Review

"Every Day Is Extra offers a detailed record of an important life . . . it is frank, thoughtful and clearly written. . . . What lingers are not the parts but the whole; not the life, but the man. . . . A bittersweet reminder of what the country once demanded of its leaders.” (Gideon Rose The New York Times Book Review)“In these pages Kerry shows remarkable honesty, depth, even spirituality. . . . There is remarkable poignancy — not the usual currency of the career politician and the country’s top diplomat.” (David M. Shribman The Boston Globe)"The strength of Kerry’s memoir is that it draws back the curtain on a life you thought you knew, but turns out to be a bit different. . . . A surprisingly personal book." (David Ignatius The Washington Post)“The difference between memoir and autobiography can be fuzzy, but Every Day Is Extra . . . has both the reflective candor of the former and the painstaking, chronological detail of the latter.”  (The New Yorker)"Kerry saw U.S. power much as he saw his own privilege: as a call to service. His memoir gives a comprehensive and, in places, moving account of his response to that call. People disagree over the wisdom and effectiveness of U.S. foreign policy in the Kerry years, but there can be no serious dispute about the integrity and patriotism that Kerry brought to the job." (Foreign Affairs)“Fine reading for politics junkies, especially those with an interest in how policy is made. . . . A smart look at not just [Kerry's] life, but also our times." (Kirkus Reviews)“[A] fine memoir. . . . This book reveals a man of quiet, passionate patriotism, immense intelligence, and thoughtfulness.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))"The war hero, senator, secretary of state and presidential candidate has plenty to write about – and to be right about." (The Guardian (US))

This is an excellent and important book, a great read for anyone concerned about modern American history, America’s role in the world, the great issues that arose throughout John Kerry’s career, which is far from done. The chapters that discuss Kerry’s friendship and work with John McCain are timely, especially his discussion about when he and McCain talked about McCain possibly being Kerry’s running mate during his campaign for the presidency in 2004. Kerry’s discussion about his quest for a two-state solution to reach peace between Israel and the Palestinians is a fascinating read, profound because of the nobility of Kerry’s vision for peace, which will someday come true because their is no other way, except endless conflict. Kerry’s discussion about his work to combat climate change and environmental degradation has great historical value and timeless environmental value, especially with the current American president who sadly aligns with polluters. Kerry’s portrait of many famous and historically important figures, American and international, is quite interesting and deeper than what is usually offered in shorter form news stories. The lessons Kerry learned from his heroic service in Vietnam to his diligent and effective service as Secretary of State are valuable to all professionals in all fields, and to students of all ages, and tell the story of a far better America and far nobler country than what the world is enduring under Trump. This book is a must read for those who care about history, politics and the future of the world!

John Kerry's memoir "Every Day Is Extra" is indeed a thorough and inspiring sharing of the life and times of a brilliant yet humble man. Since I have written my own recent memoir, it is easy to appreciate both the challenge and the joy that this exercise can bring. Although I was certainly aware of Kerry's accomplishments (as well as his disappointments) in the political arena, I'll admit that prior to reading his profoundly authentic narrative, I knew very little about his "real life". This narrative is extremely detailed and deeply rewarding, and I recommend it highly to anyone who is interested in encountering the "Real Kerry".

John Kerry's memoir is marvelous! Whether he is sking down the Alps, running with the bulls in Pamplona or navigating with his men at night in a SWIFT boat along the Mekong Delta, Kerry bares his soul with wit and razor-sharp honesty. The reader experiences the evolution of a boy to a man, a soldier to a citizen, a protester to a politician, and a statesman to a scholar. Along the way, he makes life-long friends and political allies and enemies.Like many of his generation, Kerry heeded the words of President Kennedy to "pay any price, bear any burden". He has continued to serve his country and live a life of purpose. With both gratitude and awe, this reviewer awards five stars to this wonderful work of writing.

So great to read a well written book about an honorable person with integrity. Kerry comes across as knowledgeable, diplomatic, tough but compassionate in preventing conflict, protecting the environment and advocating for youth with programs like YouthBuild.Kerry gives detailed accounts of his numerous negotiations with world leaders and behind the scene set up talks during his time in the Senate and State Department. His negotiating skills and knowing leaders resulted in peaceful solutions that saved lives. He put enormous hours and efforts, as he did with other projects, into getting an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, but the leaders were entrenched. My time in Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and Syria, makes me wonder if he would have been more successful if he held out the approximately $ 3 billion in military aid the US gives Israel each year? With his hard work, Former Secretary of State Kerry made a difference and formulated numerous agreements. We taxpayers got our money’s worth with him. He continues to work and speak out on the issues he cares about whether it is at environmental conferences, teaching or media interviews. The book ends on an optimistic note and reminds us we have gone through hard times before and our problems “can be solved by man.”

I bought the Audible version and couldn't stop listening. Kerry is one of our country's greatest leaders and I hope he continues in public service. Phenomenal book!

John Kerry is my age and his story has helped me relive my own story. His insightful recounting of his life made me rethink the events which impacted all of us. This is a must read!

A must read. The most under appreciated former Sec. Of State John Kerry.

John Kerry has lived a life truly of fascination from fighting in the Vietnam war, running for President of the United States, hopscotching around the world as Secretary of State, and as a private citizen. He favors us with his many experiences on 584 pages of text in his attempt to serve his country and make the world a better place in which to live. If you have lived through the same time period of John Kerry you have a chance to renew what you both experienced through his words with much more to learn.Despite current American setbacks regarding climate change which threaten future generations John Kerry remains optimistic regarding the future of the planet because history has always shown that America has always risen to meet the challenges it faces and those challenges are all the more relevant today with the present administration at the helm. This book, in itself, is a challenge to get through the 584 pages. His role as Secretary of State aptly illustrates how challenging it is to be traveling all over the world to meet with leaders and make the world a better place in which to live. It may take a while for you to complete the book but the time it takes will be worth the trip.
