About the Author

Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

Steiner rejects the material as the ultimate reality. He says the spiritual plane behind the material is the ultimate reality, that it remains hidden because folks are too indolent and arrogant to apply themselves to it. In Christ's name, one might read Steiner three times, just three times over the course of a lifetime even, before dismissing him. Steiner questions the very survival of the human soul (as human). He sees for man one singular hope:the Christ impulse; a living practice of personal human spirituality drawn from the occult implications of the Christ phenomenon. A mystical Christianity that demands personal response from the individual as an individual all his life, and just as particularly in death.Steiner's position is that the very evolution of our species is tied hard to Christ, Christ's message and death, and our understanding of what actually happened at Golgotha.The dogma and ritual of the churches and varying religious ideologies do not address the mystery fully enough if at all Steiner says because their time has long passed, that man is due for an evolutionary morph in consciousness that the dogmas cannot possibly address. This morph will occur Steiner predicts sometime in this the third millennium.Many of us now dismiss the gravity of Golgotha, that Jesus of Nazareth was a decent enough fellow. Give our hearts to it, if we have any heart left. I've read several of his books, some three times. He's a genius. His work is a form of initiatory process; one must struggle through it, rather as Christ struggled under the cross; wrestle with Steiner's revelations, somewhat as Jacob did the angel. Tremendous spiritual substance. In all that Steiner offers. Food for the hungry soul.

I have read this book repeatedly and each time I understand it more deeply.Steiner starts with a description of the physical body then progresses to the more subtle bodies as the etheric, astral bodies and the spiritual Ego which leads to an understanding of the human body in its totality. This is all written methodically and systematically. To read Steiner requires full attention and should be read slowly and consciously. It is an effort well worth making in order to acquire an understanding of the spiritual world and how it interpenetrates the physical. Steiner writes with a clarity and insight given to few. He was a true clairvoyant and wrote and lectured about the Universe and evolution of Humanity going back before Atlantis. Just the act of reading Steiner transforms the reader. It takes time to assimilate this new way of perceiving the world as well as ourselves but well worth the effort.Rudolf Steiner was the founder of the Anthroposophical movement in Germany in the early 1900s.He was a most gifted and inspiring teacher and was responsible for the advent of Waldorf education and Biodynamic farming among other new and more enlightened ways of functioning in the world. He has been my spiritual teacher since the early seventies and certainly has changed my life through his books, lectures and workshops. Theosophy is an excellent start.

My first book from Rudolf Steiner I read when I was 16. Now being 50, I still read it from time to time as it is one of his foundational books. Love it!

A fine piece of work. Steiner provides a clear and persuasive explanation of his construct of the human condition. How we human beings can work positively for self-development and effective support for the needs of the world is nourishing food for thought.

This book was made by scanning an original version and then binding the scanned copy. They say they do this because it keeps the cost down which is fine by me. The problem is, if you have ever scanned a document you will find that the words in the scanned document often get jumbled and the document has to be edited so the sentences can be corrected. THEY DID NOT EDIT THIS BOOK. I REPEAT, THEY DID NOT EDIT THIS BOOK. They say they did not edit this book so that they can keep the cost down. I DID NOT FIND THIS OUT UNTIL AFTER I BOUGHT THE BOOK AND READ THE DISCLAIMER THAT IS WRITTEN INSIDE. Reading Rudolf Steiner is complicated enough but try understanding a book where the sentences are jumbled up and make no sense. AMAZON SHOULD STOP SELLING THIS PARTICULAR VERSION OF THE BOOK.

I recommend to all seekers for truth about themselves. I have most of his books. one of my favorite authors

This is a review of the General Books edition of Teosophy, and not of the content of Teosophy itself. The General Books edition (at $8 here on Amazon) is obviously a scanned version of the book, with no apparent proof reading after the text recognition (OCR) was done. The result is a book with lots of typos, and some pages are pure garble. Reading Steiner is hard enough, so stay away from this edition unless you totally have to save the few extra dollars to get a read-through version.

UGH, why didn't I read the other reviews before I bought this edition? This book is FILLED with the most bizarre typesetting errors you can imagine, which makes it incredibly difficult to read. Sometimes you really do get only what you pay for. I will order another edition, but never again buy a book published by General Books LLC.

An amazingly beautiful book. Any Marilyn Monroe fan should own this. The photographs are so real looking you feel like you could really touch her. Just absolutely stunning book. It's very classy too with the black and gold colors. The quality of the paper is amazing too. They are so thick and feel so good to the touch and I love the smell of the book. Book lovers will know what I mean by that.

If you were to ever buy just one book which contained beautiful black & white, and colour photos of Marilyn Monroe in chronological order, in a LARGE format that you will label as a "keeper" for your personal collection...THIS IS THE ONE ! But it is much more than just "photos":Well-researched, well-documented, much info from those who knew her, worked with her, and were friends with her.In reality, her original brown/brunette hair color was just fine. And, those early, innocent photos showing her in her "natural" state prove the love that the camera showed her...the lense captured her young, glowing beauty way before she was given the "Hollywood Treatment" of blonde hair & studio makeup artists.I remember vividly the day she was found dead, August 5, 1962...just 8 days before my 21st birthday. I could not believe it. A decade older than me...but SO young. And now she was dead.Like the death of James Dean at his early age, both myself and my peers seemed to be losing our "current" popular film icons...just as the age previous to us had lost Thelma Todd, Jean Harlow, and, Carole Lombard.I had just come back from my first trip to Los Angeles & Hollywood. I was preparing to be an Actor and would move out to California a year later to study at the Pasadena Playhouse. And, I could tell from the environment I had witnessed there that it was NOT an easy place to be in if you wanted to remain "who you really were", and this excellent volume on Marilyn verifies my original thoughts.This book was my personal Christmas Gift to myself, and I've already recommended it to a number of my friends...just as I recommend it to you !BTW: This was purchased through Amazon "Free Shipping" and came earlier than I had expected...thanks, Amazon ! I am a huge MM fan, and have a very large collection of books and memorabilia. After reading several reviews here, I knew I had to have it. There are so many books about her, but some are just shoddy and seem thrown together for the sole purpose of making money. This is really the ultimate "coffee table" book. It has a great concept...literally her metamorphosis from Norma Jeane to Marilyn throughout her too short life. This is not the book for someone doing research or wanting to read a lot about her. There are some well chosen quotes, but it is all about the gorgeous photos. Yes, some are very familiar, but there are some I've never seen before. And the photos are what tell the "story" here of her changing looks over the years. The quality is very high, the photos are stunning, and I love the cover. This would be a great gift for any MM fan, but be sure to get a copy for yourself!

A spectacular, stunning coffee table book that you will treasure for its glorious photography of one of the world's most beautiful women. Excellent color reproduction, good selection of rare photographs. I find myself picking up this book time and again just to leaf through it, and I do indeed have it on my coffee table! Visitors to my home invariably notice it and get drawn into looking at it too. A fine tribute to this unforgettable actress whose dealt was most definitely NOT accidental and NOT a suicide.

Just received this beautiful book. I have always been a fan of Marilyn Monroe and have seen all the movies she made. She was such a great comedic actress and I believe would have made a very good dramatic actress also. This book, as I have read in other reviews, is quite large and is broken down into the various stages in her life. The only thing that I don't like is the printing. Very muted which makes it difficult to read. Still worth the money if you are an MM fan.

I bought this book as a Christmas present for my wife, but i must admit i had an interest in it also. We are both in awl of this beautiful lady, her talents as a model and her abilities as an actress. Her movies did not show off the depths of her spirit sadly and unfortunately. She was underrated to say the least. That said, i only wish the book explored her early life and career in greater depth. But there other books out that address this and we intend to buy those also. I can't say enough about the quality of the photographs, they are exquisite in every way. If you love her as much as we do, purchase this book and leave it out on your coffee table. It will cheer you every day. As Bernie Taupin said in his song "wish i could have known you, but i was just a kid" , we have to be content with knowing her through her pictures. Marilyn, you live in our hearts and you will never be forgotten

Unequivocally the BEST book on Monroe (photography-wise) I've ever seen. There is literally no way you'd be disappointed owning this. It's gorgeous and there are SO many photos that I'd never even seen!

If you've always been a Marilyn fan, or even a sort-of fan, and you think you might buy a good photo book of her if you saw one you liked, this is it. The quality of the printing is amazing, and of course the subject is completely captivating. It's as if there's no camera between you and Marilyn. She brings you to where she is. I don't see how any human can not fall in love with her. When I die, I think I want to be buried clutching this book to my chest. I give it a squillion stars.

I'll preface this review by saying I'm a bit of a television junkie which means I was probably predisposed to like this book before I purchased it. However, I do believe that even if you are just a casual television watcher, you will enjoy this book quite a bit. It is, at its heart, a discussion by the author of how some specific television shows changed the way shows were made and how audiences' expectations for television were changed by them. The shows are all recent [almost all from 2000 on (except for Buffy which began in the 90's but ended in the 00's)].The book is not stuffy or endlessly philosophical but an engaging and detailed synopsis of how each show came to be, what its creators intended for it, slip-ups along the way and their eventual ending.You don't need to have watched every show that is discussed in this book. I, for example, didn't watch either The Sopranos or The Wire when they were on. I've seen the occasional episode but could never really get "into" either of those shows. That didn't stop me, however, from enjoying the chapters on those two shows. In fact, I've decided to rent episodes of The Wire and give that show another shot after reading that particular chapter. The author enjoyed some pretty enviable access to show creators and you find yourself wishing you could have been in on those interviews.The only beef that I have with the book (and why I gave it four stars) is that the quantity of grammatical errors is pretty high in this book. I can expect one or two in a professionally published book, but even a self-published book needs to be proofread before being putting out there. There are at least three or four sentences in every chapter that make no sense. Of course, you can figure out what the author meant but when the grammatical errors are so numerous that a reader actively gets distracted by them, that's too many errors.

I used to read Alan Sepinwall's summaries and reviews of NYPD Blue almost twenty years ago, and I was always impressed with how clearly he wrote and conveyed his ideas, and how insightful he was into the characters, dialogue, and story of the subject he was addressing.This book is no different. If anything, Sepinwall has grown as a writer. His insight is clear, and his ideas make sense.I had the luxury of having watched some of the series he discusses and not having watched others. Reading about both was a pleasure. He took me down memory lane on some, and it was like talking about old friends (or in some cases, old enemies!). He captured exactly WHY I loved The Sopranos and The Wire. But he was also able to make me want to try Oz, Deadwood, and Mad Men, because his discussion of those yet unseen (by me) programs sparked curiosity.Having been a cop for twenty years and now a writer (crime fiction), there are plenty of things I could be critical of in a program, or a book like this. But the programs that Sepinwall highlighted were the right ones. They mattered. When I watched them, I didn't find things to nit pick. Instead, I found things to celebrate. Sepinwall takes those things and puts them on display for discussion. Likewise, there was nothing to nit pick in this book. Instead of being a vacuous book length TV Guide feature, it was a meaningful, deep, accurate examination of some of the best shows ever to grace the small screen.

Sepinwall details the behind the scenes stories of twelve TV series that "changed TV drama forever." Each of the twelve series gets a chapter. At it's best, particularly in the chapters about The Sopranos and The Wire, Sepinwall adds insights to the broader meaning of the series in American culture that added to my perspective on the series. Many of the chapters also have hidden gems and if, like me, you watched some of the series years ago, reading them is like reading about an old friend.There is a bit too much insider baseball throughout the book. Names of producers and writers come and go in each chapter (and sometime reappear in later chapters) and the lack of an index makes it hard to remember who is who. Also on the minor quibble side, I disagreed with the inclusion of Oz in the book. While it may be a precursor to some of the other shows, I felt it devolved into farce by the second or third season and became unwatchable at that point. None of the other series (I've seen 7 of the other 11) have this quality.But if you have lived through these series, which really did change TV drama, this is by and large a very good read.

This book is one of three in a series (the other two are My Red Firetruck and My Big Dumptruck.) All three follow the same pattern: a double-spread with four pieces of equipment--labels for various parts and small print explaining the purpose of each piece. The following double-spread then has a picture showing those pieces of equipment in action. The sides of those pages include basic search and find activities highlighting colors, shapes, counting, etc. We really enjoy these books. If we're short on time, we basically just do a "name the equipment," find a couple items, and move on "reading." When we have more time, we can talk about the various parts, practice counting, work on colors, etc. The detailed information gives me as the "previously ignorant of most farm-implements mom" the ability to answer my 2-year-olds questions with real answers. (I almost NEVER actually "read" the small print to my son--we just talk about it.) This isn't a "story" book. It's a "share our love of tractors" book. The chunky size and shape and bright colors make it appealing and the drawings are realistic. If your toddler enjoys farm equipment, this book ought to be a winner. :)

I bought this for a friend's lil boy as a gift. They live out in the country and he rides in the tractor with his daddy sometimes. He loves tractors and anything farm related. This book has an opening above the back wheel to use as a handle so kids can carry it around easier. Perfect for little hands. Good quality board book. Would definitely recommend this cute lil book!!

I bought this book for my almost two year old grandson, and he loves it. It is one of his three favorite books, all by Chip Lovitt. He is just learning to talk, but he will tell me about reading it with his mom when he comes over to visit. He is a heavy machinery obsessed little guy, and we are definitely getting our money's worth from this purchase.

My 2 year old son carries this everywhere and flips the pages. Within days the spine detached.

Great book

This is a cheaply manufactured book. The spine breaks the first time a child bends the cover back. I would not let a child "read" it on his own.

My Grandson loves it!! They were not kidding though, it is GIANT!!

This book has many details and larger words than you would think that a toddler would appreciate but my son loves it! We read it together many times and he loves the detail in the pictures and that the items look like the "real" thing. He is now able to tell us what the pictures are. He says "Harrow" "Tractor" "Harvester" "Seed Drill". This book is one that requires a little more time sitting with your child to show them what the pictures mean, but it is worth it to see how excited they are when they see a "Harvester" and know what it is!
