Review
Entertainment Weekly "Must List"“[Nashawaty] reveals in his comprehensive history just how the flick’s legendary creators scored such a perfect game.â€â€•Entertainment Weekly“A narrative that explores the seismic shifts in comedy during the ’60s and ’70s that led to Caddyshack… the story of a movie that prominently features an animatronic gopher is surprisingly deep and engrossing.â€â€•A.V. Club“More fun to read than the movie was to watch… [a] scene-stealing book.â€â€•Washington Post“The book about the movie is better than the movie… an astute and lively study of '70s comedy that zeroes in on a film considered a failure upon its 1980 release… a sterling example of how to construct the story behind the story… Caddyshack fans will delight in the book's on-set details, including the technical challenges posed by that animatronic gopher. For the rest of us, this is ground-level look at the birth of a scene.â€â€• Dallas Morning News“Caddyshack unleashes revelations about one of the most quirky and surreal film productions and the stars who made this movie one of the most beloved of all time.â€â€• Parade“You don’t have to be a fan of the 1980 comedy “Caddyshack†to enjoy the terrific new book about the movie by Entertainment Weekly film critic Chris Nashawaty... Nashawaty also tells the broader story of how a new generation of comic actors and writers took over movies and TV during the 1970s and 1980s... Caddyshack captures a long-vanished era in movies, as well as showing us how one popular film of that period came together.â€â€• CT Post"Chris Nashawaty doesn't settle for mere behind-the-scenes gossip or trivia. He tells a novelesque story full of gigantic characters―some of whom happen to have famous names―that shows us where comedy comes from and how classic movies are made, usually unbeknownst to the people making them. Wonderfully written and impeccably researched, Caddyshack is a treat for fans of the movie or anyone who cares about comedy and its flawed practitioners." ― Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of Seinfeldia“An incisive, definitive portrait of an epoch in the evolution of comedy - told through the improbable saga of the making of a beloved, oddball classic - that solves one of the enduring mysteries of the movie business: How in the name of Bushwood’s gopher did this fractured fairytale ever come together?â€â€• Mark Frost, Co-creator of Twin Peaks, author of The Match: The Day the Game of Golf Changed Forever andThe Greatest Game Ever Played: Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet, and the Birth of Modern Golf“I opened this book thinking, 'Why Caddyshack?' I closed it completely exhilarated by the way it answers that question. This is a tough, sharp history of comedy and competitiveness, of rising stars and brilliant upstarts. Of difficult egos, awful behavior, fragile friendships, bursts of inspiration, and blizzards of cocaine―told by the survivors and shaped by Chris Nashawaty's welcome insight and perspective.â€â€• Mark Harris, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures at a Revolution and Five Came Back“Funny? Of course. But Chris Nashawaty's book is also a vivid, surprisingly poignant history of a generation that revolutionized American comedy. Well, and of drugs. Lots of drugs.â€â€• Chris Smith, author of The Daily Show (the Book)“Chris Nashawaty has written a ridiculously funny book that is also tragic, sweet, profane and profoundly entertaining. It's full of sex, drugs and gopher holes, of course. But Nashawaty also tells, through Caddyshack, the origin story of modern comedy. The result is a richly reported book as rollicking and quotable as the film at it honors.â€â€• Steve Rushin, writer for Sports Illustrated and author of Sting-Ray Afternoons"Caddyshack is an American classic born out of both design and happy, slacker accident. The story behind its making is in a way as fascinating and hilarious as the movie itself. This made me love the movie more. And I didn't think that was possible." ―Will Leitch, author of Are We Winning? and God Save the Fan, founder of Deadspin."An everything-you-ever-wanted-to-know-about look at a cult movie whose reputation has grown in the four decades since its initial release. Nashawaty provides an eye-opening pleasure for Caddyshack fans."― Kirkus“In Nashawaty’s hilarious depiction, the production is shown to have been utter chaos, albeit with some creative genius tossed in... [Caddyshack] provides both an entertaining showbiz chronicle and, by the conclusion, an unexpectedly moving tribute to Kenney’s short life and lasting comic legacy.â€â€• Publishers Weekly“Nashawaty’s prose is lively, and his exhaustive research is bolstered by interviews with many of the film’s principle players, including the famously elusive Murray. A wonderful celebration of a passionately loved film.â€â€• Booklist

I pre-ordered this book months ago and devoured it when it arrived Tuesday. Caddyshack’s the first “adult†comedy I remember going to the theater to see—maybe not the best pick for an eleven year old. A family friend and her younger brother took me to a raucous, packed Friday evening show. I loved it, everyone loved. It played well here in the Midwest and later when it would come on cable I’d watch it again and again.Which is why it’s so surprising that it got such a tepid response at first. I hadn’t how it related to the sea change that came from Animal House, or how it fit next to the other big comedy blockbusters of that year The Blues Brothers and Airplane! Nashawaty does an amazing job providing context. He spends solid time looking at the evolution of the filmmakers from Harvard Lampoon to National Lampoon to Second City to SNL. When we get to the production of the movie proper he provides an amazing behind the scenes with the crew, cast, and hangers on.But he smartly tempers that with his discussion of the rivalries, painful relationships, and excesses of the production. He gives us a keen sense of emotions and human cost involved, spending a good deal of time talking about the tragedy of Doug Kenney. The book’s smartly structured, a pleasure to read, and the author has great descriptions and excellent turns of phrase. A great read.
The Making of a Loveable Movie! Starting at Harvard then the National Lampoon then Animal House and finally Caddyshack how a small group of people, many SNL castmembers and original castmembers, make an average movie that is immortalized forever to those who laughed our way through the viewing. Great stories of Chevy Chase looking at it from a different perspective now. And Bill Murray shows his true improvisation capabilities. Pond or Pool per Chevy Chase in a totally improvised scene. How did Rodney Dangerfield steal the show and Harold Ramis as a neophyte director who early and in editing almost ruined the movie? But really this book is about Doug Kenney. Don't know who he is? Well look him up. And if you ever need to lead a band in to a deadend alley, he's your guy.
Stellar piece on one of the most iconic comedies of all time. Going into reading of this book, I knew very little of the breadth of chaos that went into creating this film. Was sad to read about Doug Kenney’s spiral, and shocked to realize I’ve been to a specific location that factors heavily in his zany life.I wish there were as comprehensive books as this about my *all* my favorite films from growing up. The author really painted a fantastic portrait of what it would have been like to be caught up in the heyday of Hollywood’s rebirth in the 70’s and 80’s.
The author has done a fantastic job of guiding the reader through a web of interconnected personalities, circumstances and events with uncommon clarity and exceptional style and pacing, which results in a book that is much richer than its title/topic suggests. A revealing, penetrating, and always entertaining description of how bright, creative personalities working in multiple media shaped and were shaped by the culture in the late 70s. This book about comedy is a deceptively serious achievement and success.
I wrote that headline because that's not common for me. Maybe in a few days, but finishing it on the same day is rare. My attention span isn't the greatest so I'm often reading a few things and watching a few movies and tv programs at the same time. But I read this all without anything else interfering.Anyway, I found it all very interesting. The tragic story of Doug Kenney, Harold Ramis's directorial debut and the incredible amount of improv that was involved (mostly for the better), National Lampoon, SNL and SCTV background, the stories of the actors involved, the incredible amount of editing necessary, etc. etc. What was meant to be the main story line was also very surprising. I'll just say that a love triangle with the woman at the middle of it having a goofy accent (that isn't funny, just annoying) is a recipe for disaster. Luckily everyone recognized where the strengths of the material were and it's stood the test of time. The only thing that bothered me (but probably wouldn't bother most people) is the writer putting down comedy before that era, and even in that era that didn't involve certain groups. But that's just a minor gripe. So I recommend the book highly for anyone who is a fan of the movie.
Though Caddyshack is revered as a golf movie, there’s little actual mention of golf in this book about the making of the film. Rather, the book delves into the history of the people behind the film, from their Harvard Lampoon roots to the founding of The National Lampoon and the tremendous success of the first film from the Lampoon people, “Animal Houseâ€.More than just a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, this book chronicles a time of great social change, holding great appeal even beyond just the interest in the film itself. That being said, the backstory and the behind-the-scenes looks at the personalities involved in the movie will only bolster the interest of Caddyshack fans.
Interesting behind the scene story of the making of the iconic film, Caddyshack. Well written with interesting mini-bios of Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Harold Ramos, and Doug Kenney among others. Lots of cocaine fueled the making of the movie. I got the sense that I’d read some of the stories that comprise the book elsewhere, but I still enjoyed it. Recommended.
This is a well-researched and enjoyable read taking the reader behind the scenes. Between the drugs and egos, it is a wonder the movie ever got made. There were several parts of the movie that seemed "out of place" and after reading the book, I now know why and how they occurred. If you are a fan of Caddyshack, I highly recommend this book for an in-depth view of the people in front of the camera and those behind it. Fascinating history of how the main players came to prominence and the interactions that came directly from those early days in their careers.
