It is a guide for living, and revelation of the nature of the universe, the soul, and most importantly the soul’s relationship with the Supreme Soul, as Dr. Schweig states in his introduction: “…..Indeed, this divine intimacy is revealed in the form of a dialogue that takes the soul on an inward journey culminating in the ultimate state of yoga, in which souls unite with the heart of God.”There are many translations of this 5,000 year old Sanskrit text and many of them have been edited down, or not translated literally, and I have found that those translations leave Krishna’s teachings a bit murky, but, Dr. Schweig’s translation is a literal translation from the original Sanskrit, thoroughly poetic, and clearly remains true to the original message of the Gita in every chapter, verse and word.

Having been a student of the Bhagavad Gita for many years now, I have read several translations and commentaries, both academic and traditional. Dr. Schweig's has struck me as deeply illuminating. While a work of rigorous scholarship it remains philosophically engaging and eminently readable. It stands out to me for its keen awareness of Krishna's original intent. Dr. Schweig expertly brings out the layers of sanskrit poetry and meaning, condensed into this ancient dialogue, unlike any other translator. I especially recommend that every reader pay close attention to his Textual Illuminations section that upon first reading, many years ago, moved me to tears. I now carry his translation with me on my kindle everywhere I travel.

Good teachers simplify the teachings so that the student can easily grasp the sacred teachings. This author does that. We were fortunate enough to have him visit our school and teach us for two days. He was able to lead us through the verses, translation and philosophy with rhythm, grace, knowledge and devotion. He was able to apply what Krishna was teaching Arjuna to conflicts we could battle today - present! Highly recommend this author and can't wait for his next translation to be published of another classical text that he could be working on.....

As a professor of religion, I have read many versions of the Gita and have assigned several of them to my classes. This translation is by far the best. I first read this translation while on a houseboat on the Keralan backwaters with the sounds of jungle temples floating across the waters, but rereading it several times hasn't dampened my initial love of the text. The translation is always accessible, yet includes the key Hindu terms with excellent concise notes that help introductory students understand the text at a deeper level, or at least understand that there are layers of meaning playing out through the text. The critical essays are also excellent. While there are some translations that are more explanatory or conversational, this translation carries the sense of gravity, inquiry and the sublime that is at the heart of the Bhagavad Gita. The critical essays are also excellent.

In addition to an excellent translation, Schweig offers some very helpful tools for fully and fruitfully entering the text including a unique introduction, a dramatis personae, a chronological list of appellations for Lord Krishna and Arjuna, literary essays, an expansive bibliography and more. If you are new to the Bhagavad Gita or a lifelong student, there is something for you in Dr. Schweig's latest offering.

Let me start by saying this is the first full version of the Bhagavad Gita that I've ever read, so I can't make any comparisons to other translations. I have read many quotes from the text, but this is the first time I've read the whole Gita beginning to end.That being said, this translation & brief commentary by Graham Schweig is phenomenal!I liken reading the Bhagavad Gita to reading Shakespeare - the text is rich with meaning, though it may be tough to grasp without extra insight. Schweig does a great job of providing a little bit of guidance while you let the text speak for itself. The final appendix, titled "On This Translation", explains Schweig's means of translating the ancient text & I highly appreciate how he did everything he could to maintain the text's integrity & complexity when presenting it in English.Having studied & practiced many of yoga's core concepts, reading the Gita is a natural extension of delving deeper into the world of yoga. The Gita adds a much richer concept of what yoga is, compared to just reading the Yoga Sutras.Whether you've had an introduction to yoga or not, Schweig does a wonderful job making the Gita understandable - and you'll likely be even more curious about yoga afterward! I can easily see myself reading & referring to this translation for many decadesNote: The Gita is a beautiful book for folks of all faiths to read, whether they consider themselves yogis or not. If you have devoted yourself to a particular religion or faith, keep an open mind when you read this book. Krishna, who is the highest God in the Hindu religion, can easily be seen as the God you have chosen to worship. Each religion has their own version of "the highest power", but more often than not, they are preaching the same message: love one another & leave the Earth better than you found it.

This is by far one of the best editions of the Gita that I have ever read. Schweig's translation is a timeless masterpiece that will touch the hearts of many for years to come.

I love her show, so it was nice to learn about Diane Rehm's life and what brought her to where she is today.What I didn't like about the book was how she wrote it -- as a journalist would, with objectivity, and just stating the facts. While she shares intimate details, I never felt connected to her. The writing didn't evoke me to feel what she felt in that moment. Maybe that was because she didn't want to relive her experiences to an even greater degree when she was writing it.Regardless, I'm happy I read it but I don't think I will reread it.

I felt as if I was sitting and chatting with Diane. I am a big fan - and this book just increased my admiration for the role she plays on PBS. Her show is one of the very best on the air, on any radio network.

British author Louis de Bernières is well known for his forays into magical realism in such novels as The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts, Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord, and The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. Here he keeps it to a minimum, though certainly the secondary characters with whom he populates his island--the drunken priest, the strongman, the fisherman who swims with dolphins--would be at home in any of his wildly imaginative Latin American fictions. This book was recommended to me when I was in the American Book Store in Paris. At the time he said that its a book that you will not put down. When I first tried to read it and put it down and go back to it. Then I was so involved in the story, in the characters that I could not put it down. He told me when he recommended it that it might take a few starts. He was on target. When you choose to spend a few hours in the world of Captain Correlli you will want to share this book with people that you really care about since it is soo special. Its a book to reread. Don't watch the movie,its alien to the book. when I was on the last page, I thought what could match this now as a most incredible read. For a while nothing. It stays with you. you care about the characters and I laughed I cried was sad and its in my bookcase as Captain Correlli's Mandolin and as Corelli's Mandolin. the US and bought in Paris copies. Writing this review perhaps its time to open it again.

This has to be the best book I have read this year. DeBernieres has woven a masterpiece out of words that flow into each other in what I can only call poetic philosophy. It has all the elements that I want in a book: historical fiction, varied and intriguing points of view expounded by unforgettable characters, , comedy, tragedy, deep love, loss, despair and redemption.I love a book that truly stretches my knowledge of history, touches chords of recognition over and over, and sends me to the dictionary often. I have read a lot over 55 years and pride myself on having an extensive vocabulary which I actually use on a daily basis, but Dr Bernieres challenged me to to a fuel of verbal pyrotechnics which he invariably won.The story centers on the Greek island of Cephalonia from the thirties to the nineties, focusing on the constant stream of invaders and catastrophes suffered by the tenacious population. But it's not just the story that grabs you; it's the way the story is told. There are sections of stream of consciousness writing, almost prose poetry, that sucked me into a vortex of thought that I found impossible to pull out of until the author finished and let go of my mind. I know I sound a bit pompous and grandiose, but I feel a deep connection to this book. In some ways it reminded me of Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose without the medieval whodunit aspect, but rather shares with that book a eloquence and profundity of thought. If you're looking for an easy read, this is not the book for you, but if you love to get lost in a book while following the flow of an interesting mind, you must experience this imaginative creation.

Corelli's Mandolin is a passionate, inventive, funny, and extravagant novel. Set on the Ionian island of Cephallonia in Greece during the Second World War, the novel is largely the story of the local physician, Dr. Iannis, and his attractive, but willful, daughter Pelagia. The story follows Pelagia’s first love with Mandras, a local fisherman who leaves to fight in the war. Soon after, Cephallonia is invaded by Italian soldiers. An Italian captain, Antonio Corelli, is assigned to live in their home, where he soon begins a romantic intrigue with Pelagia. The novel has a long list of eccentric and engaging minor characters: Carlo, the secretively gay soldier, the strong man Velisarios, the wonderfully curious Lemoni, and Pelagia’s pet pine marten, Psipsina. Some of these characters even carry their own storyline.Although it could be called a historical romance, Corelli's Mandolin is also a biting political satire. It chronicles the horrors and absurdity of war, as well as the boredom of occupation. It abounds with all the grand topics of literature. De Bernières is a master of the written word and a gifted storyteller. There are rich characterizations and witty dialogue; at times I laughed out loud. However the book is not without problems. The introduction seems long and disjointed (Captian Corelli doesn’t show up until you’re a third of the way through the story), and the ending seems drawn-out and unpersuasive. However, if you will patiently wait and you’re your way through, a story well worth reading emerges.

Usually we read a book, and, if we enjoy it, we go see the movie when it comes out. Often we are disappointed with the movie. In this case I saw the movie before I read this book. I loved the movie but was hesitant about Mr. De Bernieres, having read somewhere that he was something of a surrealist, and I prefer straight storytelling. "Corelli's Mandolin" is a wonder of a book: full of great characters, a beautifully described setting, and lots of tension and conflict. Dr. Iannis lives on the island of Cephallonia with his daughter Pelagia, who serves as his housekeeper and apprentice. She is engaged to a local fisherman who is going off to fight the Italians in Albania. With the help of the Germans, the Italians are defeated in Albania, and the Italians, Captain Antonio Corelli among them, occupy the island. Corelli is billeted in Dr. Iannis's house and soon Pelagia and he fall in love. When the Italians surrender to the Allies, the Germans take control of the island the Italians are massacred , but Corelli survives and the Greeks help him escape. The last third of the book tells Pelagia's story after Corelli leaves. She never marries and has a hard, uncertain life. It is only when she has reached old age that Corelli returns to find her. This last part of the book is not as good as the first two thirds. It is told in narrative summary as you would read in a history book. If I were the author I think I would have ended "Corelli's Mandolin" when he escaped from Cephallonia, and written a second novel about Pelagia's life afterward. That way he would have the room to tell her story fully with characters and dialogue and immediate scenes. It is easy to see why none of this made it into the movie. Despite this criticism, I fully recommend "Corelli's Mandolin".
