This is a great book for the first time high school tennis coach or someone with years of experience. Bill Patton has been a high school coach for over 20 some years. He covers every item you will face as a High School coach, from dealing with the principal, choosing captains, how to get the most from your practices, it is all here. As a teaching professional I purchased this book to help me with the task of coaching a high school boy's tennis. I knew I needed help as it is a whole different animal. Great book, get the workbook with it so helpful.

I was looking forward to a "how to" for coaching that might include drills, season planning, injury management, etc. What I found was a book full of useful information about working with school districts, athletic directors, players and parents to organize and run a successful tennis program at the high school level. Tons of great anecdotes and real life stories to back up the advice and knowledge of over 20 years of coaching experience. I was drawn further into the world of high school tennis than I ever anticipated including topics such as team unity, successful leadership, the role of team captains, goal setting, and player selection. A useful guide to existing coaches and a 'must-have" for prospective or new coaches!

About the Author

Jeremy J. Siegel is a professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Siegel received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. and taught for four years at the University of Chicago before joining the Wharton faculty in 1976. The basic theme throughout is simply that stock returns (in all developed nations, though at differing slopes, pp. 88-90) regress to a mean, as bonds, and all other investment alternatives, do not. That’s one point. By taking the long historical view (from the dawn of the American republic), Siegel also demonstrates (Chapter 6, pp. 93-103) that in this country over periods of five years and longer, real stock returns (after inflation) stray from our mean return (6.5%) less and less, until at thirty years the observed deviations are half what standard statistics expect. So stocks are both much more volatile short-term—cf. Mandelbrot and Hudson, The (mis)Behavior of Markets—and much less volatile long-term, than Modern Portfolio Theory says they should be. That’s point #2. And, his third crucial point, value strategies (Chapter 12, pp. 173-193, on low-P/E, high-dividend stocks) consistently surpass the market indices by 2% or more in annual compounded returns. I know of no other book which has made any one of these three points so clearly and demonstrated them so forcefully with historical data and mathematical analysis. Ben Graham, to be sure, made the case for value investing decades ago, and does a better job of understanding and presenting the process than anyone else before or since, but of course he couldn’t come close to the range and depth of modern databases and computing power to undergird his argument. Siegel has written the one book since Graham’s Intelligent Investor that everyone should read and re-read before presuming to buy any security other than an index fund.So, for instance, I needed to know that stocks have never failed to offer a positive real return over any period of seventeen years or more. Long-term bonds, in contrast, since the Civil War have outperformed stocks in just one 30-year period (by a minuscule .05% per year!), as interest rates fell from 16% in late 1981 to 2% in 2011—but the real return on these “safe” investments was negative for the entire post-war period before that, and likely will be for years to come. And Siegel repeatedly makes the point that especially when we think about retirement the only safety that matters is the assurance of rising purchasing-power over spans of decades.The book is not without its limitations. I don’t think Siegel understands options or other derivatives; his faulty discussion of stock index options in the 4th edition has been abbreviated, but his remaining remarks are misleading at best. Consequently the major new sections in this edition, which deal with the recent financial crisis, while fairly sound (e.g. showing how slight a role Fannie and Freddy played), understate the impact of synthetic credit default swaps, which by the time the fever broke had made the subprime mortgage market five times larger than the mess the bankers and mortgage brokers had created in the first place. Hence next to no one had any idea how immense the problem really was, though a few (see M. Lewis, The Big Short) saw enough to profit hugely.Other material in Siegel’s 378 pages adequately and sensibly covers major areas of historical interest (the primary stock indices, money, monetary policy and the gold standard), analyzes other financial and economic crises, surveys current issues (the business cycle, market responses to current events) and concerns (the developed world’s retirement “crisis”, on which he is quite optimistic), and I could cavil here and there or suggest other specialized treatments. But what he has to say on these topics is sufficient (and his history of the S&P 500 is excellent) for firmly embedding the three points with which I began, which are points every investor should ponder long and hard.But how many of us will profit from them? On p. 97 he mentions the allure of “safer” alternatives which do after all outperform stocks, over periods of one or two years, nearly 40% of the time. I don’t know that he sees how deep the pain goes for individuals watching dollars vaporize by the thousands, dollars which a bank account would at least have preserved and guaranteed. Nor, I think, does he see how hard it would be for asset managers to follow his principles when markets soar and “irrational exuberance" reigns triumphant; sticking to a long-term strategy is impossible when benchmark risk means your assets are marching out the door. Siegel’s work will most benefit those who know not just the concepts but themselves. It hurts to play from behind, alone, trusting the odds, trying to trust yourself. Long-term investment is a discipline less of intellect than of temperament and character. But the discipline of study and thought is still part of it, and Siegel’s history and mathematics keep me mindful of what the true odds are. In this and earlier editions, Stocks for the Long Run is one of just six books (cf. my review of M. Mauboussin More Than You Know) which have decisively shaped how I think about what I do.

As an experienced investor who has read over a hundred investment books, Stocks for the Long run has always been in my top 5. Eager for updated data and analysis, I read the new 5th edition, but sadly, it added some uninsightful reviews of the credit crisis and took out some really good stuff, including data on returns following high sentiment, fed cuts, and economic cycles. One of my favorite items omitted was about the justified PE on the nifty fifty and what growth rates justify stock stock prices. Still a great book, but I think the 3rd edition is much better.

I have two hobbies that I enjoy that are thought provoking. Playing chess and investing in stocks. Sometimes preachers are judged for investing for retirement or seeking to use the stock market to provide for themselves in retirement, but at the end of the day, these judgers are not going to pay your bills. This book was a great overview of the stock market, and even the great recession. It provided a lot of helpful advice, and helped create a long term perspective on investing in a stock. It highlights the value appraoch to stocks, but this pond has been fished a lot over the years. The book gave a lot of good principles to follow. Typically, there are highs and lows, and typically it is from people beginning to be too pessimistic or optimistic. Controlling your emotions is huge. It talks about passive investing, which I recommend for people, and active investing, which is much more enjoyable. Some people enjoy riding on a boat with a captain while others enjoy navigating the winds themselves. The author is a permenant bull on the market, which causes you to wonder about his advice. But at the end of the day, being safe, and investing over time seems to always win the day. So young ministers, start young, and be consistent. So here is some advice young preachers, if you are in your 20's, start a Roth IRA, invest in the S&P 500 fund or ETF.

Well researched and supported by 200+ years of data, Professor Siegel's book makes a compelling case that stocks historically have provided far higher returns with (this is surprising) less risk that other asset classes for the patient investor with the right time horizon. I, for one, have never understood the conventional wisdom that someone like me, 10+ years from retirement should have 45% of my nest egg in bonds, which have their own risks as rates rise. I've read pretty much every investing book there is, and this is in the top 6 along with A Random Walk Down Wall Street (start with this gem), Unconventional Success (Yale Endowment superstar David Swenson's primer for the rest of us), Robert Shiller's Irrational Exuberance, The Intelligent Investor (still interesting after all these decades but not as readable as the others), and Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Letters to Shareholders 1965-present. Becky Bond served as a senior advisor on the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign and was an architect of the campaign’s national, volunteer-driven grassroots campaign. I give this book 5 stars not because it's great literature, although it's plenty fun to read. It's actually indispensable, because it spells out in detail the parameters of effective organizing - namely, getting large masses of people to work together in a coordinated manner to achieve social justice. It's difficult, but not mysterious. No PhD necessary. But sustained application and personal sacrifice will be unavoidable.You'll get through it quickly, but keep it on the shelf. It'll be handy during the next four years.

This is a super-insightful, practical, straightforward and inspiring playbook from the architects of the Bernie Sanders distributed organizing campaign (distributed = millions of volunteers coordinating via technology to make contact and engage voters and propel Sanders close to victory in the 2016 primaries, defying all expectations). It's a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the nuts and bolts of how to leverage volunteers and technology to make change happen -- whether it's influencing elected officials and community leaders, getting a political candidate elected, fundraising for your local non-profit, or starting a social media campaign to educate or engage people on a timely issue. This book does an incredible job of walking you through how to leverage, manage, and mobilize scores of volunteers, how to use technology effectively and on a shoe-string budget, things to do as a campaign / volunteer manager (e.g. trust and empower your volunteers) and things to avoid (e.g. being afraid to fire people who like to hear themselves talk but don't actually do the work), and, in short, how to engage, unite, educate, empower and organize a group of people to create the change you want to see in the world. Fantastic source of information. Also very scientific. Typographic errors are a huge detriment to what could be a serious textbook.

I learned a lot from this book. It's short, but well written.The transcription seems to have not been QC'd at all. It's got words misspelled, spaces in-between words, and the font size changes +2 in the middle only to revert back a few pages later. Still, the material is useful.All in all I'd say it's overpriced. It's short (It didn't show up as anywhere near 45 pages on my Android phone) and the information is available in a more ledgible fasion online.

The content could be extremely useful, however, the formatting is some of the worst I have seen on Amazon. I feel like its not worth the price, because of the formatting and errors.

I don't leave many reviews but I had to for this book since I felt that I got so much out of it, I might as well tell other people about it. In short, it's a stellar and dense read about what motivates people and our brains, and how we can short circuit that and take advantage of it to our self-discipline. It's important to understand what you are battling in procrastination, perfectionism, distractions, and lack of motivation, and that's all addressed here. Honorable mention on the characterization of motivation as a temporary state of mind, where discipline is more automatic. Then more about habit formation and longer lasting behavior modification. Fascinating section on dopamine control, as well as application of the 40% rule that the military has become famous for.Far more than you'd expect but still very accessible and applicable. Overall, just fantastic.

I find that many of the books on so-called self discipline are purely motivational. "self discipline you just get by sitting in a room and doing." Yes, maybe on some level, but that's not helpful. Like, how do you get to that point?This author gives real tips and tactics to get to that point where you can sit, as he says, with wet socks and never have a problem with it. It is also about building the tolerance for discomfort and understanding how your environment and relationships have a huge impact somewhere on your mindset. I particularly liked the four questions posed in one of the later chapters to ask yourself: one of them was "So am I a disciplined person or not" when you are looking at a temptation right in the face. If you leave yourself with no wiggle room and only room for a yes or no answer, then it can be a powerful reminder and helpful for self-awareness.I read a LOT of books and this is one of the best of the year for me. I really, REALLY recommend this book if you have self-discipline issues. It explains better ways to deal with urges, procrastination, and how to get working on things you want to do. For the price, it's a complete steal.

This book was absolutely amazing; I purchased the audio version and was able to listen to it everyday during my work commute. I especially loved how the book touches on specific areas to help develop discipline and after each chapter the author reviews the main take-aways. The tips are very realistic and worth trying out. I have improved my self-discipline so much since reading this book. Even when I feel like putting off things like, exercising, I do not put it off anymore. I get right to it after the messages from this book re-play in my head. The information is great and it sticks!

I'm an 80 year old retired senior executive that, during my career, have read dozens of self help books,yet I found many helpful new ideas that I can apply as I continue my quest to continuously improve the way I live. Highly recommend this book.

One of the best non-fiction books I have read in terms of clarity and brevity. It is not a fun read like one would find with authors like Malcolm Gladwell but if the point is to gain knowledge in order to become self-disciplined then Peter Hollins is the guy I want writing about it (No - I don't know him). While Hollins understands the science behind self-discipline he does not write in that language. The writing is simple and clear. I have read a lot of the studies Hollins cites in this book. I understand them better when he summarizes them and puts them together with other studies to create a cogent, holistic understanding of self-discipline. Hollins is perhaps the most gifted writer I have found in terms of simplifying a subject to a readily understandable level and making it useful yet brief.

I really like this book. This will be a reference guide for the foreseeable future; you know, until I can get this self-discipline stuff nailed down. I like Peter Hollins' books. I have several. I appreciate his science-based approach to everything. His books are accessible, not over-written; easy to breeze through. With his books I always walk away feeling like I didn't have to expend much effort to get a lot of helpful, ready-to-use, information.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! The beginning was a little slow to interest me but further in it gave very valuable and interesting advice on improving one's self. I will definitely read this again and highlight paragraphs that interest me and give great insight
