I haven't read anything by Scott Turow in a long, long time - in fact, I'm not sure I've read anything of his since/other than "Presumed Innocent," which was terrific. My wife has read more of his books than I, and she's consistently said I should read one or another of them.Well, I took her up on the offer and just finished "Identical." I've read lots of reviews that say it's not his best, and so on, and perhaps that's true. However, it's a great read that provides more than just a good murder mystery - though it provides that as well. He offers up some thoughts on identity, love, families and more, but never in a heavy-handed way (compare this to, say, "Big Brother" by Lionel Shriver - one of the worst books I've read this year, or possibly ever). Instead, these thoughts are woven into the plot so that they're part of the book rather than a separate lecture. His characters are generally believable, at least through most of the book (more on that in a bit), and at a minimum they're intelligent and individuals. The dialogue is genuine, as are the setting and the times. The book does, however, fall down at the end. (I don't think you need a spoiler alert, but if you're hyper-sensitive about that sort of thing, you may want to stop now.) In what appears to be an effort to make the characters as close as possible to those in the legend of Castor and Pollux, he has them behaving, well, weirdly and doing things that just don't ring true, mostly in the last third or quarter of the book. This problem is aggravated by the number of weird behaviors involved; too many things seem to happen at the end, and too many of them fall into this weird category, and more than disbelief is suspended - unfortunately, credibility is, too.Still, a very enjoyable and moderately thought-provoking read, and worth the time and money.

This turned out to be one of the best books I have ever read. In the beginning I had a tough time keeping the characters straight(I am 82 ys old) but once I did I hated putting the book down. It is a long book with a lot of twists and turns and the surprises keep coming right up to the very end. A lot of times by the end of one of the long books I can't wait to be finished. Not this one!! I dreaded the end of it but was completel happy with his tying up all the loose ends. Great Book! Will read it again, I am sure.

Perhaps another draft was needed. This story seems to have been designed around forensic science, technology and family relationships all pivoting around DNA. The lengthy and numerous explications of DNA examination, fingerprinting and the complications of those were just too much in the weeds of those subjects. The story was very confusing as identities and the trappings of identities were exchanged, back and forth, then back again. It just seemed like a completely implausible gimmick, without point. The introduction of a love interest at almost the very end was just odd. There was no character that engendered much interest or sympathy. Reading it has just been a slog through a dull book and this reader kept wondering: what is the point of this? This reading and two other previously favorite mystery genre writers - Sara Paretsky and Sue Grafton - have all written books over most recent years that have been very disappointing to this eager reader. I don't know who is coming along to take their place, but Turow, Paretsky and Grafton seem to have lost their mojo and it makes me sad.

A good forensic story. Turow, one of the two or the best American crime writers, does a fairly good job exposing us to advanced DNA work using, appropriately, two identical twins that are supposed to have the same DNA. Apparently not 100% the same and I did know this before reading this book.I found, however, the sections dealing with a lesbian couple rather unnecessary, boring and quite predictable. I wonder why this stuff was included - the two ladies have nothing to contribute to the main story. It ends on comical note.Tim, the fit oldster, should be a role model for me (I am 79 now). Turow's description of his aging but still working body is kind of encouraging.Interesting similarity to Jeffrey Archer's fiction: an incest. Archer, I think, uses it two stories and Turow uses it here as well.Turow created here something similar to classic Greek tragedies. This is, however, 2013 AD not 500 BC. The women, however are the strongest players here, as they were back then.I liked Grisham's last opus much better but Turow is not that bad. I may buy a few books I missed after his first one or two.Recommended but with reservations.

I read the whole book. I ending up taking it out of the Library. It was really well written. I disagreed with many of the reviews. I didn't find that there were too many characters as one reviewers said, also the characters were well developed. I particularly found interesting the 81 year old former homicide detective, and the Former FBI agent. They carried the story. Also interesting was the brother of the victim, Hal, who came on as a boarish oaf at the beginning of the book, and at the end of the book was a sympathetic character. The weak point in the book were the two twins. There character and development was the books weak point. They were the focus of the story, but both were totally uninteresting. Also the political aspect of the book went nowhere. The book was based on a story from Greek Mythology which I wasn't familiar with, The finger prints on the cover is misleading. There are no real surprises in this book, but its good reading.
