We took a short family vacation this summer, traveling from Kyiv via Belarus to these two Baltic cities. We brought along a Kindle copy of the Lonely Planet guide.It was an excellent reference as far as telling us what to do in the cities. We climbed to the top of the hill with three crosses and overlooked the city of Vilnius. We learned a bit of the history, crossing the Vila River – a big stream, actually – after which the city is named. The city maps were really useful.The utility of such books changes over time. Restaurants come and go, and more and more of us look for lodgings via the Internet. But the attractions of the cities remain.I especially appreciated two recommendations in Riga. The first was the beach at Jurmala, with instructions of how to get there by train. The second was the recommendation that we ride the retro tramway. It is a beautifully restored car, probably a century old, that runs on the same tracks and timetable as the number eleven trolley. Well worth the experience.
This book came in very handy on our travels! It was a great way to plan ahead part of our tip. We went to Latvia and Estonia with this as our guide :) I would recommend checking out visitor centers for additional information but this was great for some pre-planning!
Excellent reference book. Includes Helsinki and Kaliningrad which are terrific inclusions! Easy to reference eating, sleeping and visiting ideas. Good maps of areas in the chapter. Nice pictures, not overdone.
This headline was a good piece of advice I read in another book, and so I did buy a good guide. It really helped during our trip to the Baltic region. It is well organized and made my planning much easier.The only negative I have is that in Estonia you absolutely need an IDP (International Driving Permit) to rent a car if you live in America. The book erroneously states that it is not necessary. You do need one! So get an IDP, if you plan on driving.
Had a great time in Estonia, and I even took the recommended weekend retreat to Helsinki from there that it suggested. No regrets! It even talked about big local festivals so I knew which towns to avoid and when since I hate huge crowds.
Good introduction to the Baltic’s - I tend to read these guides prior to a trip then bookmark all the venues and make hotel reservations on trip advisor.
We learn the histories of countries before we go, we get ideas for hostels, we have the basic dictionary of phrases, we know the currencies, we learn the signs for men's rooms and ladies' rooms....we never travel without a Lonely Planet guide.
Good travel size. Good read.
