In preparing for my first trip to Costa Rica solely for birdwatching, I bought this book along with the 2nd edition of the Garrigues & Dean field guide. The two books pair extremely well. This one concentrates on the birds one is most likely to see, making it the primary guide I'm studying in the lead up to my trip. But I'll have the Garrigues & Dean with me as well, as it's coverage is exhaustive. Both field guides are easy to use, well designed, attractive, and informative.

No tabs or color coding on pages to help you flip quickly to the bird type you are looking for. Other than that, the photos were beautiful and was a great was to get to know about the birds of Costa Rica before going on a trip, as well as useful foe indentification.

This book combined with Garrigues' book The Birds of Costa Rica, were indispensible to me on my trip. They are not up to the quality of a Sibley or a Peterson, but these are the best available for Costa Rica.

This was a gift and greatly appreciated for their upcoming Costa Rica trip!

On our recent trip to Costa Rica we would not have been able to add 26 birds to our life time list. We identified around 50 birds total. The book was a great purchased.

Wish the species list was a bit more extensive, but having the photos as reference is very helpful. Nice as a small field guide.

This book is fantastic! So well written. I have a summer place in the St. Lawrence River in Chippewa Bay, and I am amazed how much I did not know about the wonderful history of the area. The photographs from the Oak Island archives are worth the price of the book. The historical pictures are priceless. One of my favorite parts was about Frederick Remington the famous artist and sculptor who spend a great deal of time in Chippewa Bay. I did not know of his history with Oak Island. Many people one of his famous pieces that are in the oval office of the President. This book is a must read for anyone familiar with the area, or anyone who wants to learn some great history of the wonderful wooden boats of the area. Fantastic Dave Kunz, love it. Can't recommend it enough.​

For more than a year, he collaborated with Cambridge Seven Associates of Cambridge, Mass., architect and designer of the new museum, as well as the media provider, Cortina Productions, and the exhibit fabricator, D&P Inc., to create the world-class museum. The World of Little League museum project remained on schedule and under budget. As its Executive Director, he leads Little League's efforts to publicize the new museum through traditional and new media. In his previous role with Little League International, he led the communications efforts, and was responsible for a staff of professionals who created all print, Internet, social media and video productions for Little League -- emphasizing the education of millions of children in the program, as well as adults. He produced and directed a variety of short films on specific educational topics for Little League, for in-house and worldwide distribution in several languages. One of many educational projects Lance spearheaded included a publication for volunteers and a parents on identifying potential child sex offenders. He worked closely with the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in producing frank information on how to protect children from this type of abuse. He also served as the chief spokesperson for Little League for more than 15 years. His guest appearances include stints on The Today Show, CNN, Outside the Lines, BBC, Al Jazeera, Nightline, PBS, MSNBC and other outlets. He has been quoted in hundreds of newspapers and magazines worldwide. From 2001 through 2008, Lance was the liaison for Little League International to The White House and President George W. Bush's Tee Ball on the South Lawn initiative. During that time, 20 Little League Tee Ball games were played at the White House under his direction, with President Bush attending each game. He served for 17 years on the Little League Rules Committee, and is the author of all rules enacted in Little League since 1996, including a 13-page rule regarding the first use of video replay at any level of baseball. This rule has been employed successfully at the Little League Baseball World Series for four years. He led Little League's involvement in the production of "Mickey," a film by author John Grisham, directed by Hugh Wilson. Lance co-authored (with Robin Van Auken) "Play Ball - The Story of Little League Baseball," chronicling the history of Little League, published by Penn State University Press in 2001. The book was re-released in 2004 as a companion to the PBS documentary, "Small Ball," which followed a team from Aptos, Calif., from the local level to the Little League Baseball World Series. Prior to Little League, Lance was a professional sports reporter and worked for the Tampa Tribune and the Clearwater Sun, covering various pro, collegiate and high school sports. His beats included NFL, NHL, Major League Baseball Spring Training, horse racing, and sailing. Lance attended St. Petersburg College (FL) majoring in communications, and attended and graduated from the U.S. Department of Defense Information School at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.

I bought this book to donate to the local library in memory of a great little league coach my son played baseball for. It is a great book and a great addition to the library.

I bought this book for my husband. He played in the Little League World Series in 1961 in Williamsport, PA. It is a great book with lots of facts, history and pictures.

Very imformative, well written, but needs more imformation about rules, and regulations on tournament play. Great list of champions in all tournaments, except the 50/70 Intermediate division. The history is very well presented, and is very relevant.

Having grown up playing in the Original Little League and knowing most of the volunteers who made it a success, the book provided insight into what transpired during the 1950,s that changed its course in later years.

Kind of boring for a kid. More for adults

It is a story of devoted parents and dedicated leaders who chose this unusual way to teach children some of the most important lessons of life, lessons in loyalty, devotion, skill, teamwork, competition, losing, winning and persistence. Since baseball requires only short bursts of energy rather than endurance, it is well suited for younger children. This history of the Little League organization is also a story of conscientious leaders adapting to change during wars and other cultural crises. Their efforts encouraged the playing of baseball by children in countries all over the world, an achievement documented in the appendix of the book. It is an inspiring story.

I pre-ordered this book months ago and devoured it when it arrived Tuesday. Caddyshack’s the first “adult” comedy I remember going to the theater to see—maybe not the best pick for an eleven year old. A family friend and her younger brother took me to a raucous, packed Friday evening show. I loved it, everyone loved. It played well here in the Midwest and later when it would come on cable I’d watch it again and again.Which is why it’s so surprising that it got such a tepid response at first. I hadn’t how it related to the sea change that came from Animal House, or how it fit next to the other big comedy blockbusters of that year The Blues Brothers and Airplane! Nashawaty does an amazing job providing context. He spends solid time looking at the evolution of the filmmakers from Harvard Lampoon to National Lampoon to Second City to SNL. When we get to the production of the movie proper he provides an amazing behind the scenes with the crew, cast, and hangers on.But he smartly tempers that with his discussion of the rivalries, painful relationships, and excesses of the production. He gives us a keen sense of emotions and human cost involved, spending a good deal of time talking about the tragedy of Doug Kenney. The book’s smartly structured, a pleasure to read, and the author has great descriptions and excellent turns of phrase. A great read.

The Making of a Loveable Movie! Starting at Harvard then the National Lampoon then Animal House and finally Caddyshack how a small group of people, many SNL castmembers and original castmembers, make an average movie that is immortalized forever to those who laughed our way through the viewing. Great stories of Chevy Chase looking at it from a different perspective now. And Bill Murray shows his true improvisation capabilities. Pond or Pool per Chevy Chase in a totally improvised scene.How did Rodney Dangerfield steal the show and Harold Ramis as a neophyte director who early and in editing almost ruined the movie? But really this book is about Doug Kenney. Don't know who he is? Well look him up. And if you ever need to lead a band in to a deadend alley, he's your guy.

Stellar piece on one of the most iconic comedies of all time. Going into reading of this book, I knew very little of the breadth of chaos that went into creating this film. Was sad to read about Doug Kenney’s spiral, and shocked to realize I’ve been to a specific location that factors heavily in his zany life.I wish there were as comprehensive books as this about my *all* my favorite films from growing up. The author really painted a fantastic portrait of what it would have been like to be caught up in the heyday of Hollywood’s rebirth in the 70’s and 80’s.

The author has done a fantastic job of guiding the reader through a web of interconnected personalities, circumstances and events with uncommon clarity and exceptional style and pacing, which results in a book that is much richer than its title/topic suggests. A revealing, penetrating, and always entertaining description of how bright, creative personalities working in multiple media shaped and were shaped by the culture in the late 70s. This book about comedy is a deceptively serious achievement and success.

I wrote that headline because that's not common for me. Maybe in a few days, but finishing it on the same day is rare. My attention span isn't the greatest so I'm often reading a few things and watching a few movies and tv programs at the same time. But I read this all without anything else interfering.Anyway, I found it all very interesting. The tragic story of Doug Kenney, Harold Ramis's directorial debut and the incredible amount of improv that was involved (mostly for the better), National Lampoon, SNL and SCTV background, the stories of the actors involved, the incredible amount of editing necessary, etc. etc.What was meant to be the main story line was also very surprising. I'll just say that a love triangle with the woman at the middle of it having a goofy accent (that isn't funny, just annoying) is a recipe for disaster. Luckily everyone recognized where the strengths of the material were and it's stood the test of time.The only thing that bothered me (but probably wouldn't bother most people) is the writer putting down comedy before that era, and even in that era that didn't involve certain groups. But that's just a minor gripe.So I recommend the book highly for anyone who is a fan of the movie.

Though Caddyshack is revered as a golf movie, there’s little actual mention of golf in this book about the making of the film. Rather, the book delves into the history of the people behind the film, from their Harvard Lampoon roots to the founding of The National Lampoon and the tremendous success of the first film from the Lampoon people, “Animal House”.More than just a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, this book chronicles a time of great social change, holding great appeal even beyond just the interest in the film itself. That being said, the backstory and the behind-the-scenes looks at the personalities involved in the movie will only bolster the interest of Caddyshack fans.

Interesting behind the scene story of the making of the iconic film, Caddyshack. Well written with interesting mini-bios of Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Harold Ramos, and Doug Kenney among others. Lots of cocaine fueled the making of the movie. I got the sense that I’d read some of the stories that comprise the book elsewhere, but I still enjoyed it. Recommended.

This is a well-researched and enjoyable read taking the reader behind the scenes. Between the drugs and egos, it is a wonder the movie ever got made. There were several parts of the movie that seemed "out of place" and after reading the book, I now know why and how they occurred.If you are a fan of Caddyshack, I highly recommend this book for an in-depth view of the people in front of the camera and those behind it. Fascinating history of how the main players came to prominence and the interactions that came directly from those early days in their careers.

A fantastic book on the underworld and those who were part of it. I have to admit that I'm a big Joe Bruno fan and therefore a bit bias. I've read the first two volumes and they were every bit as good. Download it, buy the paperback, but however way you get it, get it!!!

The book reads like a collection of independent short stories. Some of the stories are better than others. I wasn't entirely disappointed by the book. However, I did skip over a couple of the stories that didn't grab me in the first few pages. Other stories within the book were quite interesting.

Joe Bruno has done his homework and done his research so well that when he tells his story its not like reading a history book. You are there with the people who come from all walks of life and wind up on the wrong side of the law. Go a long with Joe in this fascinatating story of some of New Yorks seedier residents who made it to a wanted poster. A great read!

I have read the other books in this series. Learning the Mafia really does exist up to current times. Also if you check out the names on www.findagrave.com you can find where some of them are buried. If you like looking for that sort of research or such. I just enjoy reading about the people and how bad they seem back before 1900. They were the BULLIES of the world
