This book was a narrative as told to the author regarding one man’s service in the Pacific during World War Two. The narrator was a radioman on a PBY Catalina flying boat in the war.Some of the things I thought were quite interesting were the descriptions of the aircraft and how they were used in the war. These flying boats could carry two thousand pounds of bombs and had half a dozen machine guns of various types attached to them. While they were a lacking in elegance in comparison to other period aircraft, they certainly could attack shipping quite successfully.Another interesting aspect of the book was the personal description of the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were some details mentioned here that I was not completely aware of. It was also hard to imagine such a young man being present at such a major and tragic event.This book is told very much in the style of a fireside chat. It lacks some details in places where it would have been nice to know more. However, if you see it as an old man telling a story it is quite fascinating in places. When a book is this good it is hard not to want more.
Not particularly well written and kind of brief treatment. My Dad flew the PBY-5 with VP-71 and the 5A with VP-12, and it was impossible to get him to give any sort of detailed account of the war, except for colorful anecdotes. Like this book, much more could have been said. Be thankful for what you can get. The story does provide some insights of the final version of the Black Cat night raider in action.
According to the author, Radiomen weren't just a radioman,They were like a Jack of all trades on airplanies and ships! A walking Dictionary is more like.Interesting read. Plan on letting friends who enjoy World War 2 bios know about this book!
I liked the book. The author did a superb job. PBYs were still in service when I joined the Navy and we had two of them where I was stationed. Great aircraft. Did many great things in WWII. John Offield, Hemet, CA
Such a shame the book is so short and lacks detail as the sailor the book is about seems to have had an interesting and busy wartime service in the Pacific flying in Catalina squadrons.
This was just a journal. It was more like a continuous listing that describe on event (not in detail) and then went to the next one. This style covered a period of several years.
This was a fun book because it's a very down home memoir. You feel like it could be your neighbor just telling you what happened to him.
