical errors that she or her editor/proofreader should have picked up on.
Her Last Word is the story of Kaitlin Roe and Joe Adler. Fourteen years ago Kaitlin and her cousin Gina were walking home from a party on a summer night. Gina was attacked and disappeared. For years Kaitlin has been guilt-ridden because she couldn’t help the police find her cousin. Now Kaitlin returns to town and is determined to find out what happened to her cousin. Unfortunately, there are people who don’t like Kaitlin asking questions about that night. Some of the people being interviewed by Kaitlin are turning up dead.Detective Joe Adler has just returned back to work after a terrible accident. Now Adler, along with his partner Quinn, is investigating the new murders. It doesn’t take long for him to realize the new murders and Kaitlin’s questions about Gina’s disappearance are connected.Mary Burton has written another intriguing and suspenseful book. The evolving relationship between Kaitlin and Adler is well written. You will not want to miss this stand-alone story.
I have enjoyed all of the books I've read by this author and that means several. This one was tough to get through and I really didn't take pleasure in it. I liked the folks on the police side of the story: the hero John Adler, his partner Quinn and his former partner Logan. Kaitlin, the heroine, gets credit for not letting her past define her future. She overcame demons and I really wanted to love her for her resolve in doing so. She had one tstl moment and a few instances where she became almost petulant when the police wouldn't share information with her, even though it was obvious that they couldn't do so and preserve the integrity of their investigation. I found her annoying rather than engaging, and if you can't cheer for the heroine, then the reading experience isn't great.The story has a shifting timeline that was very challenging to keep up with. I was (seriously) tempted to construct a timeline on paper so that I didn't feel lost. The relationship between Kaitlin and John was a really slow simmer before they got together very late in the book (and simmer is generous). And having just finished the book, I'm left with a few questions that are not critical to the story but I see them as distracting loose ends.Do yourself a favor and don't let this be your first Burton book; I found every other book to be far superior to this one and it pains me to write that.
Another good read by Mary Burton. I generally don't care for stories that have current and past time events. However, this was written as the interview notes of the heroine who hopes to solve the mystery of her missing cousin. Handsome, rich detective becomes her hero and supports her as she is thrown into the headlights of danger many times. Characters were followed from their youth to maturity and we can easily see that everybody knows more than they are saying. The mystery is indeed solved and we have a happy ending. The reading was a little tedious but not so much that the story was not enjoyable.
It was ok. Not great. The “romance†was lacking. I didn’t really get why these two people liked each other. By the time the author finally got around to the love scene at about 90% finished, I was like, why? I just wasn’t feeling it. Kaitlin, our heroine wasn’t overly annoying, which is saying something for this genre, but did act tstl a time or two. John, our hero was ok but definitely didn’t set my world on fireThe mystery was a bit juicer. It kept me reading but was a little dull in some places. I have to note I said “he did it†as soon as the murderer was introduced, but there was enough going on so that I was interested in reading until the end. Unfortunately this story ended with a whimper, not a bang. The climax was anti-climactic and there were a few loose ends. I also didn’t like how we were told what happened and not shown. It could’ve used another 20 pages to wrap things up more satisfactorily. As it was, I felt a bit let down and said really, that’s all I get? Oh well, not a total waste of time but I was hoping for better. I enjoy this author and have really liked some of her other books. This one just didn’t do it for me.
Well... I wish I could say I loved this story because I'm a big fan of Burton's, but this book just failed to truly engage me. It never once tugged at my emotions and the character development felt a little lackluster too. Even the murders weren't as chilling as I've come to expect from this author. And while I did like Adler and even his two partners, Quinn and Logan, Kaitlin came off as whiny and bland. I seriously don't see what Adler saw in her and their romance did nothing for me whatsoever. Even the sex scene (which occurs about 90% in) I could have frankly done without.With that being said this book was enjoyable to a certain extent, as nearly all of Burton's books are. I just think this one reminded me too much of others by her, and then there was Kaitlin who I just never ever connected with. As for the killer, I was kept guessing until about 3/4 of the way through when a certain conversation clued me in on who it was. There were definitely some twists and turns though and I can't say anything was ever too predictable or obvious either. In the end I thought the story was okay, but I know from past experience that Ms. Burton can do much better.Pages & Kindle Locations: The story itself contained 353 pages and ended at location 4905 on my kindle device.
