I'm looking to add a CNC machine to my woodshop. When adding any new tool to the shop you have to be able to justify the cost. This book gave me a better understanding of the CNC process. I'm now confident that I can get consistent, quality results out of a Shapeoko or any other "DIY" CNC machine at a justifiable price.Being new to CNC, one of the biggest worries is how to easily transfer my vision into a finished product. This book will give you a better understanding of that process.
I assembled a ShapeOko 3 earlier this year and immediately consumed everything I could find in all the forums and YouTube channels, carving 2.5 and 3D objects in woods, plastics, and aluminum. I wish I had had this book getting started. It is a quick, enjoyable read but packs a lot of great info in one place.
It gives some really good information for the beginner (me) but really needs a content editor. Having a link DOWNLOAD-LINK-TBD shows that it never went through a final edit. Seeing how this was a very long time in coming, I would think the editing should have been much better. This is the paper edition.
Edward Ford has been there and done that and it shows! He shares his insights as well as his hard learned lessons in this book. CNC isn't hard to learn, but it is foreign as a new experience. If you are new to CNC, do yourself a favor, get this book, find somewhere comfortable, and enjoy the read! Lots of info presented well! Want to take it in faster, read it out loud! I wish I had found it earlier in my CNC experience.
Not really a getting started, so much as BEFORE getting started sort of book.Great in terms of giving terminology, not so great in helping to actually get started. Based on the title, i thought there'd be more than one project. The project was a good starting point to learn what's what, but for the money, too much of the book was spent in acknowledgements and not enough in exercises or drills.
The book has many technical errors. The author refers to all CNC bits as end mills. Then he goes on to talk about angle and round nose end mills. Not sure where he got this classification method and it is confusing. Also, the description of uncut and downcut bits is incorrect.
Good ok for noobs but lacks some detail for thouse who have basic knowledge of the subject I would recommend to someone who has no expirecen with CNC machines but not someone with some familiarity with cnc cad and machining
This seems to be a nice comprehensive introduction to CNC for beginners. I know nothing so this book is just the thing for me. I'm sure time has moved on since it was written, but there's so much basic terminology related to CNC that I hope this book will give me a jump start.
