I don't leave many reviews but I had to for this book since I felt that I got so much out of it, I might as well tell other people about it. In short, it's a stellar and dense read about what motivates people and our brains, and how we can short circuit that and take advantage of it to our self-discipline. It's important to understand what you are battling in procrastination, perfectionism, distractions, and lack of motivation, and that's all addressed here. Honorable mention on the characterization of motivation as a temporary state of mind, where discipline is more automatic. Then more about habit formation and longer lasting behavior modification. Fascinating section on dopamine control, as well as application of the 40% rule that the military has become famous for.Far more than you'd expect but still very accessible and applicable. Overall, just fantastic.

I find that many of the books on so-called self discipline are purely motivational. "self discipline you just get by sitting in a room and doing." Yes, maybe on some level, but that's not helpful. Like, how do you get to that point?This author gives real tips and tactics to get to that point where you can sit, as he says, with wet socks and never have a problem with it. It is also about building the tolerance for discomfort and understanding how your environment and relationships have a huge impact somewhere on your mindset. I particularly liked the four questions posed in one of the later chapters to ask yourself: one of them was "So am I a disciplined person or not" when you are looking at a temptation right in the face. If you leave yourself with no wiggle room and only room for a yes or no answer, then it can be a powerful reminder and helpful for self-awareness.I read a LOT of books and this is one of the best of the year for me. I really, REALLY recommend this book if you have self-discipline issues. It explains better ways to deal with urges, procrastination, and how to get working on things you want to do. For the price, it's a complete steal.

This book was absolutely amazing; I purchased the audio version and was able to listen to it everyday during my work commute. I especially loved how the book touches on specific areas to help develop discipline and after each chapter the author reviews the main take-aways. The tips are very realistic and worth trying out. I have improved my self-discipline so much since reading this book. Even when I feel like putting off things like, exercising, I do not put it off anymore. I get right to it after the messages from this book re-play in my head. The information is great and it sticks!

I'm an 80 year old retired senior executive that, during my career, have read dozens of self help books,yet I found many helpful new ideas that I can apply as I continue my quest to continuously improve the way I live. Highly recommend this book.

One of the best non-fiction books I have read in terms of clarity and brevity. It is not a fun read like one would find with authors like Malcolm Gladwell but if the point is to gain knowledge in order to become self-disciplined then Peter Hollins is the guy I want writing about it (No - I don't know him). While Hollins understands the science behind self-discipline he does not write in that language. The writing is simple and clear. I have read a lot of the studies Hollins cites in this book. I understand them better when he summarizes them and puts them together with other studies to create a cogent, holistic understanding of self-discipline. Hollins is perhaps the most gifted writer I have found in terms of simplifying a subject to a readily understandable level and making it useful yet brief.

I really like this book. This will be a reference guide for the foreseeable future; you know, until I can get this self-discipline stuff nailed down. I like Peter Hollins' books. I have several. I appreciate his science-based approach to everything. His books are accessible, not over-written; easy to breeze through. With his books I always walk away feeling like I didn't have to expend much effort to get a lot of helpful, ready-to-use, information.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! The beginning was a little slow to interest me but further in it gave very valuable and interesting advice on improving one's self. I will definitely read this again and highlight paragraphs that interest me and give great insight
