Kagan's description of the 1805 campaign in Europe was excellent. If you are a newcomer looking to explore Napoleon however I may not suggest this book. This book goes into intricate detail about the political and military patterns of this war. You actually get through almost a third of the 600 pages before the war even begins! All the to-ings and fro-ings of the political leaders are covered through the entire beginning of the book.When you get to the real military stuff a good chunk is devoted to describing Napoleon's war plans and assumptions as well as the Russian and Austrian high command's war plans. A lot of attention is focused on Mack and Archduke Charles and their assumptions and feelings about the war. He covers the strategic and tactical orders of the campaign in great detail. The story is often told through individual regiments rather than whole corps. Before Austerlitz there is a long chapter regarding the Austrian plan for 'victory' as well as Napoleon's plans. When the battle occurs the detail is the same. Other fronts such as Massena and Charles in Italy are covered various chapters.In summary, if you are looking for a good detailed account of the 1805 campaign this is for you. If you are looking for an into you might need something less 'meaty.' Another quick comment, this story is not written through experience of soldiers. It is mainly written through movement of troops and political negotiations.

This is NOT Napoleonic hagiography. If you are interested in a history of the Austerlitz campaign that focuses on the perspective of allied forces as much as, if not more than Napoleon's perspective then I recommend this book. My personal interest in the Napoleonic wars is on the forces opposing Napoleon. Most books on the Napoleonic Wars focus on Napoleon, and those that don't tend to focus on the British. Kagan treats Russia, Austria, and Prussia are treated fairly. Their faults and mistakes are genuinely examined, and their failures are not simply attributed to Napoleon's 'genius.' "The End of the Old Order" is dense and not for the novice student of the War of the Third Coalition, but the serious student who wants as much information as possible should be satisfied. It balances the diplomatic and military history evenly, and the analysis of the battles, in many instances, takes place at the battalion level.

In this volume(and the 3 that will follow) Kagan sets out to write a military/diplomatic history of the Napoleonic period.The first 200 pages give an overview of how the war of the First Coalition came about. Then there are some 100 pages devoted to the french and allied war plans and the rest of the book covers the war itself.This is a work of explanation and interpretation and the focus is on the diplomats and generals who made the important decisions.There is no spotlight on the idiosyncracies of individuals perse ,but only if it is important to explain some decision taken by that person. Likewise the descriptions of battles are explanatory. There is no blood and guts. All in all it is a bit like a game of chess and the best explanatory book i have read about Napoleonic Europe. The author, in contrast to most other books about this time, devotes an equal amount of space to the French and the Allies and is evenhanded in the condemnation or praise he bestows on the belligerents.It is simply not true as an other reviewer has it that this is the old Napoleon as Ogre story all over again.Knowing the author's very rightleaning political views i indeed started reading this book with some trepidation, but was pleasantly suprised that Kagan did'nt let those views cloud his judgement.Repeatedly Kagan stresses that it was'nt Napoleon who wanted this war but Tsar Alexander. Of course you can take exception with the author's interpretation of motives and events but that applies to every thesis. At least Kagan does't parrot every other author and his analysis is based on thorough archival investigation. This is not a book for the novice but if you want to know the ins and outs of Napoleonic Europe, have an analytical bend and value clear and uncluttered prose this is the book for you. Highly recommended. Hats of for Frederick Kagan and counting down to the next volume.

According to Frederick Kagan it was the mistakes made by European nations and not Napoleon's brilliance that lead to France dominating Europe in the first decade of the nineteenth century. First according to Kagan distrust among Britain, Prussia, Austria, and Russia made them form an alliance too late, and in Prussia's case to opt out until the very last moment. Kagan is especially critical of Tsar Alexander I for alienating potential allies by his overly idealistic version of postwar Europe in which both Prussia and Austria would have diminished power in exchange for greater influence of the smaller states in Central Europe. Kagan is also critical of the Austrian leadership for putting too many soldiers in Italy instead of Germany and at General Mack for not retreating from his overextended forces from Ulm. Also Archduke Charles failed to move sufficient forces from Italy to help Mack in Germany. Kagan is especially harsh on Tsar Alexander I for overextending his forces in Italy, around Prussia, and the Balkans, while failing to concentrate them in southern Germany in order to cooperate better with the Austrians. Finally Tsar Alexander I ordered Kutuzov to on the offensive prematurely before the disasterous Austro-Russian defeat at Austerlitz. Although I strongly disagree with Frederick Kagan's personal politics, he does write excellent military history.

About the Author

Maxine Hong Kingston is the daughter of Chinese immigrants who operated a gambling house in the 1940s, when Maxine was born, and then a laundry where Kingston and her brothers and sisters toiled long hours. Kingston graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1962 from the University of California at Berkeley, and, in the same year, married actor Earll Kingston, whom she had met in an English course. The couple has one son, Joseph, who was born in 1963. They were active in antiwar activities in Berkeley, but in 1967 the Kingstons headed for Japan to escape the increasing violence and drugs of the antiwar movement. They settled instead in Hawai‘i, where Kingston took various teaching posts. They returned to California seventeen years later, and Kingston resumed teaching writing at the University of California, Berkeley.While in Hawai‘i, Kingston wrote her first two books. The Woman Warrior, her first book, was published in 1976 and won the National Book Critics Circle Award, making her a literary celebrity at age thirty-six. Her second book, China Men, earned the National Book Award. Still today, both books are widely taught in literature and other classes. Kingston has earned additional awards, including the PEN West Award for Fiction for Tripmaster Monkey, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature, and the National Humanities Medal, which was conferred by President Clinton, as well as the title “Living Treasure of Hawai‘i” bestowed by a Honolulu Buddhist church. Her most recent books include a collection of essays, Hawai‘i One Summer, and latest novel, The Fifth Book of Peace. Kingston is currently Senior Lecturer Emerita at the University of California, Berkeley.

It has a dash of magical realism that I enjoyed and almost seems to let the reader participate in situations as much as observe them.Our book group had a chance to discuss the book with it’s author. She let us know that she had paid readers with certain important viewpoints to preview and comment on the work in progress. She said that it has become more common for publishers to pay for specialist readers since that time. I feel that I have read many books over time that could have benefitted from such contributions.The story rollicks along and looks at situations from multiple viewpoints. I will certainly seek out the author’s work in the future. After all, who doesn’t like an involving story with multiple fascinating characters and situations?

When this story opens, Mercedes Moreno is a budding artist suffering from creative block, due to several factors: Her beloved grandmother has suffered a stroke, and her mother is in San Juan at the grandmother's bedside. As if that wasn't enough, Mercedes has confusing feelings for her best friend. All of this has kept Mercedes from being able to express herself through her art, although she has tried many times.Inspiration comes in the form of a new neighbor, who introduces Mercedes to a group of artists at the mysterious Red Mangrove Estate, an old, formerly abandoned building near her home. Mercedes learns that she can be creative at the Estate in ways she never has before. However, the rules of the Estate are that she cannot take anything off the premises.The choices Mercedes must make -- about her creativity, her family, her best friend, and the direction of her life -- are not easily resolved, and that is what makes this tale such a realistic portrait of self-discovery.I loved the descriptions, the imagery, the character development, and particularly the relationships between the characters (Mercedes and her sister, her mother, her best friend, and her grandmother). A great read for young adults, and for all ages!

She's waiting for some sort of inspiration to continue her artwork. And most importantly, she's waiting for some kind of resolution on her feelings for her best friend. As close as they are, could Victoria ever think of Mercedes as anything but a friend?Meanwhile, a new neighbor introduces Mercedes to a different world filled with other artists. It's here that Mercedes begins to unravel some of her quandries.Karcz creates both compelling storylines and characters, realistic and engaging. Mercedes Moreno is both unique, yet a person to whom all of us can relate and cheer for.

Beautifully and engagingly written, The Gallery of Unfinished Girls moves both quickly and slowly at the same time, and I think this has something to do with the surreal elements that make this novel so difficult to put down. It's exciting and tender, funny and heartbreaking, and every other perfect paradox you could ever really imagine.I'm not a big YA reader, so in all honesty, I don't know how this book fits into the overall genre. But, as I read, I kept thinking to myself: this is not YA - its thematic elements are refreshingly, painfully, and honestly adult, but placed in a high school environment. It speaks to questions of identity and "why the heck am I here and what am I 'supposed' to do vs what I 'want" to do," which as an almost 30 year old reader...well, let's just say that it hits home...in a very good, very challenging, and very cathartic way. It's an amazing read...please don't miss this one.

I loved this powerful, smart young adult novel. Great for readers 14+.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book--could not put it down! As interesting as the plot is, the artistry of the language is what I loved most. I look forward to reading more from this author.

If you want a book with some teeth in it’s fight scenes, depth in its characters, and a roller-coaster ride of plot development so intense you forget to make dinner-this is your book. I give this book five out of five stars for living up to its well deserved acclaim, taking me back to ancient Rome, making me girl crush on some amazing strong female characters, and throw up my hands and cheer like my team just won the super bowl at a surprise plot twist.What I loved:1) The fight scenes, it takes talent to write scenes this good and Quinn dishes out combat of both the physical and verbal variety. There were several gladiator scenes, each unique, and served to push the story forward and sometimes pull out unique details about different characters. I really liked the banquet/orgy/catfight between Thea and Lady Lepida, It was a rare sequence I found fiercely intense. I loved hating bad girl Lepida, she added all kinds of fun crazy.2) The relationships, wound the books plot together and breathed life into a fantastic cast of characters. The tension and connection displayed between families, friends, and lovers was marvelous. The romance between Thea and Arius was built in a few simple scenes, but it was true to life and unique. It was wonderful to see how their connection carried through the rest of the book.3) The environment was drawn well. The beauty as well as the ugly underbelly of ancient Rome was portrayed masterfully. The details of this historical place and culture are used in the right amounts and never became gratuitous or irrelevant to the action in the story.*Content disclaimers for squeamish or under age readers: The violence is graphic but appropriate for the era and theme of the book. The sexual content is discussed more than it is portrayed, and what is shown is mild and tastefully done.

I didn't think I would like this book, but I thought I would give it a try. And I am glad that I did.I liked the background of Ancient Rome. I thought that the historical context of the book was fascinating and realistic. The cruelty of the dictators, the lives of the slaves, the role of gladiators, the gore and barbarity of the Coliseum, the characteristics of the general public and other parts of the story I found most educational and, at times, horrible..The characters were also well developed. There was one cruel, horrible, and egocentric female character in the book that I wanted so badly to jump into the book and tell her off.Overall, I enjoyed the book and I do recommend it.

This book wasn’t what I was expecting at all. It was much darker and sad that I thought it would be. From the opening line, it became clear that this wasn’t going to be a happy tale…..cutting and ‘bleeding’ one’s self is hardly the beginning of a happily ever after romance, which was what I was expecting when I picked up the book.But I kept reading. I wasn’t sure what to think or expect after the first chapter but I was willing to give it a fair shot. I didn’t really like any of the characters….Thea was so guarded that I never warmed to her even in the end. Lepida was a vengeful bitch but as the villain that’s the be expected. The Barbarian was too dark and also too guarded to really see him as a ‘hero’ or ‘romantic’ interest. I mean I didn’t like ANY of the characters…..but still I kept reading.So that said, you would think that I would give this star a low rating right? Wrong. Oddly enough while I wasn’t especially attached to the characters and didn’t especially ‘like’ the story…..I was glued to the pages for one reason…..it was different.It wasn’t the same old cliche hero and heroine. I liked that Quinn went with the darker side of Roman culture and society instead of the easy traditional route. I felt like Quinn was true to the period and true to the brutal and often violent, ancient world.Not to mention the story was so twisted and just dark and wrong, that I couldn’t help but keep reading. I had to know how things were going to resolve for the characters in the end.Even now I can’t say that I really liked this book…..the characters and the subject matter were dark and not really ‘likable’ or even ‘relate-able’ but for some reason I just could not put it down….I had to know what happened and how things were going to wrap up. This was a book that just took hold somehow.So will I read the other books in the series? Yes I most definitely would. I think Quinn has a unique way of story telling…..and any one who can keep me reading when there is really nothing to like, has earned my readership!

I love this series, If you are just looking at it for the first time you may want to start with Daughters of Rome, but this was the one that I actually read first and it stands on its own just fine. The author is able to spin history, fiction and a hybrid of both into an incredible tapestry of a series, be sure to read the author's note at the end, you may be surprised at what is true and what is not! The two main female characters of this book are so incredibly different from each other, I despise one and adore the other but they are both wonderfully put together. And the love story really is wonderful, although heart wrenching at sometimes. This is a book (and series) that I read over and over and never tire of. I can honestly and wholeheartedly recommend it to any fan of historical fiction.
