The book opens with trying to pin down the beginning of the NYC smallpox outbreak at the turn of the 20th Century. It ascribes one of the early documented cases to Madeline Lyon a 12yo girl diagnosed on 11/27/1900 the Tuesday before Thanksgiving of that year.Over the centuries, smallpox was considered to be the deadliest contagious disease in the world with some 300 million deaths through the 20th century and an average mortality rate of 25-30%, but which could vary from a mere 10% to a staggering 60% depending on the strain involved. This struggle for a prevention or cure also turned out to be one of the first and one of the most important struggles for civil liberties regarding the fight against mandatory vaccination for the good of the populace as a whole, similar to the feelings some have about childhood vaccines today. Around the turn of the 20th Century and even somewhat later the disease was thought to be brought on by outsiders and predominantly male Negroes. And it is true that Blacks and males suffered in disproportionate degrees, but it was due primarily to their proximate living conditions in labor camps of the day and not due to race or gender. Yet, as it typical, society always needs someone to blame.Even though Edward Jenner discovered a vaccine to prevent smallpox by using the cowpox virus [the word vaccine comes from the Latin word vaccina referring to bovines] it wasn't officially eradicated until 1980, with the last documented case of young Somali girl on 10/31/1977.Smallpox was the disease upon which the field of immunology was founded, and helped spur the discovery of two important medical developments; the first being freeze dried vaccines which allowed their potency to last much longer and the second being the bi-bifurcated needle which allowed 4X as many people to be vaccinated with the same amount of innoculant.The novel aspect of the story is well told in the discussion of various epidemic outbreaks and how the medical and political teams worked together and against each other with each trying to maintain their respective fiefdoms. It is a great read for any person interested in medical history and scientific sleuthing.

C'mon Penguin, spring for an editor! The book covers important material but is so repetitive and disorganized it's practically unreadable. Too bad.

I had to read this book for a class and it was surprisingly interesting. Definitely puts the smallpox epidemic into the context of it's time.

This is about the conflicts in the history of immunization and it still goes on. The author did a great job with the research and writing.

This book was recommended to me by a niece. It is an interesting read. Never realized that smallpox was so rampant in the United States. Recommend to anyone interested in this type of history.

I really felt like this was more of a history of the vaccination movement rather than a history of small pox. It was interesting to read about how many people were more afraid of the vaccination than small pox. I also had no idea the amount of force that was used to vaccinate people at that time. It was rather shocking, and yet it really was necessary to protect people from themselves.I only gave the book three stars, because I really felt like the author kept repeating himself, especially in the first half of the book. It was a real slog to get through, but it was well worth it. I learned a lot.(

Although the chapters are arranged by collector, they fall neatly into categories reflecting those collectors' specific areas of interest, such as baseball cards, equipment, uniforms, advertisements, "pin-backs," autographs, and stadium mementos. Many of the story lines are explicit, such as baseball's evolution since the mid-1800s, or the game's strong association with pop culture. Other story lines are less obvious but just as telling, such as baseball's (and society's) more careless tolerance of pain: nineteenth-century baseball played without helmets, rules that allowed teams to record outs by hitting the runner with the baseball (known as soaking), and mitts so unpadded as to pass for driving gloves. And there are nice little touches, like the close-up photos of nine World Series rings, or the sepia image of a touring, 1888-89 American baseball team standing at various points atop the Sphinx. I owned this book years ago when it was new and I lent it to so many folks, eventually it didn't get returned to me. So, I bought another copy (used) of the same thing. Now it is a bit dated but still has good basic "what to see/where to go" info. Not so sure I totally agree with what the author considers a day trip. Book is a very good buy for the money. I will keep mine in my guest room for visitors to use.

Nice gift - for friend moving to NC - loved it.

The book is written decently but I WAS NOT expecting the content.I was drawn in by the reviews and the book summary but what I thought might be another "Girl on the Train" was actually a pretty messed up story. The book includes abuse of women, including intended abuse on a handicapped girl. It's DARK to say the least.To make it worse, the ending was probably the most anticlimactic thing I've ever read... my response was "That was it?"If you're into sadistic books, abuse on women, abuse of handicapped, and are cool with some nightmares, this ones for you!

Page 81. That's how far I read before this book delivered an iota of interesting content. I read beyond that, wanting to believe it was finally going to get better, and I was sorely disappointed. The front and inside cover are littered with raving reviews. Either these people were paid for their glowing comments or they are just as shallow and unintelligent as this story. WOW. It is REALLY bad. I will confess I did not finish it- after being already frustrated 100 pages into the book , I decided to read the amazon reviews and it was just as I expected. The book is predictable and not worth the time. My apologies to the author- as I hate to criticize anyone's hard work and try to find something good in every book I read. This one I could not, perhaps it is just not 'my cup of tea' - but I had to put it down,

I was thrilled to buy this book after reading a sample as I enjoy domestic suspense, but I couldn't get past the 20% mark, if I even got that far. Reading this book is an exercise in sadism, like bathing your psyche in razor blades just for fun. Maybe some readers are into that, but I'm not. If you want a good domestic thriller, skip this filth and read "Big Little Lies" or "Before I Go to Sleep" instead. Far superior plot and writing, and without the sadism.

Another thriller that had me from the very beginning. This was one of the best books that I have read in years. I quickly recommended it to several of my friends who enjoy good fiction.

This book was fairly predictable from the first page. And, I found it impossible to believe that in today's world, this woman wouldn't have been able to stand up for herself. Just too weak a premise to be an enjoyable read.

Damn! This lady can write!! I read psychological thrillers a lot~it's my favorite genre~~~~but this one tops anything I've read in quite a while. I think the content might be too "strong" for some, but being so well written might make it more palatable for those offended by the content. I am beginning to read her second novel, "The Breakdown". I hope she continues gushing out words, stories, and characters as creative as those in  "Behind Closed Doors".From one who has experienced a similar situation, I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

This story had so many holes in it it should of been called " Behind Swiss Cheese " ..The wife had many opportunities to escape but the author made up countless excuses for her, none of them logical..boring, predictable and poorly written..

They are the epitome of PERFECTION. Perfect wife, perfect husband, perfect house, perfect job. Just PERFECT EVERYTHING, right??!! Ooooh no, so many things aren’t as we see them and what would that may be would you ask? Well that’s for me to know and for you to find out. Trust me is sooo good. One thing I will let you know is that I have NEVER EVER hated a character as much as I hate Jack Angel. The man is a sadistic psychopath. A wolf wearing sheeps clothing. So go see how this man can make your skin scrawled!!! “It’s a shame he’s such a sadistic bastard, because he has wonderful manners”.

They really should have followed a single character. The book was too short to have any proper development with any of the three main characters and important/interesting events went by too quickly. I would've preferred the book followed Bakari, as the 'bait and switch' between what I thought was the main character to a surprising developed side character was great. Despite this, all the characters were over-equipped to handle each situation they were in and it really hurt any tension this book could've had. Roland had zero character development and was insufferable throughout the whole book, only to get his way and move into power without learning anything to damper his self entitlement. Alli is your basic 'all strong female leads can only be knife wielding rogues' and it doesn't go much farther than that. Bakari just kinda has things happen to him, with an added bonus of "a friend dies because reasons" that adds nothing to the story.What this book did have was a great world. I kept reading on to learn more about the mysterious kingdom and the world beyond, it's just a shame we are never allowed to explore it. The book seems hellbent on rushing you through everything as fast as possible. I can't really see myself buying the next book.

I've been enthralled with dragons since I was a child. But I was older I read Harry Potter to my daughter. This book filled the void of magic and Dragons that I had been looking for.

This well written story has some very interesting characters. Of course good over evil is involved but the good guys don't know who or what the bad guys are up to.It's time to look back to the histories of ALL the people.This is a great book for teens and older. I'm older and I enjoyed the plot very much. It's well written too.

Mike Shelton has made a living as a regular person in a good life work, family church and writing have all been a good part of his life lucky for the reader he love for writing has grown as life has progressed for him and his family. The Dragon Orb is so well written that I feel like I am living the adventure that skill as a writer is rare I am glad he has found the ability to use and share it with us. The character development grows and continues to develop all throughout this book the new characters introduced as the story grows and developed continue to improve the adventure I look forward to reading then next books in the series. You will find the investment of time and money reading this book to be well spent.

Lacking any meaningful editing. Poor punctuation, misuse of vocabulary, no grasp of tense and superfluous adjectives. Oftentimes, irrational behavior by the protagonists with no underlying justification. Suitable for middle school use at best, and ill advised for that purpose due to the terrible grammar.

A great adventure story with wizards and dragons. The author takes you on a magical ride through Alaris and the magic barrier. Is it there to protect the people inside or out? You will have to pick-up this roller coaster ride yourself. As for me, I'm going out to fly my dragon.

I was fortunate enough to be one of those who was able to receive a pre-publication ebook of The Dragon Orb. In movies, the producers and directors rely heavily on the "magic" of computer graphics and creative cinematography when we need to be transported out of our world of reality into their world of sometimes impossible. In books, the only tools available to the author are words and their connection to the mind and imagination of the reader. As in his previous books, the author continues to use those tools with mastery as he transports me from my all too logical world of reality into a world where magic exists and dragons fly. His characters are well-developed and believable. Not only are they believable but I find myself becoming one with them as the adventure develops under the authors masterfully developed plot and characters. It truly is amazing to ride on the back of a dragon gazing at the landscape far below as my imagination is drawn by the artfully crafted words to make me a part and citizen of the realm. Thanks for a really great trip. As an aside, the cover graphics do a great job of preparing me to be absorbed into the world which the cover graphics have already portrayed in graphical short-hand.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, both this one and the continuation in books 2 and 3. There are a couple very mild similarities to the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini, but nothing that really takes away from either series. I am assuming the copy I read has since been edited, based on one review that claims there was misuse of grammar and tense, as I did not notice anything particularly untoward in that respect.

About the Author

Nicholas Giordano obtained his B.S. at Purdue University and his Ph.D. at Yale University. He has been on the faculty at Purdue since 1979, served as an Assistant Dean of Science from 2000-2003, and is currently the Hubert James Distinguished Professor of Physics. His research interests include electrical conduction, superconductivity, and magnetism in ultra-small metallic structures, along with musical acoustics and the physics of the piano. Ideas for this book grew out of the course on computational physics that he developed and taught in the early 1990s. Professor Giordano earned a Computational Science Education Award from the Department of Energy in 1997, and in 2004 was named Indiana Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. Hisao Nakanishi earned his B.S. from Brown University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. His Ph.D. research concerned scaling and universality in a geometric phase transition called percolation and he has been interested in scale-invariance ever since. During his first postdoctoral work at Cornell he was introduced to the problem of surface critical phenomena such as wetting phase transitions, and later at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he started working on the statistics of diffusion and polymers in earnest. .In 1992 Professor Nakanishi was a part of the team that won a Gordon Bell Prize for the application of parallel computing to a problem in polymer statistics. More recently he has also put on another hat as a developer of a computer-based interactive exercise system which is used by a few thousand students at Purdue each year.

Ok this book is good, it conveys lessons that novice programmers can understand. My only problem with it was that it was my textbook for college where we were instructed to use Matlab on homework problems where this text uses Fortran to show examples. If you know Fortran then go for it, if not, then it would be best to look somewhere else. There are plenty of Computational Physics texts that use different programming languages that one could be familiar with.

A good guide in learning how to apply computational physics to various problems.

It is a great introduction, but some explanations to the topic are unclear or murky

Let me begin by saying that I have read through many books on computational physics and this is by far the one that I prefer. It seems suitable for use in a classroom or for self study. The writing style is clear, almost conversational and new concepts are developed carefully and can be easily understood.The unfortunate part of the book is of course the use of Basic for the examples. I agree with the author that this language, and especially the version used, is suitable and even easy to use for the subject at hand, however it is not an industry standard language.I would much rather see C, C++ or even Python used for the examples. It is not hard to translate from the Basic versions, but many readers of this book will be scientists, but not generally computer scientists. And they may be learning to program as they are using this book. If the examples were written using basic C syntax, the reader would be well on his way to learning not only computational physics, but a widely used language as well.With this light criticism, I really like the book and have not found anything that I would prefer regardless of the programming language used.

This book is straightforward and enjoyable. Takes 'theory' for messy real world problems and makes it practical with rather simple methods.

The book came in better time and better repair than I had expected. Cover and pages near-new, arrived on the first day of the predicted time (like 4 days or something). I would recommend to anyone who's found a good deal through them.

I'm glad I bought this book. I was hesitant at first, while perusing it in the bookstore, because it seemed to be aimed at an audience that is, well, too undergraduate. However the book gets directly to the essence of the algorithms used to carry out simulations: nothing extraneous. Within an hour after sitting down to read a chapter, one can often have the first working code finished. It is through trying simulations, playing with parameters, and seeing what happens that one starts to get a feel for the models which are otherwise just differential equations on paper. The style of exposition is informal and lively. The range of subjects covered is diverse. It presumes the reader is familiar with physics of the models discussed, yet each chapter begins with a short review. The book is organized in a way that permits skipping around, which I like, and I found that the exercises are packed with suggestions and new things to try. All in all it is a very good book for someone who may know next to nothing about a particular physics model and wants to learn it though computer simulation.Since the publisher doesn't include the "search inside" feature, here is a list of chapter headings:First numerical problems. Realistic Projectile Motion. Oscillatory Motion and Chaos. The Solar System. Potentials and Fields. Waves. Random Systems. Statistical Mechanics, Phase Transitions, and the Ising Model. I have found this book to be an outstanding resource for teaching computational physics. As others have noted, the emphasis on this book is generally on the physics with less emphasis on the methods, but enough to usefully reproduce what they have done. I am not sure how it would work as a textbook for the students and, indeed, I have not tried to use it in this way. Certainly, at least in an undergraduate course, it would need to be supplemented by more discussion of numerical methods.
