I would call this book an exceptional example of Korean food, not just for foreigners. But even for overseas Koreans who are curious about their culinary heritage. This is not just a cook book, it also gives brilliant examples of Korean courses, mannerism and even history of certain dishes.The book is co-sponsored by the Korean government, because the book explains that with Korean food becoming more popular to non-Asian peoples. There's a bit of confusion about proper cooking methods and even how much ingredients to use, the book hopes to standardize it and make it easy for anyone to cook Korean food.The book has full coloured examples of dishes, and is 100 pages thick. If you like a thick book with plenty of information, then this is well worth the money and effort to obtain.

This has all your favorite dishes and is richly illustrated. My beef is that the English is bizarre in places and the names of ingredients uncommon in Western cooking are not translated consistently. A real injustice to the contents which are really interesting and informative. It would not be so bad except this cookbook claims to present Korean cuisine in a systematic way in to non-Koreans. Maybe they will clean up their act in the next edition.This is still a very useful book and I hope this will make Korean cooking more accessible to those eager to cook these dishes at home. Just be prepared to roll your eyes now and then at the translation.

I bought this book with the CD's and listened to them frequently throughout my drives to and from school. I also spent about 3 months reading through this entire book. I got through it just a couple days before the exam in October, 2017. It was very readable, and not too boring, so I'll give the guy credit for that. The material is very comprehensive. The only issue I had though that has me ding one start off the book, because really it could be 5 stars and I almost gave it that, is that the questions in the book are not nearly as hard to answer as the one's on the NCE. I cannot go into any detail, but the NCE felt very difficult, the answer options were more difficult than in this book, and it really caught me by surprise. I went in feeling very confident and I immediately felt like I hit a wall on the first page. Many of us were worried about how we did and we used these study materials. However, results are in, and many (hopefully all) of my classmates appear to have passed. I was very worried about passing at all, let alone doing well. But not only did I pass, I got a very high score!! I was shocked by how well I did!So, I have got to give a lot of credit to Dr. Rosenthal's materials. I think they really helped, even if it wasn't identical material or the same kind of questions. I would still recommend this most of all. And really, I'm not sure what else I would recommend. The material I felt blind sided on was obscure, so you're gonna miss some, period. If you'd been studious in reading your textbooks throughout the program then you're probably going to have a leg-up on this test. But assuage your fears of passing and remember, the minimum cut-off scores are very low. You can miss like, literally half of the exam and still pass. The median scores are hardly above half. So if you feel like you bombed it, don't worry, you probably still passed, and if you studied well, you probably did better than you think.

Edit* Someone asked about what app I used as there are quite a few. I can't find it on my phone anymore, but the app tile was purple and I believe it looked like the book and had Howard Rosenthal's name in the app tile as well. I have looked on the play store and I don't see it and I don't see it anymore, so there is the change it has been removed since this review. I'm not sure about apple. So it might be located somewhere else.To start off with, I purchased this book to study for the NCE and used it in conjunction with Rosenthal's app and the end result was that I passed!A short summary of the App:The app goes over almost all the information the book does. It has two modes: a study mode (Multiple choice for each section with instant correct/incorrect responses and a feedback tab to explain why), and a exam mode (you can take each section 3 times) (Multiple choice for each section in one uninterrupted sitting, with percentage scoring and reporting at the end of the last question, and view a stats page that has a bar graph of your scores). Its all the same questions, but I found that even though the questions were all the same, it helped instill those concepts, which in turn helped me to better answer questions on the exam.The book:Rosenthal goes over a wealth of information in the book that covers each section of the exam, a final overview, and tables for the stats section to give a better visual. I hope it goes without saying that the exact questions are not going to show up on the exam. However, there were questions that were very similar to many he went over and while other questions were different, I had adequate enough information from the review that I could still answer them with better judgement and narrow down my answers. Again like the app, the questions and review of answers, helped instill the concepts and information so I could better answer the exam questions. His questions are also set up in the same style as you will see on the exam, which is something I really liked about this book. I wasn't surprised when going into the test and it felt familiar (make no mistake, the exam will be hard, but you will have a good idea how it is structured and the kinds of questions you will see). When taking the exam, if you come across questions that make you go "Um, this wasn't covered even vaguely at all by Rosenthal", then you might have come across some of the 40 experimental questions that are tossed and not scored at the end of the exam. Again his book is a review, so he can't account for everything, but he does thoroughly go over the key concepts that will most likely show up on an exam.How I used the book and app together:I used the app first to test my overall performance and to create a baseline of my scores in each section ( I personally recommend this method so you don't go in blindly studying and feeling like you're getting nowhere). I then started the process of going through the book and reviewing the sections I scored lowest in and worked my way up. After I finished each section, I would go back to the app on study mode and take that section again. I would go through the study mode multiple times too. I had the app on two devices, so I had more opportunities to use the exam mode. You may wonder "well weren't you just remembering your answer each time after you took the practice exam?" Well, yes and no. While I did remember some, going over the review also helped to solidify in my mind why that answer was the correct answer (remember on the exam while some answers are technically correct, the exam is looking for the best correct answer). I also studied for about a month, but had good solid studying for a week before the exam.Things to take into consideration:There are going to be different factors as to how well you do on the NCE (and other exams) though not limited to this list:1. For myself, my graduate program yields the highest passing rate on the NCE for its graduates in my state (so how well your program has done in your education, and how well you learned/retained info could affect your score)2. How well you study3. The length of time you prepare before the examWell that all I have to say, best of luck on your exams!

The information itself is fine, even if there are some cringe-worthy passages. I'm not a fan of Rosenthal's attempts to be chummy -- it often comes off as condescending. My real issue is the binding. My book has essentially fallen apart after light use. And of course I didn't find out that I got a bad copy until 4 months after I bought it (it sat on my bookshelf a long time before I started reading through it). Each of the lines on the spine are where it has come apart from simply being opened. I haven't yet read through the whole book so I'll be interested to see what the binding looks like once I get farther through the book. I'm so mad because this book is expensive and I'm currently studying for the CPCE. This book has to hold up for when I study for the NCE and it's not even holding up during the first read through. This is the worst Routledge book I've ever bought.

This is a massive book an not one to use as a cram session. The purple book was the only thing I used an his app an I passed. As I was taking the test I felt like I had seen multiple of the questions before. I enjoyed that I could test myself an learn more about the wrong answers at the same time. Buy it!

I passed the NCE without issue; receiving a score in the second positive standard deviation. Need some more material on ethical issues and the right procedure or a flow cart. In addition there is almost not discussion of feminine issues both had several questions on my test. i would recommend this book to anyone completing their comps or studying for the NCE.

Well written and easy to comprehend and great study material.However, I just took the NCE and 90% of this book was irrelevant... not on the exam.Hint... study statistics and be able to apply.

This translation of the Bhagavad-Gita reveals that the teachings of the Gita are not the teachings of a particular religion, but of a purely non-sectarian spiritual science. It is a guide for living, and revelation of the nature of the universe, the soul, and most importantly the soul’s relationship with the Supreme Soul, as Dr. Schweig states in his introduction: “…..Indeed, this divine intimacy is revealed in the form of a dialogue that takes the soul on an inward journey culminating in the ultimate state of yoga, in which souls unite with the heart of God.”There are many translations of this 5,000 year old Sanskrit text and many of them have been edited down, or not translated literally, and I have found that those translations leave Krishna’s teachings a bit murky, but, Dr. Schweig’s translation is a literal translation from the original Sanskrit, thoroughly poetic, and clearly remains true to the original message of the Gita in every chapter, verse and word.

Having been a student of the Bhagavad Gita for many years now, I have read several translations and commentaries, both academic and traditional. Dr. Schweig's has struck me as deeply illuminating. While a work of rigorous scholarship it remains philosophically engaging and eminently readable. It stands out to me for its keen awareness of Krishna's original intent. Dr. Schweig expertly brings out the layers of sanskrit poetry and meaning, condensed into this ancient dialogue, unlike any other translator. I especially recommend that every reader pay close attention to his Textual Illuminations section that upon first reading, many years ago, moved me to tears. I now carry his translation with me on my kindle everywhere I travel.

Good teachers simplify the teachings so that the student can easily grasp the sacred teachings. This author does that. We were fortunate enough to have him visit our school and teach us for two days. He was able to lead us through the verses, translation and philosophy with rhythm, grace, knowledge and devotion. He was able to apply what Krishna was teaching Arjuna to conflicts we could battle today - present! Highly recommend this author and can't wait for his next translation to be published of another classical text that he could be working on.....

As a professor of religion, I have read many versions of the Gita and have assigned several of them to my classes. This translation is by far the best. I first read this translation while on a houseboat on the Keralan backwaters with the sounds of jungle temples floating across the waters, but rereading it several times hasn't dampened my initial love of the text. The translation is always accessible, yet includes the key Hindu terms with excellent concise notes that help introductory students understand the text at a deeper level, or at least understand that there are layers of meaning playing out through the text. The critical essays are also excellent. While there are some translations that are more explanatory or conversational, this translation carries the sense of gravity, inquiry and the sublime that is at the heart of the Bhagavad Gita. The critical essays are also excellent.

In addition to an excellent translation, Schweig offers some very helpful tools for fully and fruitfully entering the text including a unique introduction, a dramatis personae, a chronological list of appellations for Lord Krishna and Arjuna, literary essays, an expansive bibliography and more. If you are new to the Bhagavad Gita or a lifelong student, there is something for you in Dr. Schweig's latest offering.

Let me start by saying this is the first full version of the Bhagavad Gita that I've ever read, so I can't make any comparisons to other translations. I have read many quotes from the text, but this is the first time I've read the whole Gita beginning to end.That being said, this translation & brief commentary by Graham Schweig is phenomenal!I liken reading the Bhagavad Gita to reading Shakespeare - the text is rich with meaning, though it may be tough to grasp without extra insight. Schweig does a great job of providing a little bit of guidance while you let the text speak for itself. The final appendix, titled "On This Translation", explains Schweig's means of translating the ancient text & I highly appreciate how he did everything he could to maintain the text's integrity & complexity when presenting it in English.Having studied & practiced many of yoga's core concepts, reading the Gita is a natural extension of delving deeper into the world of yoga. The Gita adds a much richer concept of what yoga is, compared to just reading the Yoga Sutras.Whether you've had an introduction to yoga or not, Schweig does a wonderful job making the Gita understandable - and you'll likely be even more curious about yoga afterward! I can easily see myself reading & referring to this translation for many decadesNote: The Gita is a beautiful book for folks of all faiths to read, whether they consider themselves yogis or not. If you have devoted yourself to a particular religion or faith, keep an open mind when you read this book. Krishna, who is the highest God in the Hindu religion, can easily be seen as the God you have chosen to worship. Each religion has their own version of "the highest power", but more often than not, they are preaching the same message: love one another & leave the Earth better than you found it.

This is by far one of the best editions of the Gita that I have ever read. Schweig's translation is a timeless masterpiece that will touch the hearts of many for years to come.

She faces these challenges as anyone else would; fearful, denying, and hopeless. And yet, she perseveres; continually fighting to enable herself to do what she loves most.

I love her show, so it was nice to learn about Diane Rehm's life and what brought her to where she is today.What I didn't like about the book was how she wrote it -- as a journalist would, with objectivity, and just stating the facts. While she shares intimate details, I never felt connected to her. The writing didn't evoke me to feel what she felt in that moment. Maybe that was because she didn't want to relive her experiences to an even greater degree when she was writing it.Regardless, I'm happy I read it but I don't think I will reread it.

I felt as if I was sitting and chatting with Diane. I am a big fan - and this book just increased my admiration for the role she plays on PBS. Her show is one of the very best on the air, on any radio network.
