It's an enjoyable story and one of the classic cyberpunk novels, worth a read if interested. I don't want to spoil anything, it's not for everyone but there's more than a few gems to be gleamed from this.

He turns off machines, that's his job. They are dangerous machines, androids, but he is basically turning off machines. But he realizes that there is little difference between the machines and the people he knows. So why MUST the machines be turned off? This is a moral dilemma for Decker and he cannot untwist his increasing sympathy for the androids he is hunting from his sense of duty to the force and his wife.It is very sad and very depressing especially when you are clearly presented with androids who are not sympathetic, do not care, except about their own survival, and can only imitate emotion, not really feel. In the end Decker is crippled by his murder of the last of the androids. He will no longer hunt them, can no longer kill them.Blade Runner hinted at this moral dilemma but spectacle triumphed over substance and all we have left of it is Decker's moves to save the woman/android he has come to love. That, and the magnificent monologue of Rutger Hauer on the roof of the Bradbury Building. Stunning performance. That recollection of his life makes him human, no different then other humans but then, it's time to die. Love, love, love that scene.

Philip K. Dick's novel surpasses the Ridley Scott's cult classic on many levels. The novel contains some white-knuckled suspense sequences, and it has predicaments and situations that are far more provocative than the film. It seems difficult to believe that Scott and his writers didn't leave it alone instead of trying to improve it. The book deals with what it means to be human, and principally this is empathy. Our bounty hunting San Francisco Policeman wants to buy a live animal rather than keep a computerized sheep that mysteriously malfunctions. In the post-apocalyptic San Francisco, humans all strive to have some kind of animal. These humans live in the aftermath of a nuclear war referred to as "World War Terminus" that has eliminated many animals. As it turns out, our hero is a second-string sort of bounty hunter who discovers that the number one bounty hunter has been wounded by a Nexus-6 model android, and he has the chance 'to retire' these androids. The Rick Deckerd character in the novel has a wife and his adventures against the androids are much more suspenseful. One of the best scenes occurs when he is arrested after trying to test an opera singer and is taken into custody at an alternative San Francisco Police Headquarters. If you love the film, but you haven't read the novel, you may change your mind after you read all the missed opportunities that Scott and company passed up when they adapted the novel.

This kind of novel defies understanding. I could tell there was enough in here to leave revelations after several readings, despite its slim size, but my one read through yielded enough for a satisfying experience. Empathy is an obvious theme. The novel asks us what deserves our empathy, and twists that in surprising ways. Once we start to see the androids as something akin to human, PKD twists our legs off. Its an interesting juxtaposition, and made for a fascinating scene. My favorite quality of this novel is how pkd shifted the world and examined the cultural impact of it. After WWT, live animals became scarce leading to a market of life like robotic animals. Actual animals became pricey commodities and a symbol of status. Our hero of the novel desires a living animal, and he obsesses over it throughout to an almost comical degree. This is where the title comes in, he owns an electric sheep and wonders if the androids have their own humanlike desires.A great read, i see why PKD is a legend. His imagination is astounding and breaks all the rules without breaking a sweat. Will read more of his work including this novel again. You should too.

Seeing as this novel is considered a seminal work in the science fiction genre, I was expecting a lot from this piece of writing.I found the central theme of the novel quite profound and it caused me to consider deeply just what the difference between genuine and counterfeit are, and whether such difference even matters. Also, I deeply enjoyed the complexity of the characters as there were several moments in the novel where their motives were not easily predictable.Furthermore, the book had several tense moments when the detective was attempting to ascertain whether one of his targets was an android or not. I was quite surprised by how tense I felt and this is a testament to the quality of the writing. The end of the book is a fair bit sombre but it feels congruous with the general tone of the book, I was quite satisfied with the end of the novel. This is a classic example of the science fiction genre and a great read, a real must read!

HA! What a surprise! If you've seen the 1982 Blade Runner movie, you already know Deckard is a bounty hunter....works for law enforcement....and has a license to kill rogue androids aka replicants.DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP was the inspiration for the old movie as well as Blade Runner 2049 in theatre's now and is the same in some respects, but without the intensity and violence. It kind of has a strange calmness to it....almost like you've taken a mood enhancer, and there's a whole other plot going on. Very bizarre.I don't want to be a "chicken-head" and give anything away so I'll just say....times are bleak, desperate and totally weird after W.W.T. (World War Terminus) with people trying to survive on a contaminated earth....animals are a rare commodity....and most....those that passed the test have defected to Mars.Definitely MORE thought provoking than the movie....Definitely NOT the action-packed thriller with brutal fights between bounty hunter and a highly-intelligent & dangerous species of replicant."You shall kill only the killers."

The Tour de France: a grueling 2000+ mile long bike race around France, up and down the Alps and Pyrenees, stretching on for 3 weeks. A race that professionals regularly fail to complete. What happens when an amateur that hasn’t biked in years attempts to take on the course? Tim Moore decides to find out, taking the reader through the often off-color history of the tour: cheating riders, abuse of performance-enhancing drugs, and the antics of crazed superfans. Moore oscillates between cursing terrible meals eaten along the way, reveling in the comradery of locals impressed by his undertaking, and moaning the destruction of small towns by creeping globalization. He fails spectacularly at boosting his performance through the abuse of over-the-counter amphetamines. Most of his misadventures are more mundane; he humorously bemoans his difficulties climbing mountains and the odd mechanical noises produced by his bicycle.French Revolutions has many similarities to A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, a book I enjoyed last year. Each covers the adventures of an ambitious self-powered traveler attempting a journey for which they are completely ill-equipped. Both have a heavy dose of comedy and sarcasm, poking fun at people they cross paths with and cursing treacherous terrain, but ultimately saving the most ridicule for themselves during the depths of their ineptitude. Both immediately plot and execute shortcuts to cheat days off their trips. The strength of Bryson’s book is its buddy comedy -- Bryson somehow found and convinced an out-of-shape old friend to join him for the journey. Moore’s journey is solo and leans heavier on the historic backbone both books use to build interest around the respective journeys.Overall, French Revolutions entertains and encourages the reader to think about taking on their own adventure.

I laughed loud a few times when he described how mystified and clueless he was even in the face of a simple puncture and his attempts of saving face when talking to "real cyclists". I especially liked how he described his cheating in the mountains and covering it up in subsequent encounters.Mostly it describes his slow transformation from a "Fred" to a cyclist and I got more than a little bit eager to try Le Tour myself one day (including the occasional cheating).

The book's an enjoyable read, if a bit implausible at first, when the author claims such total ignorance of everything cycling, yet plans a 2000 mile trip. The style reminded me of Bill Bryson, though not reported with Bryson's ultra-sharp eye. I thought it was a fair mix of reportage and humor and once the narrative got past the 'I'm such an ill-prepared novice' confessional was an engaging read with some good historical research. By the way, Tim, the English champion was Percy Stallard, not Stannard.

After reading it, I'm unsure whether to recommend it or nor. It is an amusing account of the author's attempt on cycling the Tour de France route, despite lacking both experience and fitness. It is hilarious at best, but the style of Time Moore is an acquired taste. The language is rich, in fact it is swamped with curious words and British cultural references. Endangered words such as proboscis, ululations, stultifying, decorum, fatuousness, jocularity, etc are littered around the book - but after a while the effect of hyperinflation sets in and it becomes a slight annoyance. In short, it is a book about the love of La Grande Boucle - thus a must for those who enjoy Tour de France, and recommended for those partial to cycling, but who have yet to get inflicted with the Tour fever.

This is an entertaining book; the writing is unique, at times quite hilarious, and also at times a bit hard to follow with very esoteric references made that are supposed to be funny. Overall highly recommended to the cycling enthusiast.

I didn't like the flippancy or overly Brit humor at first. But I grew to like the author as he morphed into a credible athlete by book's end. If you love the Tour or if you've toured by bike or foot in Europe, then you'll identify with many of his stories. It did stir a longing to have a go at some of those climbs.

I loved this book. It was a little difficult to read as Moore is very British, but this also made the book entertaining. It's was a slow read for me, but that gave me a chance to savor the trip!I often felt I was right there with him on his journey around France.

A must read for all adventure travelers not just cyclists. So well written I feel like I was there feeling every experience and funny as well.

It is wonderful to open a book and see your family. I found my father's picture with his family and was amazed. My aunt and my cousin are acknowledged for providing information on my family.

Great fun. Found pix of my grandparents and great-aunts and uncles. Read about many of the people my mother would mention in her stories about Haverhill.

Great read!!

A Child's Portrait of Shakespeare (Shakespeare Can Be Fun!), by Lois Burdett

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?Between the covers of this slim volume is the sort of material parents glow over at back-to-school nights. Burdett refers to the project as her seven-and eight-year-old students' "unedited work." Their lively art portraying Shakespeare and scenes from his life seems to have been polished for publication. But the letters and diary entries that the youngsters have imagined for William and his family, reproduced with all their cuteness and misspellings intact, are appealing for their imaginative precocity and breadth of knowledge. The drawings and writings accompany short, labored verses that give the facts of Shakespeare's life accurately, though the forced rhyme is especially glaring in a book about the Bard. There is a strong sense of a well-meaning adult's heavy hand, and if that hand were involved, why did it not remove the grammatical errors? This book is the result of efforts that were clearly fun and enlightening for the children and serves as a good example for other teachers. But it's questionable whether reading about it will have as much appeal or educational impact as doing it.?Sally Margolis, formerly at Deerfield Public Library, ILCopyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

These are amazing books. Thye were an excellent purchase.

My 9 year old was curious about Shakespeare so I ordered this book as well as three others in this series for her, and she loved them. She can't wait for me to order more for her.

Terrific!

I purchased this book because I was attracted to it and I intended to put it away until I could pull together an interesting unit study on Shakespeare. However, my two boys (7 and 9) could not stand to go to bed without me reading it to them first!! They were instantly attracted to artworks and writing done by kids their age and wouldn't let me pass a single page without reading everything! They enjoyed finding the spelling errors and I was certainly surprised at how many they caught, as I am sure they would've made many of the same ones. My boys asked, after reading the book, if we could study Shakespeare for school THIS week! Yikes, I have got some quick planning to do. This is a wonderfully inspiring leaping off point for a trip into the world of Shakespeare. At the end of the book, one of my sons said it well, "Hey mom, he wrote drama and he lived drama, too!" I think they got it.

How many people really know the details of Shakespeare's life! Find out in this well-done, rhyming text filled with kids illustrations and "letters" and "documents". For example: one child crafts Shakespeare's will...very interesting! Lois Burdett is a genius! Perfect for teaching about Shakespeare - for kids and adults! Buy It!

My son who is 2nd grade loved it and ate it up. After reading the book together, he and I played rhyming games just as the book was written about Shakespeare in rhymes! The pictures drawn by the author's students were also nicely done and appealed to him as well. Five stars without hesitation. Great way to introduce Shakespeare to children.

"Poisoned E-mail" was the very first German-language Three Investigators title to be translated into English. It is part of the 'American-English' series of books that are intended to help German youngsters improve their understanding and knowledge of the English language. Since this book was first released in 2005, many other stories featuring Jupe, Pete and Bob have been translated and published.Refreshingly, this tale lacks many of the elements that made the Crimebusters series so unpopular among fans (the nerd, the jock and the pretty-boy are nowhere to be seen here). The author makes good use of modern computing and internet technology without getting clogged down in jargon or unnecessary complexities.Unfortunately, the quality of the translation is sadly lacking, although tolerable (later titles in this series do see a gradual improvement in the quality of the translation). In addition, the original German names for the characters are used (Justus Jonas and Peter Shaw), and the boys are collectively referred to as the 'Die Drei ???' instead of 'The Three Investigators'. However, I found myself overlooking these problems once I had read two or three chapters. What many will consider being the biggest negative is the use of swearing in the dialogue, including terms such as "d*ckhead" (twice), "slimy fat b*gger" and "sly cow".Despite the shortcomings noted above, I found "Poisoned E-mail" to be a fun, enjoyable and refreshing addition to the Three Investigators canon. I rank this title as being superior to a handful of entries in the original series. Overall, if you can stomach the poor translation, this is a worthy addition to any Three Investigators collection.

Review

"What nonbelievers reject is often not God, but the caricature of God that theologians have synthesized over the centuries. A faith based on that caricature is poorly suited to the hard facts of the real world. These authors masterfully retrace how that caricature was drawn, show where its distortions lie and offer a sound alternative to it."--John Boykin, author of The Gospel of Coincidence: Is God in Control?"Almost five centuries ago, Christians thrilled at the recovery of the truth of salvation by grace that had benn hijacked from them for a millennium of church history. This book throbs today with the same excitement at the rediscovery of a God infinitely greater and freer than the cold abstractions of medievally minded reductionist theologians make him to be. The Openness of God signals a new openness of his people toward the God who has never ceased being open to them."--Gilbert Bilezikian, professor emeritus, Wheaton College"The Openness of God presents a comprehensive case for a relational model of the biblical God. It is written collaboratively by a team of fine thinkers. Whether or not its arguments finally convince all, The Openness of God develops interpretations and explores insight that will enrich every careful reader."--David K. Clark, Bethel Theologcal Seminary

From the Back Cover

Presents A Careful and Full-Orbed Argument that the God known through Christ desires "responsive relationship" with his creatures. While it rejects process theology, the book asserts that such classical doctrines as God's immutability, impassibility and foreknowledge demand reconsideration. The authors insist that our understanding of God will be more consistently biblical and more true to the actual devotional lives of Christians if we profess that "God, in grace, grants humans significant freedom" and enters into relationship with a genuine "give-and-take dynamic". The Openness of God is remarkable in its comprehensiveness, drawing from the disciplines of biblical, historical, systematic and philosophical theology. Evangelical and other orthodox Christian philosophers have promoted the "relational" or "personalist" perspective on God in recent decades. But here is the first major attempt to bring the discussion into the evangelical theological arena.

This is a great book about open theism, a view which I believe makes the most sense and should be adopted by every religious believer. I never liked the idea of a timeless God who is pure actuality and therefore has no potential to create something new. After all, if God could only make one world, then he surely would make the best possible world, except for the fact that there is no such thing as the greatest possible world; no matter how good a given world is, God could always add a little more goodness, just as there is no highest number.I especially liked chapter four which expounds the philosophical justifications behind open theism.I highly recommend this book.

A refreshing view of a personal loving God who is open to dialogue with his children and does respond to our prayers and unforeseen events. It rejects the notion that everything that will ever happen has been pre-ordained by God, even the unbelief of those who do not place their faith in Him.

I'll start of by saying: I'm not an open theist. I wasn't before I read the book, and I'm not now that I'm done reading it.But, that's not to say that I didn't find the book persuasive. The authors do a very good job explaining their take on the Greek philosophical source of the notion of the timelessness of God. And they do a very good job laying out comparisons between open theism and some of the other views of "God and time". These comparisons, in my opinion, are what made this a good book. While I disagree with their conclusion that "open theism is better that other views", I do agree that, mostly, they lay out the practical implications of the various views fairly for the most part. Ultimately, though, my evaluation is that some forms of "traditional theism" are still better than open theism. But, this book did convince me of something important. I'm willing to make divine openness a "to each his own" issue in Christianity. Each of us finds a different model of God to be most useful in our relationship with Him. So, as long as we seek to build our view of God on Scripture, I am willing to be tolerant of people who I disagree with. This book convinced me that open theists do try to build their view of God on Scripture. So, though I'm not one of them, I see little reason to bicker with them.If you want a book that will lay out open theism in terms that a layman can more or less understand, this is the book for you.If you're looking for a more deeply theological/philosophical book on the issue, I wouldn't recommend this one. Mostly because I understood it too well for people who love "God and time" theology to find it satisfying.

Very technical approach to the subject. Solid details that substantiate each thought. Great book.

Awesome book, and I personally know one of the authors. Rick Rice is a fellow classmate of mine. He is a close friend, and a good man, who I like and believe in.

Pinnock joins four other authors to provide one of the more hotly debated books on the doctrine of God amongst Evangelical Christians. At the root of the vision of deity they designate the "Open God" is their shared conviction that love is God's chief attribute, and all other divine attributes must not undermine the primacy of love.In order to offer a coherent doctrine of God, essayists address issues of divine transcendence, immanence, power, omniscience, mutability, and passibility. At the core of his proposal is his account of divine loving activity that includes God's responsiveness, generosity, sensitivity, openness, and vulnerability. In fact, Clark Pinnock contends that "love rather than almighty power is the primary perfection of God" (114).Essayists in The Openness of God argue that no doctrine is more central to the Christian faith than the doctrine of God. Laying out a coherent, livable, biblical doctrine is crucial for the practical and theoretical aspects of theology. Many Christians, however, observe an inconsistency between their beliefs about the nature of God and their religious practice. For example, Christians ask God to act in a certain way when they pray, although their formal theology may suppose that God has predetermined all things. A major factor in assessing the viability of a theological scheme, then, is the piety question: How well does this "live?""How can we expect Christians to delight in God or outsiders to seek God if we portray God in biblically flawed, rationally suspect, and existentially repugnant ways?" asks Pinnock (104). In his attempt to avoid rationally suspect hypotheses, Pinnock seeks to offer a coherent doctrine of God, i.e., each divine attribute "should be compatible with one another and with the vision of God as a whole" (101).The Openness of God authors share the basic conviction that love is the principal theme in Christian theology. Pinnock insists, for instance, that love is the primary perfection of God. Richard Rice, who assumes the task of offering biblical support for the open view advanced in the book, claims that the open view expresses two basic convictions Scripture supports. First, love is the most important quality humans attribute to God. Second, love is more than care and commitment; it also involves sensitivity and responsiveness. Rice further notes that, from a Christian perspective, love is the first and last word in the biblical portrait of God. When one enumerates God's qualities, one must not only include love on the list, but, to be faithful to the Bible, one must put love at the head of that list. A doctrine of God faithful to the Bible must show that all God's characteristics derive from love. Rice concludes: "Love, therefore, is the very essence of the divine nature. Love is what it means to be God" (19).Pinnock embraces the notion that God is like a loving parent when affirming these hypotheses. In this parental model, God possesses "qualities of love and responsiveness, generosity and sensitivity, openness and vulnerability" (103). God is a person who experiences the world, responds to what happens, relates to humans, and interacts dynamically with creatures.Essayists reject the classic conception of God described as "an aloof monarch" removed from the world's contingencies, i.e., the entirely transcendent God. They reject the deity who is completely unchangeable, all-determining, irresistible, and does not risk. "The Christian life involves a genuine interaction between God and human beings," Pinnock contends. "We respond to God's gracious initiatives and God responds to our responses . . . and on it goes" (7).Essayists also deny divine foreordination, divine foreknowledge of free creaturely actions, and the hypothesis that either divine foreknowledge or unilateral determination are compatible with creaturely freedom. God knows all things that can be known, but divine omniscience does not mean that God possesses exhaustive foreknowledge of all future events. Total knowledge of the future would imply that future events are fixed. "If choices are real and freedom significant, future decisions cannot be exhaustively known," Pinnock explains (123).Thomas Jay Oord

This book is an excellent introduction to an idea of an open & loving God,and is presented by five different writers, from five different perspectives:biblical, historical, systematic and philosophical theology. It is a pleasant and up-lifting rediscovery of a God who takes responsibility for His creation and who will in the end reconcile everybody to Himself. This book also answers questions how present evil and suffering in the world will be rewarded in the future by God, and explains that our sins will be punished with a finite punishment (for finite sins) and not with an eternal punishment which would be disproportional to the offenses committed, and in the end everybody will end up in Heaven.

Wonderful book. Very interesting and easy enough to understand. I think that molinism is a better option but considering open theisms popularity it's good to be informed.

Great heart felt book with authentic personal shares. I love how Sheryl ties scripture into her journey. I find it well written and easily applicable.

The author goes on and on about people that after the death of her husband "let her and her kids down". It was mentioned so much that after awhile I begin to lose interest in the book. It appears at times as though it was written for "those people" to let them know that although they weren't there for her and her kids she made it just fine without them. Seemed as though she is still a bit hurt and bitter. I also considered the author to be a tad self righteous like when she pointed out that some people seemed lost in grief such as when she stated that she knew "grievers" who was stuck in "selfishly" running "awful- izing " circles around their loses. (her words) Then later she says a friend told her she should be over her husband's death by now and she found it offensive. Well I find it offensive that she thinks people that get stuck in their grief are selfish. Why is she the only one who gets to say when people should be over their grief and ready to get back to life. No one gets to judge how long people are "stuck" in the grieving process. There were some parts of the book that I found meaningful so I gave it a few stars.

I received this book from Booksends ARC in return for an honest review. Here is my honest review of this book. This is a beautiful story that takes you through the author's life and her doubts about God and what it took for her to realize that he does hear you when you speak to him. I love how she ties scripture to feelings. This is her journey but we all have been here and it help me just knowing I wasn't alone. I would recommend this book to people who feel lost in faith.

I was hoping for a good read but sadly it doesn't sound like this author is walking a Victorious Christian Life herself so it makes me wonder how she can help others get the victory.

While I haven't experienced the tragic losses this author did, I have suffered loss in having to move and change jobs in the past few years. My plans were turned upside-down; it really threw me for a loop. I needed this book to remind me He is sovereign and I can trust Him as I wait ... and that doubts are okay, and will grow my faith

I am a Christian and I feel that this book does not represent Jesus at all. It focuses a lot on mother threasa and her duty to God.

Was pretty honest about her struggles and I always appreciate that. Wish their was more advice then just give God Your doubts and faith and hope will come. Still gained wisdom from this book.

It’s not a bad book. It’s not especially preachy even though that may have been what I expected. It just didn’t hold my interest. That may be ME and not the book.
